Chapter 8 – The Divorce Battle

Chapter 8 – The Divorce Battle
The bruise on Maya's wrist changed everything.
Until that moment, part of me had still been trying to understand.
Trying to explain.
Trying to find some version of reality where Eleanor was simply a damaged person who had made terrible choices.
But there was no explanation anymore.
A child had been afraid to speak because an adult had convinced her that telling the truth would destroy her father.
That was not a mistake.
That was control.
And I was done giving Eleanor opportunities to explain herself.
The next morning, I made one phone call.
"David."
"Yes?"
"Start the divorce."
Silence.
Then:
"Are you certain?"
I looked through the glass doors of the backyard.
Maya was sitting outside with her rabbit, drawing.
For the first time in days, she looked peaceful.
"Yes."
My voice was calm.
"I should have done it sooner."
The papers were filed that afternoon.
And within hours...
Eleanor knew.
She arrived at the house before sunset.
Not angry.
Not shouting.
Calm.
That was what scared me.
People who lose control usually panic.
Eleanor didn't.
She walked through the front door as if nothing had changed.
"Richard."
I stood.
"You shouldn't be here."
Her eyes moved around the room.
"Our home."
I corrected her.
"My home."
A small smile appeared.
"There you are."
"What does that mean?"
"It means I finally see who you really are."
I almost laughed.
"Interesting."
She stepped closer.
"You've been waiting for this."
"No."
"I think you have."
She looked around.
"All these years, you made me feel like I was second."
I stared at her.
"This is about Sarah again?"
Her expression tightened.
"Everything is always about Sarah."
"No."
I shook my head.
"This is about Maya."
And for the first time...
Her expression changed.
Because she knew.
She had lost the argument.
"You think the court will believe you?"
Eleanor asked.
There it was.
The real conversation.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Strategy.
"I have evidence."
She smiled.
"Evidence?"
"Yes."
She laughed softly.
"Richard, do you know how many people think I am a wonderful mother?"
I said nothing.
"Teachers."
"Friends."
"Neighbors."
"Everyone."
She stepped closer.
"You think a few documents change that?"
I looked at her.
"No."
"A pattern does."
Her smile disappeared.
The custody hearing was scheduled quickly.
Too quickly.
Because both sides knew this was no longer a private matter.
The first thing Eleanor did was exactly what David predicted.
She attacked my character.
Her attorney submitted statements claiming:
I traveled too often.
I was emotionally unavailable.
I had become obsessed with accusing Eleanor.
I was using Maya as a weapon.
Reading those words made me sick.
Because they contained pieces of truth.
Yes.
I traveled.
Yes.
I worked too much.
Yes.
I trusted the wrong person.
And Eleanor used my weaknesses against me.
The night before the hearing, I found Maya sitting alone in the living room.
She was holding Sarah's rabbit.
"Daddy?"
"Hey, sweetheart."
She looked worried.
"Is Eleanor coming back?"
I sat beside her.
"I don't know."
Maya looked down.
"Did I ruin everything?"
My heart broke.
"No."
"But everyone is fighting because of me."
I turned toward her.
"Maya."
She looked at me.
"Adults make choices."
I held her hand.
"You didn't make Eleanor treat you badly."
"You didn't make her lie."
"You didn't make anyone hurt you."
She was quiet.
Then:
"Daddy?"
"Yes?"
"Will you still love me if I make mistakes?"
The question was so small.
But it carried everything.
I pulled her into my arms.
"Forever."
The courtroom was packed.
Eleanor arrived wearing a simple dress.
No expensive jewelry.
No designer clothes.
She looked exactly like someone people wanted to protect.
That was intentional.
Her attorney stood.
"My client has dedicated years of her life to caring for this child."
I watched Eleanor lower her eyes.
A performance.
"The allegations against her are based on misunderstandings and emotional reactions."
Then David stood.
"We will prove otherwise."
The first witness was Mrs. Gable.
She explained the drawings.
The calls.
The concerns.
Then the doctor.
He explained the bruises.
Then the security expert.
He explained the disabled cameras.
One by one...
The perfect story began to collapse.
Then Eleanor's attorney called his final witness.
Daniel Cross.
I expected him.
But I wasn't prepared for his opening words.
"I believe Richard Sterling is unstable."
The courtroom became silent.
I stared at him.
After everything...
He still lied.
His attorney asked:
"Why?"
Daniel looked toward the judge.
"Because grief changed him."
I almost couldn't believe it.
But then David stood.
"Mr. Cross."
Daniel looked at him.
"You have worked with Mr. Sterling for twelve years?"
"Yes."
"You handled company finances?"
"Yes."
"You were recently investigated for unauthorized transfers?"
Daniel froze.
"I don't know what you're referring to."
David smiled.
"Then perhaps this will help."
He placed documents before him.
The courtroom went silent.
Daniel's face changed.
Because the divorce battle had just become something else.
A criminal investigation.
Then David played the recording.
The conversation.
Daniel.
Eleanor.
The plan.
The courtroom listened.
No one moved.
When the recording ended...
Eleanor looked at Daniel.
Not angry.
Afraid.
Because she realized something.
Daniel could no longer protect her.
The judge looked serious.
"This court will recess while these matters are reviewed."
Everyone stood.
As Eleanor walked past me, she stopped.
She whispered:
"You think you've won."
I looked at her.
"No."
"I think Maya finally has a chance."
Her eyes hardened.
And then she said something that chilled me.
"Ask Sarah's sister what happened the week before Sarah died."
I froze.
Because Sarah didn't have a sister.
At least...
Not one I knew about.
Eleanor walked away.
Leaving me with another impossible question.
May you like
What else had she been hiding?
