CHAPTER 3 — The Woman Who Arrived With a Smile

The knock came at noon.

Not violent this time.

Polite.

Two soft taps.

Emily opened the door to a woman in a beige coat holding a clipboard and a practiced smile.

“Ms. Vance?” she said warmly. “I’m Lydia Carr from Family Services Compliance.”

Behind her stood a man in a suit.

And behind him… a second police officer.

Emily didn’t move.

“We’re here to conduct a routine reassessment of Clara’s placement,” Lydia said.

Clara, behind Emily, made a small sound.

A flinch.

Emily felt it immediately.

Recognition fear.

The kind children don’t fake.

“That’s not happening,” Emily said.

Lydia’s smile didn’t change.

“I’m afraid it is. There has been a legal challenge filed. We are required by law to verify custody conditions.”

Emily stepped forward slightly, blocking the hallway.

“From who?”

The man in the suit finally spoke.

“A licensed guardian consortium operating under sealed foster contracts.”

Sarah Collins arrived ten minutes later and went pale the moment she saw Lydia’s ID.

“She’s not here for paperwork,” Sarah whispered to Emily. “She’s here to extract her.”

Emily looked at Clara.

Clara whispered something so small it almost broke her:

“I don’t want to go back to the rooms.”

Emily turned back.

“No,” she said. “She’s not going anywhere.”

Lydia tilted her head.

“That’s not your decision anymore.”

And for the first time, the smile dropped slightly.

Because Clara had spoken again.

Quietly.

But clearly.

“I remember her,” Clara said.

The room went still.

Emily turned.

“Remember who?”

Clara pointed at Lydia.

“She was there before.”

Sarah’s expression changed instantly.

“Before what?”

Clara’s voice trembled.

“Before the mark.”

May you like

Silence swallowed the room.

And Lydia stopped smiling completely.
