The white envelope trembled in Emily's hand as Richard's fingers tightened around her throat.
"You heard me," he growled. "Give your brother the money."
Emily struggled for air while Brandon stood behind their father, pale but silent. Diane kept repeating the same words she had used throughout Emily's childhood.
"Don't make your father angrier."
The words no longer hurt.
They simply confirmed what Emily had known for years.
She had never truly belonged in this family.
The envelope contained nothing but blank sheets of paper.
Three weeks earlier, Emily had quietly transferred every dollar from the settlement into a protected trust under her attorney's supervision. The real money would pay for surgery, medication, and several months of recovery.
No one in her family knew.
Her phone continued recording every second.
When she raised it between them, Richard released her immediately.
Silence filled the room.
"The police should hear this," Emily whispered.
