Chapter 2 – A Colonel's Promise

The heavy footsteps grew louder.

Ryan looked toward the front door.

Three uniformed military police officers entered the apartment, followed by two Chicago police detectives.

Colonel James Bennett had made one phone call while driving to the apartment.

Not because he expected violence—

But because decades of military service had taught him never to ignore instinct.

The apartment was secured immediately.

No one was allowed to leave.

Ryan tried to smile.

"This is all a misunderstanding."

Colonel Bennett never looked at him.

He knelt beside Emily's bed.

His hands trembled as he gently examined the bruises.

Some were yellow and fading.

Others were dark and fresh.

One hand-shaped bruise rested dangerously close to her pregnant belly.

His voice broke.

"How long?"

Emily stared at the ceiling.

"Five months."

The words struck the room like thunder.

Linda stepped forward.

"She's lying."

Emily closed her eyes.

"No."

"I lied every time Dad asked if I was okay."

"I was trying to protect everyone."

Colonel Bennett quietly reached into his pocket and removed a tiny knitted baby hat he had planned to surprise his daughter with.

He looked at it for a moment before placing it beside her pillow.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

"I should have come sooner."

Emily squeezed his hand.

"You came."

"That's enough."

One detective carefully photographed every injury.

The military police officer noted each visible bruise.

Ryan's confidence slowly disappeared.

For the first time...

No one believed his excuses.
