Chapter 3: The Truth They Never Wanted

Chapter 3: The Truth They Never Wanted
Brendan slowly stood.
"Emily..."
"You... own the company?"
I met his eyes.
"No."
"I protect it."
"There is a difference."
His face turned white.
"Why didn't you ever tell me?"
I almost laughed.
"Because my grandfather wanted me to know who loved me..."
"...before they knew what I owned."
Diane shook her head violently.
"This isn't possible."
"I built this family."
"You married into it!"
I calmly reached into my purse.
A leather folder slid onto the table.
Inside were copies of the trust documents.
Grandfather's signature.
The board's signatures.
Corporate seals.
Everything legally verified.
Diane's hands trembled so badly she couldn't hold the papers.
Jessica quietly picked up her handbag.
"I... think I should leave."
"No," I said.
"Stay."
"You should hear the rest."
She slowly sat back down.
"The internal investigation didn't begin tonight."
"It began six months ago."
Every executive froze.
"We discovered expense fraud."
"Corporate assets used for personal vacations."
"Kickbacks."
"Unauthorized bonuses."
"My pregnancy simply delayed the final decision."
Brendan lowered his head.
May you like
"You investigated me?"
"I investigated everyone."
