CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH THEY NEVER ASKED

CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH THEY NEVER ASKED

The next morning, Lucas arrived at headquarters furious.

His security badge flashed red.

ACCESS DENIED.

"There must be a mistake," he snapped.

The receptionist lowered her eyes.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Bennett."

"Former Mr. Bennett."

Lucas turned.

Standing behind him was Isabella.

Calm.

Elegant.

Untouchable.

"You planned this."

She nodded once.

"I prepared for it."

"You lied to me."

"No."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"You never asked."

Lucas remembered their first meeting five years earlier.

She had never claimed to be poor.

Never pretended to need saving.

She had simply refused to discuss her family's wealth.

He had filled the silence with his own assumptions.

"I loved you," he whispered.

"You loved the version of me that made you feel powerful."

She paused.

"When I stopped making myself smaller, you called me difficult."

Richard stormed into the lobby.

"This company belongs to my family!"

The chief legal officer calmly handed him a binder.

"It belonged to your family."

He opened it.

Every acquisition.

Every investment.

Every capital injection.

All traced back to Hart Global Investments.

The emergency funding that had rescued the company two years earlier...

The international contracts...

The expansion into Europe...

Every milestone Lucas had proudly claimed had been financed by Isabella's family.
