CHAPTER 10 — THE EX-HUSBAND'S FALL

CHAPTER 10 — THE EX-HUSBAND'S FALL
The first thing Daniel Bennett saw when the elevator doors opened was the man waiting for him.
His father.
Richard Bennett stood alone in the underground corridor, dressed in the same immaculate black suit he had worn for years.
No guards.
No weapons.
No anger.
Just a smile.
Daniel stopped.
“You knew I was coming.”
Richard's smile widened.
“I knew you would come back.”
Daniel looked behind him.
The elevator doors closed.
“You locked me in.”
“I gave you a choice.”
“You kidnapped a baby.”
“I rescued an asset.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Don't call her that.”
Richard's expression changed.
For the first time, something cold appeared behind his eyes.
“You've become sentimental.”
“She is a child.”
“She is a biological miracle.”
“She is someone's daughter.”
Richard laughed softly.
“You sound like your mother.”
Daniel went still.
“Don't.”
“Why?”
“You know what happened to her.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe she was dead.”
Richard shrugged.
“You were easier to control that way.”
Daniel stared at him.
The truth hurt more than he expected.
All his life, he had believed his father was ruthless because he had to be.
Business.
Politics.
Power.
Survival.
Those were the words Richard had used whenever Daniel questioned him.
But standing there in the underground hospital, Daniel finally understood.
His father hadn't been protecting the family.
He had been protecting himself.
And Daniel had spent years helping him.
He whispered:
“How many?”
Richard frowned.
“What?”
“How many people did you destroy?”
“Be specific.”
“My mother.”
Richard said nothing.
“Alexander Bennett.”
Silence.
“Victor Moretti.”
Nothing.
“Evelyn.”
Richard's face tightened.
“The children.”
Still nothing.
Daniel took a step forward.
“And Anna.”
Richard's expression finally hardened.
“You're becoming dramatic.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“For the first time in my life, I'm being honest.”
Richard laughed.
“You think Anna will forgive you?”
Daniel's eyes lowered.
“No.”
“Then why betray me?”
“Because she doesn't have to forgive me.”
Richard stared.
“What?”
Daniel looked directly at his father.
“She only has to survive.”
Richard's smile disappeared.
“You don't understand what you've done.”
“I understand exactly.”
“You've turned against your family.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“You turned against your family a long time ago.”
Richard's hand moved toward his jacket.
Daniel didn't flinch.
“Do it.”
Richard stopped.
“You think I'm going to shoot my own son?”
“No.”
Daniel's voice was calm.
“You don't shoot people you own.”
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“You've learned more than I expected.”
“I learned from the best.”
Richard smiled.
“Good.”
Then he pressed a button on the wall.
A screen illuminated.
Anna appeared.
She was running through the hospital corridor.
Emma was in her arms.
Another baby was beside her.
Luka was protecting them.
Richard watched Daniel's face.
“There.”
He pointed at the screen.
“That's what your betrayal has accomplished.”
Daniel stared.
“She's alive.”
“For now.”
His father's words hit him like a punch.
“Leave her alone.”
“Then give me what I want.”
“The archive?”
“Yes.”
“I don't know where it is.”
“You do.”
“I don't.”
Richard stepped closer.
“Your wife does.”
Daniel looked away.
“She's not my wife anymore.”
Richard smiled.
“Not legally.”
“She filed.”
“I know.”
Daniel's head snapped up.
“You knew?”
“Of course.”
“You intercepted her divorce papers.”
“Temporarily.”
“You had no right.”
Richard laughed.
“Rights are for people who don't have power.”
Daniel stared at him.
That sentence finally destroyed the last illusion he had about his father.
He had spent years trying to become like Richard.
He had mistaken cruelty for strength.
Control for love.
Fear for respect.
And now he saw exactly where that path ended.
Alone.
Surrounded by lies.
Unable to trust anyone.
Daniel whispered:
“I hate you.”
Richard's expression didn't change.
“I know.”
“And I hope you lose everything.”
Richard smiled.
“You'll regret saying that.”
Daniel looked at the screen again.
Anna was disappearing into a stairwell.
Emma was crying.
Luka was carrying the second baby.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then something unexpected happened.
Richard's phone rang.
He answered.
“Yes?”
A pause.
His face changed.
“What?”
Another pause.
“Impossible.”
Daniel watched carefully.
Richard turned toward him.
“Where did they go?”
He listened.
Then:
“Seal the hospital.”
He hung up.
Daniel smiled.
Richard noticed.
“What?”
“You don't know where she is.”
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“You think that's funny?”
“For the first time?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Yes.”
Richard stepped closer.
“Your wife has escaped with two children, my research facility has been compromised, and the archive is missing.”
He grabbed Daniel by the collar.
“And you think this is funny?”
Daniel didn't resist.
“No.”
He smiled.
“I think you're scared.”
Richard froze.
Then Daniel whispered:
“For the first time, you're scared.”
Richard released him.
“You're finished.”
“Maybe.”
Daniel straightened his shirt.
“But so are you.”
Richard walked away.
“Take him to the holding room.”
Two guards appeared.
Daniel didn't fight.
He allowed them to lead him away.
Because for the first time, he wasn't thinking about escape.
He was thinking about the one thing his father had forgotten.
Daniel knew the Bennett system.
He knew every account.
Every company.
Every secret facility.
Every shell corporation.
Every emergency protocol.
And more importantly…
He knew where Richard kept the evidence.
Three hours earlier, Anna had believed Daniel was still the enemy.
She had every reason to.
He had lied.
He had known about M-17.
He had concealed his father's involvement.
He had allowed Anna to believe she was safe while secretly monitoring her pregnancy.
He had even signed documents that placed Emma under Meridian's surveillance.
There was no excuse.
But there was one thing Anna didn't know.
Daniel had spent the last six months destroying his father's empire from the inside.
He had started after discovering the first file marked M-17-02.
At first, he had been afraid.
Then ashamed.
Then angry.
He had begun copying financial records.
Hospital transfers.
Patient files.
Payments.
Blackmail accounts.
He had built a secret archive.
Not to expose Richard.
Not yet.
He had been waiting for the right moment.
The problem was that Daniel had waited too long.
And now his father had found out.
The holding room was small.
Concrete walls.
One chair.
One camera.
Daniel sat alone.
He looked directly into the camera.
“I know you're watching.”
Nothing.
“Dad.”
Still nothing.
Daniel smiled.
“You always watch.”
A speaker clicked on.
Richard's voice filled the room.
“You have five minutes.”
“For what?”
“To tell me where Anna is.”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“Maybe.”
Richard's voice became colder.
“You don't understand your position.”
Daniel leaned back.
“I understand it perfectly.”
“You're my son.”
“That's never stopped you before.”
Silence.
Daniel continued.
“You're going to lose the hospital.”
Nothing.
“Then the companies.”
Silence.
“Then the accounts.”
Still nothing.
“You think I'm bluffing.”
Richard finally spoke.
“Why would I?”
“Because I already sent the files.”
The room went silent.
Daniel smiled.
Richard's voice came through slowly.
“What files?”
“All of them.”
“What did you do?”
“Three weeks ago, I transferred copies of every Meridian document to an external legal trust.”
Richard said nothing.
“Financial records.”
Daniel counted them off.
“Medical records.”
“Names of subjects.”
“Payments to officials.”
“Hospital acquisition agreements.”
“Blackmail files.”
“Everything.”
“You wouldn't.”
“I already did.”
Richard's voice became dangerous.
“Who has them?”
Daniel smiled.
“People you can't threaten.”
“Who?”
“Federal investigators.”
Silence.
Then a laugh.
Richard laughed.
Deeply.
“You're bluffing.”
“No.”
“You've never had the courage.”
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“You taught me something.”
“What?”
“Never trust the man holding the evidence.”
Richard's voice disappeared.
Daniel waited.
Then the door opened.
A guard entered.
He looked nervous.
“Stand up.”
Daniel remained seated.
“Why?”
“We're moving you.”
“Where?”
“Another facility.”
Daniel smiled.
“Your father doesn't trust you anymore.”
The guard froze.
“What?”
“He told you to move me because he thinks this room is compromised.”
The guard's face changed.
Daniel stood.
“Don't worry.”
He walked toward the door.
“I won't make this difficult.”
The guard relaxed.
That was his mistake.
Daniel struck him once.
The man collapsed.
Daniel caught the keycard before it hit the floor.
He ran.
Upstairs, Richard stood in the emergency command center.
Every monitor showed the same message.
SYSTEM BREACH.
His security chief entered.
“Sir.”
“What?”
“We have a problem.”
“I've had several.”
“The financial network has been frozen.”
Richard turned.
“What?”
“All corporate accounts connected to Bennett Holdings have been flagged.”
“By whom?”
“We don't know.”
“Unfreeze them.”
“We can't.”
Richard slammed his hand onto the desk.
“Who has authority?”
“No one.”
“Then get the bank executives.”
“They aren't answering.”
Richard stared.
“Who is doing this?”
The security chief hesitated.
“Someone with internal access.”
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“Find him.”
“We're trying.”
“Find him.”
The man left.
Richard looked at the monitors.
Then one screen changed.
A message appeared.
ACCOUNT TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Richard stared.
Another message appeared.
BENNETT FAMILY TRUST — CONTROL TRANSFERRED.
Then another.
BOARD VOTING RIGHTS — SUSPENDED.
Richard's face went white.
“No.”
The system continued.
EMERGENCY GOVERNANCE PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.
Then:
NEW INTERIM CONTROLLER: ANNA BENNETT.
Richard stopped breathing.
“Impossible.”
The screen displayed a signature.
Anna's.
But she had never signed it.
Because her father had created the trust long before she knew it existed.
Richard finally understood.
Alexander had prepared everything.
Not for himself.
For his daughter.
And Daniel had just triggered it.
Daniel emerged from a service tunnel behind the hospital.
He expected to find darkness.
Instead, he found someone waiting.
Luka.
Daniel stopped.
“You.”
Luka stared at him.
“You're alive.”
“Disappointed?”
“Not yet.”
Daniel looked around.
“Where's Anna?”
“Safe.”
“Emma?”
“Safe.”
“And Emily?”
“Safe.”
Daniel exhaled.
For the first time in hours, his shoulders relaxed.
Luka noticed.
“You care about them.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to her.”
“Yes.”
“You betrayed her.”
“Yes.”
“You helped your father.”
“Yes.”
Luka stepped closer.
“Why shouldn't I kill you?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Because Anna needs me.”
Luka's jaw tightened.
“That's arrogant.”
“No.”
Daniel pulled a small drive from his pocket.
“It's practical.”
Luka took it.
“What is this?”
“Everything.”
“Everything?”
“Richard's financial network.”
Luka looked at the drive.
“Why give it to me?”
“Because I don't trust myself to hold it.”
Luka studied him.
“You're serious.”
“Yes.”
“What do you want?”
“Nothing.”
“That isn't true.”
Daniel looked toward the hospital.
“I want my daughter alive.”
Luka's expression hardened.
“She's not your daughter anymore.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
That answer surprised him.
Daniel continued.
“Anna doesn't owe me forgiveness.”
“No.”
“She doesn't owe me another chance.”
“No.”
“She doesn't even owe me a conversation.”
Luka lowered the drive.
“Then what do you want?”
Daniel looked at the hospital.
“I want to make sure she never has to see my father's face again.”
Luka was silent.
Then:
“Get in.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Where?”
“Anna is going to need someone who knows how Richard thinks.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
Anna stood in the abandoned Bennett family home.
The house looked exactly as she remembered.
Dusty windows.
Dark corridors.
The old staircase.
Her mother's bedroom at the end of the hall.
She held Emma against her chest.
Emily slept beside her in Luka's arms.
Edward stood behind them.
Evelyn was resting in a safe room downstairs.
Anna stared at the wooden floor.
“My father hid the archive here.”
“Yes,” Edward said.
“Where?”
“Your mother’s room.”
She walked inside.
Memories came rushing back.
Her mother's perfume.
Her father's books.
The old piano.
The locked cabinet.
Anna knelt beside the bed.
She touched the floorboards.
One.
Two.
Three.
Then stopped.
A loose board.
She pulled it up.
Beneath it was a black metal box.
No lock.
No key.
Only a fingerprint scanner.
Anna placed her hand against it.
Nothing happened.
She tried again.
Nothing.
Luka stepped closer.
“Maybe it's not you.”
Anna looked at Emma.
Then placed the baby's tiny hand against the scanner.
The box opened.
Inside was a single envelope.
And a photograph.
Anna picked up the photograph.
Her father.
Her mother.
And a third person.
A man she had never seen.
Standing beside them was Richard Bennett.
On the back of the photograph was a date.
1987.
Anna turned pale.
“What?”
Edward looked at it.
His expression changed.
“That's impossible.”
“Who is the man?”
Edward didn't answer.
Luka looked at him.
“Who?”
Edward whispered:
“Victor Moretti.”
Luka froze.
“My father.”
Anna stared.
Her mother's hand rested on Victor's arm.
And Richard stood beside them, smiling.
The three men looked like old friends.
But the date was wrong.
Victor was supposed to have been a teenager.
Luka took the photograph.
“My father was twenty-one.”
Edward nodded.
“And your mother was twenty.”
Anna stared.
“Then why were they working together?”
Edward looked at the envelope.
“Open it.”
Anna did.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Her father's handwriting.
Anna,
If you've found this, then Richard has finally exposed himself.
Her hands trembled.
There are things I never told you about your marriage.
She read faster.
Daniel did not marry you by accident.
Anna closed her eyes.
Of course.
There it was.
The truth she had feared.
Her marriage had been planned.
But Daniel did not know everything.
She looked at Luka.
He was told to watch you.
He was told to report your medical changes.
He was told to protect the pregnancy.
But he was never told why.
Anna's eyes filled with tears.
Then came the final paragraph.
The day Daniel discovers the truth, he will have to choose between his father and his daughter.
She stopped.
A tear fell onto the paper.
Then she read the final line.
If he chooses Emma, forgive him only if you want to. Never because you feel you must.
Anna lowered the letter.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Then the front door opened.
Daniel walked inside.
Luka immediately stepped between them.
Anna looked at him.
Her ex-husband.
The man who had lied to her.
The man who had stood beside Richard.
The man who had once held Emma for the first time and sworn he would protect her.
Daniel stopped several feet away.
“I brought you something.”
He held out the drive.
Anna didn't move.
“What is it?”
“Everything.”
“Everything?”
“Everything I know about my father.”
She stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because it's yours.”
“It won't change what you did.”
“I know.”
“It won't make me trust you.”
“I know.”
“It won't make you my husband again.”
“I know.”
Daniel's voice broke.
“But it might keep our daughter alive.”
Anna looked at him.
“Our daughter?”
He nodded.
Then he corrected himself.
“Your daughter.”
Anna felt something inside her crack.
Daniel looked down.
“You were right.”
“About what?”
“I stopped being your husband a long time ago.”
He swallowed.
“But I should have become her father much sooner.”
Silence.
Anna took the drive.
Daniel turned to leave.
“Daniel.”
He stopped.
She looked at him.
“Where is Richard?”
Daniel answered without turning around.
“Coming here.”
Anna's blood ran cold.
“How long?”
“Twenty minutes.”
“Why?”
Daniel finally looked back.
“Because he knows where the archive is.”
Anna tightened her arms around Emma.
“And he knows we're here.”
Daniel nodded.
Then he said the words that made everyone in the room go silent.
“He isn't coming for the archive.”
Anna stared.
“What is he coming for?”
Daniel looked at Emma.
“He's coming for you.”
He paused.
“Because you're the only person left who can unlock it.”
A car engine roared outside.
Then another.
Headlights swept across the windows.
Luka moved toward the curtains.
“There are six vehicles.”
Edward looked toward the driveway.
“No.”
Anna whispered:
“What?”
Edward stared at the cars.
“That isn't Richard's security team.”
“Then who is it?”
He looked at the insignia on the first vehicle.
His face drained of color.
“Meridian.”
Anna held Emma tighter.
Daniel stepped toward the window.
“They're here.”
The front doors exploded inward.
Glass shattered.
People rushed into the house.
Luka pushed Anna behind him.
Gunfire erupted.
Daniel grabbed Edward and dragged him behind the staircase.
“Stay down!”
Anna crouched on the floor.
Emma began crying.
Emily woke beside Luka.
Two babies.
Two screams.
Two lives everyone wanted to control.
Anna looked at Daniel.
For the first time, he wasn't standing beside the people who had destroyed her.
He was standing between them and his family.
Daniel met her eyes.
“I told you I'd protect her.”
Anna whispered:
“Then prove it.”
Daniel nodded.
And stepped into the gunfire.
Ten minutes later, the house was silent.
The attackers were gone.
The windows were shattered.
Smoke drifted through the hallway.
Luka returned carrying Emily.
Edward followed.
Anna looked around.
“Daniel?”
No answer.
Her heart stopped.
“Where is he?”
Luka looked away.
Anna ran toward the front door.
Daniel was lying on the driveway.
Blood covered his shirt.
“Daniel!”
She dropped beside him.
His eyes opened slowly.
“Are they safe?”
Anna looked toward the house.
Emma was safe.
Emily was safe.
She nodded.
“Yes.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Good.”
“You're bleeding.”
“I noticed.”
“Stay awake.”
He laughed weakly.
“You sound like you used to.”
Anna pressed her hand against the wound.
“Don't.”
“Don't what?”
“Make this harder.”
His smile disappeared.
“I know.”
She looked at him.
“You're not dying.”
“Probably not.”
“Daniel.”
“I'm serious.”
He closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“I love you.”
Anna froze.
He opened his eyes again.
“But I know that doesn't mean anything anymore.”
She couldn't answer.
He continued.
“I loved you badly.”
A tear slipped down his cheek.
“I thought protecting you meant controlling what you knew.”
He swallowed.
“I was wrong.”
Anna looked at him.
“You were.”
“I know.”
Sirens approached in the distance.
Daniel's breathing became slower.
Anna held his hand.
“Stay.”
His eyes opened.
“Why?”
She looked toward the house.
Then at Emma.
“Because she deserves to know her father tried.”
Daniel stared at her.
For the first time that night, he cried.
Not because he was afraid to die.
Because he finally understood what he had almost lost.
His daughter.
His family.
And the woman he had betrayed.
But before anyone could say another word, a phone began ringing.
It wasn't Anna's.
It wasn't Luka's.
It was Daniel's.
He reached into his pocket.
The screen displayed an unknown number.
He answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
“Daniel Bennett.”
Daniel sat up slightly.
“Who is this?”
“You've just made the biggest mistake of your life.”
Daniel looked at Anna.
“Who are you?”
The voice laughed.
“Ask your mother.”
Daniel froze.
Anna's eyes widened.
The call ended.
A second later, every light in the Bennett house went out.
Then the front television switched on by itself.
A single message appeared.
YOU FOUND THE ARCHIVE.
Then another.
BUT YOU STILL HAVEN'T FOUND THE ORIGINAL.
Anna stared at the screen.
The final message appeared.
ASK YOUR MOTHER WHY SHE MARRIED ALEXANDER.
Silence.
Then, from somewhere inside the house, came the sound of a woman screaming.
Evelyn.
Anna ran toward the basement.
And behind her, Daniel forced himself to stand.
May you like
Because whatever truth was waiting downstairs…
It was about to destroy the last story he had ever believed about his family.
