CHAPTER 10 — THE BLOODLINE

CHAPTER 10 — THE BLOODLINE

Martha's finger rested against the trigger.

Julian stared at her.

For the first time in his life, his mother looked like a stranger.

Not the woman who had kissed his forehead every night when he was a child.

Not the woman who had waited outside his school with an umbrella.

Not the woman who had saved every birthday card he had ever given her.

This woman stood beneath the red emergency lights with a gun in her hand and a secret powerful enough to destroy everything Julian believed about his family.

Victor slowly raised his hands.

“Martha.”

“Don't.”

Her voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“You've lied for twenty-seven years.”

Victor swallowed.

“So have you.”

Martha's expression hardened.

“Yes.”

Julian stepped between them.

“Put the gun down.”

Martha looked at him.

“Julian, you don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

“You're not ready.”

“I've heard that my entire life.”

His voice cracked.

“I'm ready now.”

Martha's eyes filled with tears.

For one brief moment, the terrifying woman disappeared.

His mother returned.

Then she looked at Victor.

“Tell him.”

Victor shook his head.

“You tell him.”

Martha lowered the gun slightly.

“Fine.”

She walked toward the table.

Julian followed.

She placed the weapon beside the black folder.

Then she opened the oldest file.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Julian stared at it.

His name was there.

His mother's name.

And beneath Father was a name he had never expected to see.

Not Victor.

Not Richard.

Someone else.

Alexander Laurent.

Julian's breathing stopped.

“Who is Alexander Laurent?”

Martha closed her eyes.

“Your biological father.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Julian stared at the paper.

“No.”

Victor didn't speak.

Martha whispered:

“Victor is not your biological father.”

Julian looked at Victor.

The older man nodded.

“I knew from the beginning.”

Julian's voice became hollow.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you still raised me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Victor looked at Martha.

“Because I loved you.”

Julian laughed bitterly.

“Everybody keeps saying love like it explains everything.”

“It doesn't.”

Victor's eyes filled with tears.

“But it explains why I stayed.”

Julian turned toward Martha.

“Who was Alexander?”

Martha's hands trembled.

“My first husband.”

Julian frowned.

“You were married before Dad?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

Martha hesitated.

“He died.”

“How?”

She looked at Victor.

“Murder.”

Julian went completely still.

“By whom?”

Martha's lips parted.

“Your grandfather.”

Victor interrupted.

“No.”

Martha looked at him.

“You promised.”

“I promised not to lie anymore.”

Victor stepped closer.

“Alexander wasn't killed by your grandfather.”

“Then who killed him?”

Victor answered.

“Richard.”

Julian closed his eyes.

Again.

Richard.

Always Richard.

But this time something didn't fit.

“If Richard killed Alexander, why?”

Victor looked at Martha.

“Because Alexander discovered the bloodline.”

Julian opened his eyes.

“What bloodline?”

Martha sat down.

“The Laurent bloodline.”

She pushed another document toward him.

Julian read the name at the top.

LAURENT FAMILY TRUST — PRIVATE HERITAGE ASSET STRUCTURE

His brow furrowed.

“What does this have to do with me?”

Martha looked directly at him.

“Everything.”

She explained slowly.

The Laurent family had controlled a private financial network for generations.

Not a company.

Not exactly.

A collection of trusts, properties, investments, and private holdings spread across several countries.

The assets were hidden behind layers of corporations.

The true value was almost impossible to calculate.

But there was one condition.

The inheritance could not be claimed by ordinary succession.

It required a direct descendant.

A living heir carrying the Laurent bloodline.

Julian stared at her.

“And I'm that heir.”

“Yes.”

Victor added quietly:

“That's why Richard wanted you dead.”

Julian shook his head.

“Then why didn't anyone simply tell me?”

“Because the inheritance wasn't the only thing attached to your bloodline.”

Martha opened another file.

Inside was an old photograph.

A young Alexander stood beside a woman.

Julian stared at the woman.

She looked exactly like him.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Same expression.

He touched the photograph.

“Who is she?”

“Your grandmother.”

“Alexander's mother?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to her?”

Martha looked away.

“She disappeared.”

Julian stared.

“Everyone disappears in this family.”

No one laughed.

Then Victor said something that changed everything.

“She didn't disappear.”

Julian turned.

“What?”

Victor's voice was low.

“She was murdered.”

“By Richard?”

“No.”

Victor shook his head.

“By Alexander.”

Julian stared at him.

“What?”

“Your biological father killed his own mother.”

Martha closed her eyes.

“He believed she was going to expose him.”

Julian stepped back.

“This makes no sense.”

“It will.”

Victor opened a final folder.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The paper was yellow with age.

Julian recognized the handwriting immediately.

Martha's.

He looked at her.

“You wrote this?”

“Yes.”

“To whom?”

“To you.”

“Why didn't I ever receive it?”

“Because I destroyed it.”

Julian opened the letter.

Only one paragraph remained.

Julian, if you're reading this, then Victor failed to protect you and I failed to protect you. The Laurent inheritance is not a gift. It is a weapon. Whoever controls it controls more than money. Your blood gives you access to information that powerful people have spent decades killing to protect. Never trust anyone who tells you they want to save you. Especially family.

Julian lowered the paper.

“What information?”

Martha looked toward the vault wall.

“Names.”

“Whose names?”

“Everyone.”

Victor stepped closer.

“Politicians. Bankers. Judges. CEOs. Intelligence officers. People who built fortunes by destroying others.”

Julian stared.

“The Laurent Trust kept records.”

“Yes.”

“Blackmail?”

“Evidence.”

Martha corrected him.

“Evidence of crimes.”

Julian understood.

That was why the bloodline mattered.

The Laurent heir didn't simply inherit money.

He inherited access.

And access was power.

Then Julian remembered Bianca.

Her desperation.

Her strange behavior.

The forged documents.

He looked at Martha.

“Was Bianca trying to get the Laurent files?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know I was the heir?”

“Yes.”

“Who told her?”

Martha looked at Victor.

Victor said:

“Richard.”

Julian's fists clenched.

“But Bianca wasn't working alone.”

“No.”

“Who was behind her?”

Martha didn't answer.

Julian stared at her.

“Mom.”

She looked away.

“Who?”

Martha whispered:

“Me.”

Julian froze.

“You?”

“I recruited Bianca.”

The words were almost inaudible.

“I needed someone close to you.”

Julian felt sick.

“You used her.”

“Yes.”

“You told her to seduce me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the false pregnancy.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she was planning to kill me.”

Martha's eyes filled with tears.

“I knew she was being manipulated.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“I tried to stop it.”

“After you started it.”

Martha had no response.

Julian turned away.

His entire life was collapsing in layers.

His father wasn't his biological father.

His mother had recruited his fiancée.

His uncle wanted him dead.

His biological father was a murderer.

And somewhere beneath all of it was an inheritance he had never wanted.

Then the vault speakers crackled.

A new voice emerged.

Male.

Calm.

Almost amused.

“Very touching.”

Everyone froze.

Julian looked at the cameras.

“Who is that?”

The voice laughed.

“You still haven't figured it out.”

Victor reached for the gun.

Martha stopped him.

“Don't.”

The voice continued.

“You've spent the last few hours blaming Richard.”

Julian looked at Victor.

“Who are you?”

A pause.

Then:

“The man who owns the bloodline.”

A monitor switched on.

A live image appeared.

Julian's face went pale.

It showed the hospital.

Martha's hospital room.

The bed was empty.

But beside it stood Richard.

And next to Richard stood Bianca.

Alive.

Julian stepped closer.

Bianca looked directly into the camera.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't afraid.

She smiled.

Then Richard handed her something.

A document.

Bianca signed it.

Julian's heart sank.

The voice returned.

“Your fiancée has made her choice.”

Julian stared.

“What choice?”

“To survive.”

Bianca looked into the camera.

Then she spoke.

“I'm sorry, Julian.”

His face hardened.

“Bianca.”

She couldn't hear him.

But the microphone picked up her next words.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

Richard placed a hand on her shoulder.

Bianca looked down.

“I just wanted to live.”

Julian shook his head.

“You betrayed me.”

Bianca whispered:

“I betrayed everyone.”

The monitor went black.

Martha stood behind Julian.

“Julian…”

He turned.

“Don't.”

She stopped.

He pointed toward the screen.

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

“She knew everything.”

“Yes.”

“And you still brought her into my life.”

Martha's eyes filled with tears.

“I thought I could control the situation.”

“You couldn't.”

“No.”

“You nearly got me killed.”

“I know.”

Julian looked at Victor.

“And you.”

Victor met his eyes.

“I know.”

Julian looked at both of them.

For the first time, he didn't feel like a son.

He felt like a witness.

A witness to a family that had spent decades turning love into leverage.

Then the vault door began to open.

Victor turned sharply.

“That isn't possible.”

Martha looked frightened.

“What?”

Victor grabbed Julian's arm.

“We need to leave.”

“Why?”

“Because this vault only opens from outside if someone has the master Laurent key.”

Julian looked at the silver key on the table.

It began to glow beneath the emergency light.

Then a shadow appeared beyond the doorway.

Someone stepped inside.

A man in a black coat.

Older.

Tall.

His face scarred.

Julian stared.

Victor's expression collapsed.

“No.”

The man smiled.

“Hello, Victor.”

Julian looked between them.

“Who is he?”

Victor whispered:

“Alexander.”

Julian's heart stopped.

His biological father.

The man Martha had said was dead.

The man Victor had said was murdered.

The man whose blood ran through Julian's veins.

Alexander Laurent looked directly at his son.

“You've grown up.”

Julian couldn't speak.

Alexander smiled.

“Unfortunately…”

His eyes moved toward Martha.

“…your mother taught you to trust the wrong people.”

Martha raised the gun.

Alexander didn't flinch.

Instead, he said four words that made Julian's blood run cold.

“Ask her who you are.”

Julian turned toward Martha.

She was crying now.

And for the first time, she looked genuinely terrified.

Because whatever truth remained…

It was worse than everything Julian had already discovered.
