Chapter 4 – Home Again

Chapter 4 – Home Again
Four months later...
A healthy baby girl entered the world.
Colonel Bennett held his granddaughter with tears in his eyes.
"Your grandmother would have spoiled you," he whispered.
Emily smiled for the first time in what felt like years.
Recovery was not easy.
There were doctor's appointments.
Counseling sessions.
Long nights filled with difficult memories.
But there was also peace.
No shouting.
No fear.
No footsteps outside her bedroom door.
One afternoon, Emily asked her father,
"Do you ever wish you'd come sooner?"
He looked down for a long moment.
"Every day."
"Then why don't you say that more often?"
"Because I don't want guilt to be the story your daughter grows up hearing."
He smiled at the baby sleeping peacefully in her crib.
"I want her to know that when our family finally saw the truth..."
"...we chose to protect each other."
Emily rested her head on his shoulder.
Outside, the winter snow quietly covered the streets.
Inside, the small house was warm with laughter.
The scars on Emily's body would take time to fade.
Some never completely would.
But neither she nor her daughter would ever again mistake fear for love.
