The hallway outside the room shifted.
Footsteps. Multiple. Controlled pace.
Not panic.
Procedure.
A knock came, then two officers in uniform entered with a hospital liaison behind them.
āColonel Hart,ā one of them said.
I nodded once.
āSituation briefed,ā I said. āPatient is my daughter. Potential coercion, confinement, and intimidation by family members present.ā
Margaret straightened immediately.
āThis is outrageous,ā she said. āWe have rightsāā
The officer raised a hand.
āMaāam, weāre here to observe and ensure patient safety. Not debate.ā
That single sentence changed the room dynamics more than anything I had said so far.
Ethan looked at me differently now.
Not angry.
Not dismissive.
Uncertain.
Like he was realizing this wasnāt a family argument anymore.
