PART 3: THE MOMENT POWER SHIFTS

PART 3: THE MOMENT POWER SHIFTS
Maverick stepped forward again.
“Mom, it’s not—this is private—”
But his father spoke for the first time.
“Enough.”
That one word hit harder than anything else.
Because it didn’t come from shock.
It came from authority.
The attorney finally spoke.
“We need to document this immediately.”
Penelope gasped.
“Document? You’re treating this like a legal case?”
Mrs. Bennett turned slowly toward her son.
And asked the question that ended him:
“How long?”
Maverick froze.
“What?”
“How long has this been going on?”
Silence.
The kind that answers everything.
My mother appeared behind me in the doorway now, trembling.
My father stood beside her.
Aunt Rose leaned on her cane like she had seen enough lifetimes to recognize betrayal instantly.
And still—
no one spoke for Maverick.
Because there was nothing left to defend.
Penelope finally broke.
“I didn’t mean for it to happen like this,” she whispered.
Mrs. Bennett looked at her.
Cold.
Measuring.
“And yet,” she said softly, “it did.”
A pause.
Then she turned to me again.
“I am sorry,” she said.
Not for him.
May you like
For me.
That distinction mattered.
