CHAPTER 13 — THE FINAL BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 13 — THE FINAL BETRAYAL
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Julian stared at his reflection in the dark monitor.
For years, he had believed he understood the shape of his family.
Now he realized he had never even known its edges.
Three siblings had become four.
His father was alive.
His grandmother was alive.
His sisters had been hidden.
His mother had lied.
And someone with his blood was sitting inside his Manhattan office.
Victor broke the silence.
“That isn't possible.”
Elise looked at him.
“It is.”
Victor shook his head.
“No. I would have known.”
Julian turned.
“Would you?”
Victor's face tightened.
“What does that mean?”
“You knew I wasn't your biological son.”
Victor didn't answer.
“You knew my father was alive.”
Still nothing.
“You knew about the Laurent Trust.”
Victor looked away.
Julian stepped closer.
“What else don't I know?”
Victor's silence was answer enough.
Alexander moved toward him.
“You knew about the fourth child.”
Victor finally looked up.
“I knew there was a possibility.”
“A possibility?”
Alexander's voice hardened.
“You knew.”
“I had suspicions.”
“Twenty-seven years of suspicions?”
Victor's jaw tightened.
“I was protecting Julian.”
Julian laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.”
Martha whispered:
“Victor…”
He looked at her.
“You don't get to judge me.”
“I never said—”
“You gave our children away.”
Martha recoiled.
“You abandoned me.”
Victor's voice cracked.
“You disappeared with Alexander.”
“Because I was trying to save them!”
“And I was trying to save Julian.”
Julian stepped between them.
“Enough.”
The room fell silent.
He looked at Victor.
“If my brother is in my office, we need to find him.”
Elise shook her head.
“We can't go back yet.”
“Why?”
“Because that's what they want.”
“Who?”
“The people controlling the archive.”
Julian looked at the computers.
“Who controls it?”
Elise hesitated.
“I don't know.”
“You do.”
“I know who built it.”
“Who?”
She looked at Martha.
Martha closed her eyes.
“Your grandfather.”
Julian stared.
“But he's dead.”
“Yes.”
“Then who is running it?”
Martha whispered:
“Someone he trusted.”
The monitor flickered again.
A message appeared.
ONE HOUR.
Then:
ONE CHOICE.
Then:
ONE BETRAYAL.
Julian frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Elise stepped toward the computer.
“There.”
A countdown appeared.
59:58
59:57
Victor cursed.
“Someone has activated the succession protocol.”
“What happens when it reaches zero?”
Elise looked at Julian.
“The archive chooses its final heir.”
Julian stared.
“And the others?”
“They lose access.”
Alexander's expression darkened.
“That's not all.”
Elise nodded.
“The losing heirs become legally invisible to the Trust.”
Julian frowned.
“Meaning?”
“No inheritance.”
“No access.”
“No protection.”
“And anyone who knows the family secrets becomes expendable.”
Julian understood.
“This isn't a succession.”
“No.”
Elise's voice trembled.
“It's a purge.”
The countdown continued.
58:42
Julian looked at Martha.
“What do we do?”
Martha didn't answer.
He grabbed her shoulders.
“Mom.”
She finally looked at him.
“You need to choose.”
“Choose what?”
“Who you trust.”
Julian released her.
“That would be easier if you hadn't spent twenty-seven years lying.”
Martha looked devastated.
“I know.”
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Everyone turned.
The door opened.
Elena walked inside.
Julian rushed toward her.
“Elena!”
She stopped him.
“Don't.”
“Why?”
Her eyes were red.
She had been crying.
“Because I did something.”
Julian froze.
“What?”
Elena looked at Martha.
Then Victor.
Then Alexander.
Finally Julian.
“I betrayed you.”
The room went silent.
Julian's face hardened.
“How?”
Elena swallowed.
“I gave Richard the location of this estate.”
Alexander immediately raised his weapon.
“You!”
Elena flinched.
Julian stepped between them.
“Why?”
“He had Elise.”
Julian looked at his sister.
Elise nodded.
“He threatened to kill me.”
Elena cried.
“I thought I could save her.”
Julian lowered his voice.
“You told him where we were.”
“Yes.”
“And now?”
Elena shook her head.
“He already knew.”
Julian stared.
“What?”
“He knew before I told him.”
The countdown continued.
51:13
Elena reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small drive.
“He gave me this.”
Julian looked at it.
“What is it?”
“The final archive key.”
Alexander stepped closer.
“No.”
“What?”
Alexander recognized it.
“That isn't a key.”
Elise looked at him.
“Then what is it?”
“A kill switch.”
Julian stared.
“For what?”
“The Laurent bloodline.”
Silence.
Elena handed it to Julian.
“He told me if I inserted this into the system, the archive would erase itself.”
Julian looked at the computer.
“Then why would he want that?”
Elise answered.
“Because the archive contains evidence against him.”
Julian looked at the countdown.
“Then he's afraid.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Julian walked toward the computer.
Victor stopped him.
“Wait.”
Julian turned.
“What?”
Victor's expression was strange.
Almost guilty.
“There is something you need to know.”
Julian's patience disappeared.
“Say it.”
Victor took a breath.
“The fourth heir isn't your brother.”
Everyone froze.
Julian stared.
“What?”
Victor continued.
“The man in the video is not Laurent.”
Elise looked confused.
“Then why did the system recognize him?”
“Because someone altered the bloodline database.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“Who?”
Victor looked at Martha.
She began crying.
Julian's heart sank.
“Mom?”
Martha whispered:
“I did.”
Julian felt the room disappear beneath him.
“You changed the system?”
“I had to.”
“Why?”
“To protect the real fourth heir.”
Julian stared.
“Who?”
Martha looked at him.
“You.”
He frowned.
“What?”
“You were the fourth heir.”
Nobody moved.
Martha continued.
“The three children were not born the way you were told.”
Julian shook his head.
“No.”
“You were born first.”
Elena stared.
“But…”
Martha wiped her tears.
“I changed the birth records.”
Julian felt sick.
“You made me believe I was the third.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather wanted to kill the firstborn.”
Julian's face went pale.
“You were protecting me.”
“Yes.”
Elise whispered:
“Then who is the man in the video?”
Martha looked toward the monitor.
Her expression changed.
Fear.
Pure fear.
“I don't know.”
The screen turned on.
The young man appeared again.
This time he wasn't smiling.
“You finally understand.”
Julian stepped toward the screen.
“Who are you?”
The man looked directly at him.
“My name is Adrian.”
“Adrian what?”
“Adrian Laurent.”
Julian stared.
“Are you my brother?”
Adrian smiled.
“No.”
“Then why are you doing this?”
“Because your family killed mine.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“What family?”
Adrian's expression became cold.
“The Laurent family.”
Julian frowned.
“You're not Laurent.”
“No.”
“Then how did you access the archive?”
Adrian leaned toward the camera.
“Because I was the person who designed it.”
Everyone froze.
Victor whispered:
“Your grandfather's architect.”
Adrian nodded.
“I was his protégé.”
Julian understood.
“The fourth profile…”
“Was never a person.”
“It was a security identity.”
“Yes.”
The countdown continued.
37:21
Adrian looked directly at Julian.
“Your grandfather created the system to protect his crimes.”
“What crimes?”
“Kidnappings.”
“Murder.”
“Financial fraud.”
“Political manipulation.”
Julian's fists clenched.
“And my sisters?”
Adrian's expression softened.
“Your sisters were victims.”
“Who took them?”
“Your grandfather.”
“And who helped him?”
Adrian paused.
Then looked toward Martha.
“Your mother.”
Martha closed her eyes.
Julian turned.
“Mom?”
“I didn't know what he intended.”
“You took them away.”
“To save them.”
“You lied to me.”
“To save you.”
“You destroyed my family.”
Martha whispered:
“I know.”
Julian's eyes filled with tears.
For years he had wanted the truth.
Now he had it.
And he hated how much it hurt.
Then the front doors of the estate exploded open.
A gunshot echoed through the house.
Victor pulled Julian down.
“Everyone get down!”
More shots.
Glass shattered.
Elise screamed.
Alexander returned fire.
Martha crawled behind the desk.
Julian looked toward the entrance.
Men in black tactical clothing poured into the hallway.
Richard walked behind them.
Calm.
Unhurried.
He held a pistol.
“Julian.”
Julian stood.
“You.”
Richard smiled.
“You finally found the family.”
Julian looked at him.
“You took my sisters.”
Richard shrugged.
“They were leverage.”
“You tried to kill my mother.”
“She knew too much.”
“You tried to kill me.”
“You were inconvenient.”
Julian stepped forward.
Richard raised his weapon.
“Don't.”
Julian stopped.
Richard looked around.
“Give me the drive.”
“No.”
“Then everyone dies.”
Elena stepped forward.
“Take me instead.”
Richard laughed.
“You still think sacrifice makes you noble.”
Elise grabbed her sister.
“Don't.”
Richard aimed at them.
Julian moved.
“Stop!”
Richard looked at him.
“Good.”
He lowered the weapon.
“You finally understand the rules.”
Julian slowly reached into his pocket.
He pulled out the drive.
Richard smiled.
“Smart.”
Julian held it up.
“But you made one mistake.”
Richard frowned.
“What?”
“You assumed this was the only copy.”
The smile disappeared.
Julian looked toward the computer.
“The archive was already duplicated.”
Adrian's voice came through the speakers.
“Three copies.”
Richard went pale.
“One in Manhattan.”
“One in Europe.”
“And one in the United States Attorney's office.”
Richard stared at the camera.
“You little—”
Adrian interrupted.
“Every file is scheduled for automatic release.”
“When?”
Julian looked at the countdown.
09:42
“When that reaches zero.”
Richard's expression changed.
For the first time, he was afraid.
He raised his gun.
Julian stepped forward.
“Go ahead.”
Richard stared.
“Shoot me.”
Julian's voice was calm.
“But then the archive goes public.”
Richard's hand trembled.
“You wouldn't.”
“I would.”
“You'd destroy your family.”
Julian looked at Martha.
Then his sisters.
Then Alexander.
“We've already lost enough.”
Richard slowly lowered the gun.
“You don't understand.”
“No.”
Julian stepped closer.
“I finally do.”
Richard looked toward the exit.
He tried to run.
Victor tackled him.
The gun slid across the floor.
Police sirens sounded outside.
Julian looked at Victor.
“You called them?”
Victor nodded.
“Before we came.”
Richard stared at the approaching lights.
“No.”
Julian looked at him.
“It's over.”
Richard smiled.
“No.”
He pointed toward Martha.
“Ask her about the last woman.”
Julian froze.
“What woman?”
Richard laughed.
“The one who started all of this.”
Then he was taken away.
The countdown continued.
04:12
Martha began shaking.
Julian turned toward her.
“Who is the last woman?”
Martha couldn't speak.
Elise whispered:
“Mom.”
Martha looked at her daughters.
Then at Julian.
“The woman who founded the Laurent Trust.”
“Who?”
Martha finally answered.
“Your great-grandmother.”
Julian frowned.
“She died.”
Martha shook her head.
“No.”
Julian stared.
“She didn't.”
“She has been alive all these years.”
“Where?”
Martha looked toward the old portrait hanging above the fireplace.
The woman's eyes seemed almost alive.
Martha whispered:
“She's been watching us.”
The countdown reached zero.
Every screen in the estate turned white.
Then one sentence appeared:
THE TRUTH HAS BEEN RELEASED.
Outside, sirens multiplied.
Phones began ringing.
News alerts exploded across the world.
The Laurent archive was no longer secret.
Julian looked at his mother.
“What happens now?”
Martha stared at the portrait.
“Now…”
Her voice trembled.
“…she comes for us.”
And somewhere far away, an old woman picked up a telephone.
She smiled.
“Tell Julian I'm ready.”
May you like
The bloodline had survived.
But the family war had only entered its final chapter.
