PART 1: THE ROOM THAT BECAME EVIDENCE

PART 1: THE ROOM THAT BECAME EVIDENCE
The first knock came before anyone was ready to speak again.
Then another.
Then voices outside the door.
“Mrs. Bennett is on her way up!”
Maverick went pale.
“No—no, Amy, please—don’t involve them—”
But I didn’t move.
I stood exactly where I was.
Veil still on my head.
Bouquet still in my hand.
Like a bride frozen at the moment the world decided to show its truth.
Penelope finally broke.
“Amy, it’s not what you think—please—”
I tilted my head slightly.
“It’s exactly what I think,” I said quietly.
My phone buzzed.
My father.
Already done.
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t need to.
Footsteps filled the hallway now.
Multiple.
Fast.
Controlled.
The kind of footsteps that don’t belong to guests anymore.
They belong to consequences.
Maverick rushed toward me.
“I love you,” he said desperately. “This is just a mistake—one night—”
I looked at him.
And something in me finally settled.
Not anger.
Not heartbreak.
Finality.
“A mistake,” I repeated softly.
May you like
Then I nodded.
“Good. So you won’t mind repeating it in front of everyone.”
