Chapter 9 – The Hidden Accounts

Chapter 9 – The Hidden Accounts
The sentence followed me all the way home.
Ask Sarah's sister what happened the week before Sarah died.
I couldn't stop hearing it.
Because Sarah didn't have a sister.
Not that I knew of.
For six years, I believed I knew everything about my wife.
Her childhood.
Her family.
Her fears.
Her dreams.
But now I was beginning to understand something terrifying.
I knew the Sarah who loved me.
I didn't know every secret she carried.
When I arrived home, Maya was waiting by the window.
The moment she saw my car, she ran outside.
"Daddy!"
I barely had time to open the door before she wrapped her arms around me.
I held her tightly.
For a moment, everything else disappeared.
The court.
The betrayal.
The lies.
Only my daughter existed.
But then she pulled back.
"Is it over?"
I knew what she meant.
"Not yet."
Her smile faded slightly.
"Is Eleanor coming back?"
I knelt.
"I don't know."
She looked down.
"Okay."
That was all she said.
But I heard the fear underneath.
Children don't need long explanations.
They understand uncertainty better than adults think.
That night, David came to my house.
He brought a thick folder.
Not a few documents.
Not a summary.
A mountain of evidence.
"Richard."
He placed it on the table.
"We found the accounts."
I looked at him.
"What accounts?"
"The hidden ones."
My stomach tightened.
"Connected to Daniel?"
"Yes."
"And Eleanor?"
David didn't answer immediately.
That told me enough.
I opened the folder.
The first page showed a list of transactions.
At first glance, they looked ordinary.
Small transfers.
Consulting payments.
Administrative expenses.
Nothing unusual.
But David pointed to the dates.
"Look carefully."
I did.
And then I saw it.
Every transfer happened when I was away.
Every single one.
"How much?"
I asked.
David's expression became serious.
"Almost two million dollars over three years."
I stared at the number.
Two million.
Gone.
"Where did it go?"
He turned the page.
"Multiple shell companies."
"Owned by?"
He hesitated.
"People connected to Eleanor."
I leaned back.
The betrayal was no longer personal.
It was calculated.
"How did they hide it?"
I asked.
David looked through the documents.
"Slow theft."
"What?"
"They didn't take everything at once."
He pointed.
"A large theft gets noticed."
"Small amounts disappear."
"Month after month."
I thought about Eleanor's behavior.
Her patience.
Her planning.
Her obsession with control.
It all made sense.
She wasn't someone who acted impulsively.
She prepared.
"There's more."
David said.
I looked up.
"What?"
He pulled out another document.
"A trust agreement."
My eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
Because I saw Maya's name.
"What is this?"
"A trust Eleanor created."
"For Maya?"
"Technically."
"Explain."
David sighed.
"The trust appears designed to protect Maya."
I frowned.
"Appears?"
"Because the control structure is unusual."
He tapped the page.
"Eleanor would have authority over the assets."
"Until when?"
"Until Maya turns thirty-five."
I stared.
Thirty-five.
Not eighteen.
Not twenty-one.
Thirty-five.
"She wanted control of Maya's inheritance."
David nodded.
"Yes."
I felt sick.
Because suddenly every piece connected.
The rules.
The emotional manipulation.
The reports claiming Maya was unstable.
The financial documents.
The threats.
Eleanor wasn't just trying to become Maya's mother.
She was trying to become the person who controlled Maya's entire future.
Then David placed another document in front of me.
"This one concerns Daniel."
I looked.
A transfer.
A large one.
From Daniel's account.
To Eleanor's private account.
The date was six months after Sarah died.
I froze.
"Six months?"
David nodded.
"Yes."
"After Sarah died?"
"Yes."
I looked at the number.
$500,000.
A payment.
From Daniel.
To Eleanor.
"Why?"
David shook his head.
"We don't know yet."
But I did.
Or at least I had a terrible suspicion.
That night, I searched through Sarah's old belongings again.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I needed answers.
I found another envelope.
Hidden inside an old photo album.
This one wasn't addressed to me.
It was addressed to:
My sister, Claire.
I stopped.
Claire.
Sarah had a sister.
I opened the letter.
The first line made my hands shake.
Claire, if anything happens to me, please watch over Richard and Maya.
I sat down.
Sarah knew something might happen.
The letter continued.
I was wrong about Eleanor.
I stopped breathing.
At first, I believed she wanted to help us.
I believed she cared about Maya.
But then I noticed something.
She never asked how Maya felt.
She only asked what Maya owned.
My eyes burned.
Because Sarah saw it.
She saw what I couldn't.
The final paragraph was underlined.
Richard cannot know yet.
If he knows too soon, they will know I discovered the truth.
They.
Not her.
Them.
I turned the page.
There was a phone number.
And a name.
Claire Whitmore.
I immediately searched my phone.
No contact.
No memory.
Nothing.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?"
A woman's voice.
Older.
Emotional.
"Richard?"
I froze.
"Who is this?"
A pause.
Then:
"I'm Claire."
Sarah's sister.
The woman I never knew existed.
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Why didn't you ever contact me?"
Her voice cracked.
"Because Sarah made me promise."
"Why?"
Silence.
Then she said:
"Because she was afraid Eleanor would find out she was still investigating."
My heart stopped.
"Investigating what?"
Claire whispered:
"The truth about how she died."
I couldn't speak.
The room felt completely silent.
Even the air seemed to disappear.
"Sarah died from cancer."
I said.
Claire didn't answer immediately.
Then:
"Yes."
A pause.
"But cancer wasn't the only thing she was fighting."
My grip tightened around the phone.
"What are you saying?"
Claire's voice became quiet.
"Richard..."
"Sarah believed someone was trying to make sure she never had enough time to expose them."
I looked toward Maya's bedroom.
My daughter.
My wife.
The people I loved most.
Then Claire said the words that changed everything.
"Daniel and Eleanor weren't planning this after Sarah died."
"They were planning it before."
I closed my eyes.
Because the truth I had been searching for...
May you like
Was much darker than I imagined.
