Chapter 12 – The Woman Behind the Smile

Chapter 12 – The Woman Behind the Smile
The name stayed in my mind all night.
Eleanor Sterling.
The woman whose tears everyone believed.
The woman everyone described as patient, kind, and devoted.
The woman who stood beside me after Sarah died and promised she would protect my family.
The woman whose medical records were hidden in Daniel's private server.
I sat in my office staring at the documents.
The room was silent.
But inside my head, everything was screaming.
Why did Eleanor have medical records connected to the night Sarah died?
Why did Daniel hide them?
And most importantly...
What happened that night?
David arrived early the next morning.
He looked exhausted.
That told me he had been working all night.
"Richard."
"Tell me everything."
He placed a folder on the table.
"We traced the records."
"And?"
"They belong to Eleanor."
I looked at him.
"Why were they hidden?"
David opened the folder.
"Because the information inside would raise questions."
I read the first page.
Emergency room admission.
Time:
11:47 p.m.
The night Sarah died.
My breathing slowed.
"What happened?"
David turned the page.
"Eleanor claimed she had a panic attack."
"That doesn't explain why Daniel hid the records."
"No."
He looked at me.
"The diagnosis does."
I read the report.
Then stopped.
Possible medication interaction.
My hands tightened.
"What medication?"
David hesitated.
"Sarah's medication."
The room went silent.
For several seconds, I couldn't process the words.
"No."
David didn't speak.
"No."
I repeated.
"Are you saying Eleanor was taking Sarah's medication?"
"We don't know yet."
"But?"
"But the records show Eleanor had access to medication that was prescribed to Sarah."
I stood.
My chair moved backward.
"No."
Because there was one thing I refused to believe.
Sarah's death had been cruel.
Cancer had taken her slowly.
But I had accepted it.
I had built my entire life around accepting it.
The idea that someone had interfered...
That someone had helped take her away from us...
It felt impossible.
Then I remembered Sarah's letter.
I hope I was wrong about one of them.
I sat back down.
"Find out."
David nodded.
"We are."
That afternoon, I met Claire.
Sarah's sister.
For six years, I thought she didn't exist.
Now she was sitting across from me in a quiet coffee shop, holding the memories of the woman I loved.
She looked older than Sarah.
But her eyes...
Her eyes were Sarah's.
"I'm sorry."
She said.
"For not coming sooner."
I looked at her.
"Why didn't you?"
She looked down.
"Because Sarah made me promise."
"Why?"
"Because she knew if Eleanor discovered I was helping her..."
She stopped.
"What?"
"She was afraid Eleanor would destroy the evidence."
I leaned forward.
"What evidence?"
Claire reached into her bag.
She placed a small envelope on the table.
"This."
My heart began beating faster.
"What is it?"
"Sarah gave it to me two weeks before she died."
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a flash drive.
"She told me not to give it to you unless something happened."
I looked at Claire.
"Why didn't she trust me?"
Claire's expression softened.
"She trusted you."
"Then why?"
"Because she knew you loved Eleanor."
That hurt.
Because it was true.
Sarah knew me.
She knew I wanted to believe in people.
She knew I would defend Eleanor.
"Sarah didn't want you to hate someone based only on suspicion."
Claire continued.
"She wanted proof."
I looked at the flash drive.
"What is on it?"
Claire shook her head.
"I don't know."
That night, David and I opened it.
The files appeared slowly.
Documents.
Emails.
Photos.
Audio recordings.
Then one file caught my attention.
FINAL_NOTE_FOR_RICHARD
My hands shook.
I clicked.
Sarah's voice filled the room.
"Richard..."
I froze.
Her voice.
After six years.
A voice I thought I would never hear again.
"If you're hearing this, something happened."
I closed my eyes.
A tear escaped.
"I wanted to tell you everything."
"But I was afraid."
David looked at me.
I couldn't move.
"Daniel has been stealing from the company."
"That was the first thing I discovered."
I listened.
"Then I discovered something worse."
A pause.
"Eleanor wasn't helping me investigate him."
My breath stopped.
"She was helping him hide it."
I looked at David.
Everything became clear.
Sarah continued.
"At first, Eleanor pretended to be my friend."
"She gained my trust."
"She learned about our finances."
"She learned about Maya."
The recording became quieter.
"Then she realized something."
"After I died, Richard would need someone."
My hands clenched.
"Someone to take care of him."
"Someone to raise Maya."
"Someone he would never suspect."
Silence.
Then Sarah said:
"She wanted my place."
I stopped breathing.
"Not just as Richard's wife."
"As Maya's mother."
The recording ended.
Neither David nor I spoke for a long time.
Finally, David whispered:
"Richard..."
I looked at him.
"She planned this before Sarah died."
I nodded.
The next morning, Eleanor called.
I almost didn't answer.
But I did.
"Richard."
Her voice was calm.
"Can we talk?"
"No."
A pause.
"Please."
I almost hung up.
Then I heard something.
Fear.
Real fear.
"Why?"
I asked.
"Because Daniel betrayed me."
I froze.
"What?"
"He was supposed to protect both of us."
Both of us.
The words mattered.
"Eleanor."
"Yes?"
"Who was the real plan?"
Silence.
Then she said:
"You still don't understand."
My grip tightened.
"Explain."
Her voice dropped.
"Daniel wanted your company."
"Yes."
"He wanted your money."
"Yes."
"But I wanted something else."
I waited.
"I wanted the family Sarah had."
The line went silent.
Then she whispered:
"I wanted her life."
The call ended.
For the first time...
I didn't see Eleanor as a cruel stepmother.
I didn't see her as a liar.
I saw something much worse.
Someone who had spent years pretending to be another person.
Someone who didn't want to destroy my family.
Someone who wanted to replace it.
That evening, I returned home.
Maya was waiting.
"Daddy?"
"Yes?"
She looked at me carefully.
"Did you find out about Mommy?"
I nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"Was she scared?"
My throat tightened.
"Yes."
Maya looked down.
"Was it because of me?"
"No."
I knelt beside her.
"Never."
She hugged me.
And for the first time in weeks...
I felt something other than anger.
Hope.
Because Sarah had left us a path.
A way to expose the truth.
But then my phone rang.
David.
I answered.
His voice was urgent.
"Richard."
"What happened?"
"The police found something."
"What?"
A pause.
"Daniel is missing."
My heart dropped.
"And?"
"He took the original company files."
Silence.
Then David said:
"Richard..."
"He didn't run alone."
I looked toward the hallway.
Toward Eleanor's room.
Because suddenly...
I knew.
The woman behind the smile...
May you like
Was still one step ahead.
