CHAPTER 11 — THE LAST BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 11 — THE LAST BETRAYAL

The scream came from the basement.

Not a cry of pain.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Anna knew that sound.

It was the sound of someone seeing a ghost.

She ran down the stairs.

“Evelyn!”

Luka was right behind her.

Daniel followed despite the blood soaking through his shirt.

Edward shouted from upstairs.

“Daniel, stay back!”

Daniel ignored him.

The basement door was open.

Evelyn stood in the middle of the room, staring at the old television.

Her face had gone completely white.

On the screen was a photograph.

Alexander Bennett.

Anna's father.

Standing beside Richard.

And beside them—

A young woman.

Anna stopped breathing.

“Who is she?”

Evelyn turned.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Your mother.”

Anna stared at the screen.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“My mother never worked with Richard.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“That is what your father wanted you to believe.”

Anna stepped closer.

The photograph changed.

A document appeared.

Then another.

Then a marriage certificate.

Anna's mother's name was printed at the top.

ELENA MARSHALL.

Beside it was another name.

ALEXANDER BENNETT.

Anna frowned.

“That isn't a secret.”

Evelyn pointed at the bottom.

Anna read the date.

Then froze.

The marriage had taken place in 1986.

But the photograph of Victor, Alexander, and Elena had been taken in 1987.

That still didn't explain anything.

Until another document appeared.

A second marriage certificate.

Same woman.

Different man.

ELENA MARSHALL — RICHARD BENNETT.

Anna stepped backward.

“No.”

Daniel reached the bottom stair.

He saw the screen.

His face changed.

“That's impossible.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your father was married to Anna's mother.”

Daniel shook his head.

“My father never mentioned that.”

“Because the marriage was never made public.”

Anna stared at the document.

“Why?”

Evelyn whispered:

“Because Elena was the person who created M-17.”

The room went silent.

Anna felt the floor move beneath her.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“But my father…”

“Wasn't the scientist.”

Evelyn's voice broke.

“Alexander was the architect.”

Anna looked at Edward.

He looked away.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Twenty-seven years.”

Anna's face hardened.

“And you never told me.”

Edward lowered his head.

“I was ordered not to.”

“By whom?”

He didn't answer.

Anna already knew.

“Richard.”

Edward nodded.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why would my father hide my mother's role?”

Evelyn answered.

“Because Elena discovered what Richard intended to do.”

“What?”

“Use M-17 to manipulate inherited disease.”

Daniel frowned.

“That's not possible.”

“It was.”

Evelyn pointed at the screen.

“Your father didn't want a cure.”

Anna's stomach tightened.

“What did he want?”

Evelyn looked at Emma.

“Control.”

The word hung in the air.

Richard hadn't wanted to cure disease.

He wanted to decide who could inherit health.

Who could inherit illness.

Which families would live.

Which families would die.

And M-17 was the mechanism.

Anna looked down at her daughter.

“Why Emma?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“Because she inherited the final sequence.”

“From me?”

“Yes.”

“But if my mother created it…”

“She gave it to you.”

Anna's eyes widened.

“How?”

Evelyn looked toward Daniel.

“Before she died, Elena transferred the sequence into your father's reproductive program.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“My father?”

“No.”

Evelyn looked at Anna.

“Your mother used Alexander.”

Anna couldn't breathe.

“She knew what he was doing?”

“She knew enough.”

“Then why did she marry him?”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“Because she was trying to destroy him from inside.”

Anna stared at her.

The woman she had spent her childhood believing was gentle, loving, and frightened had apparently been living a double life.

But then Evelyn said something worse.

“She didn't do it alone.”

Anna looked at her.

“Who helped her?”

Evelyn's voice dropped.

“Richard.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“My father helped Elena?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because they loved each other.”

Silence.

Daniel looked like he'd been struck.

“My father loved her?”

Evelyn nodded.

“They were together before she married Alexander.”

Anna closed her eyes.

Everything was becoming tangled.

Too many lies.

Too many names.

Too many versions of the past.

Then she noticed something.

The marriage certificate.

There was a handwritten note at the bottom.

She moved closer.

SUBJECT M-17 TRANSFERRED TO FAMILY LINE B.

Anna's blood ran cold.

“Family Line B.”

She looked at Edward.

“What does that mean?”

Edward's face went pale.

“It means…”

He stopped.

“Say it.”

“It means the Bennett family wasn't the original test family.”

Anna stared.

“Then who was?”

Edward looked at Luka.

The room became silent.

Luka's expression hardened.

“Moretti.”

Edward nodded.

“M-17 began with the Moretti bloodline.”

Luka looked toward the photograph of Victor.

“My father.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Richard have it?”

“Because Richard married Elena.”

Luka's jaw tightened.

“And Elena was connected to my father.”

“Yes.”

Anna suddenly understood.

The babies weren't random.

Emma wasn't random.

The hospital.

The missing records.

The DNA tests.

Everything had been engineered around two families.

Bennett.

Moretti.

Two bloodlines.

One experiment.

And her daughter was the bridge between them.

Then the basement lights came back on.

A voice came through the speakers.

Richard.

“You finally understand.”

Everyone froze.

Richard's face appeared on the television.

Anna stepped toward the screen.

“Where are you?”

“Closer than you think.”

Daniel looked around.

“Dad.”

Richard smiled.

“You always were the slowest.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Why did you marry Elena?”

Richard's smile disappeared.

“Because I loved her.”

Anna's voice trembled.

“Did she love you?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did she marry my father?”

“Because Alexander offered her something I couldn't.”

“What?”

“Protection.”

Anna stared.

“From you?”

Richard laughed.

“No.”

“From the government.”

“From the people who wanted M-17.”

“Then why did you betray her?”

Richard's expression changed.

“I didn't.”

Anna shook her head.

“My mother died.”

“Yes.”

“She died believing you betrayed her.”

“No.”

Richard looked directly at Anna.

“She died believing Alexander betrayed her.”

Anna froze.

“What?”

Richard continued.

“Your father was the one who exposed her.”

Daniel looked shocked.

“Why?”

“Because Alexander discovered Elena had altered M-17.”

“To make it harmless?”

“To make it hereditary.”

Anna stared.

“What?”

Richard leaned closer to the camera.

“Elena changed the formula so that the cure could only activate through a specific maternal line.”

Anna's heart stopped.

“Mine.”

“Yes.”

“And Emma?”

“Your daughter carries the complete sequence.”

Richard smiled.

“She is the first successful combination.”

Anna felt sick.

“So you wanted her.”

“I need her.”

“No.”

Richard's voice hardened.

“Don't misunderstand.”

“I will never give her to you.”

“You already did.”

Anna froze.

“What?”

Richard smiled.

“You gave me access the moment you married Daniel.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

He knew.

The betrayal was bigger than either of them had imagined.

Richard had used Daniel to enter Anna's life.

To monitor her.

To study her.

To ensure she conceived.

Anna looked at Daniel.

“Did you know?”

Daniel shook his head immediately.

“No.”

“You knew about M-17.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my pregnancy was being monitored.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my father had secrets.”

“Yes.”

“But you didn't know why.”

“No.”

Anna stared at him.

She wanted to believe him.

But trust was no longer something she could simply choose.

Richard spoke again.

“Daniel was useful.”

Daniel looked toward the screen.

“Shut up.”

“He watched your medical records.”

“Shut up.”

“He reported every abnormality.”

Daniel's face twisted.

“I said shut up.”

Richard smiled.

“And then he fell in love with you.”

Anna's eyes filled with tears.

Richard continued.

“That was his mistake.”

Daniel looked at Anna.

“I stopped reporting months before Emma was born.”

Richard laughed.

“Too late.”

Daniel whispered:

“You're lying.”

“Am I?”

A file appeared on the screen.

Daniel's name.

Medical reports.

Anna's pregnancy.

Emma's development.

Every detail.

Every appointment.

Every test.

Anna looked at Daniel.

“Is this real?”

Daniel couldn't answer.

The silence was enough.

Anna stepped backward.

“You told me you didn't know.”

“I didn't know all of it.”

“But you knew enough.”

“Yes.”

“You knew they were watching me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I was being tested.”

“Yes.”

“And you stayed.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“I stayed because I thought I could protect you.”

“You should have told me.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Of losing you.”

Anna laughed bitterly.

“And now?”

Daniel looked at Emma.

“Now I have lost you anyway.”

Richard watched them.

Then smiled.

“This is beautiful.”

Anna turned toward the screen.

“You're sick.”

“Perhaps.”

“You destroyed your own son.”

“No.”

Richard's voice became cold.

“Daniel destroyed himself.”

Then the screen went black.

For several seconds nobody moved.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“Anna…”

“Don't.”

He stopped.

She looked at him.

“I need you to leave.”

His face fell.

“Anna—”

“Leave.”

Luka stepped forward.

Daniel looked at him.

“Take care of her.”

Luka nodded.

Daniel turned.

But before he reached the stairs, Anna spoke again.

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

She didn't look at him.

“Thank you for saving Emma.”

He closed his eyes.

It was the kindest thing she had said to him.

And somehow it hurt more than hatred.

An hour later, Daniel sat alone in the car.

He stared at his hands.

Hands that had signed reports.

Hands that had held Anna.

Hands that had held Emma.

Hands that had spent years serving his father.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

A woman's voice spoke.

“Daniel.”

He froze.

“Who is this?”

“You don't know me.”

“Then how do you know my name?”

“I knew your father.”

Daniel's heart began pounding.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Elena.”

He stopped breathing.

His mother's name.

Impossible.

“My mother is dead.”

“I know.”

“Who are you?”

A pause.

Then:

“Your mother.”

Daniel's hands began to shake.

“That's impossible.”

“No.”

“Where are you?”

“I can't tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard is listening.”

Daniel looked around.

“Where is Anna?”

“Safe.”

“And Emma?”

“Safe for now.”

“What do you want?”

“I want you to listen carefully.”

Daniel waited.

Elena's voice became quiet.

“Richard believes M-17 is the cure.”

“He's wrong.”

“I know.”

“What is it?”

“A weapon.”

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“What kind?”

“A weapon that doesn't kill people.”

“Then what?”

“It decides who lives.”

Daniel stared ahead.

“Who controls it?”

“No one.”

“Then why did Richard want it?”

“Because he believes he can.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Where is the original formula?”

Elena whispered:

“With Anna.”

He froze.

“What?”

“She doesn't know she has it.”

“How?”

“Her father encoded it into the only thing Richard could never take from her.”

“What?”

Elena paused.

Then:

“Her memories.”

The call ended.

Daniel sat motionless.

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

Anna as a child.

Standing beside her mother.

On the back was a handwritten sentence:

SHE REMEMBERS EVERYTHING.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Then he realized something.

Anna had forgotten her mother's voice.

Forgotten the last year of her childhood.

Forgotten the night her mother died.

But perhaps she hadn't forgotten.

Perhaps someone had made her forget.

And if those memories returned…

The entire M-17 conspiracy would collapse.

Daniel started the engine.

He knew where he had to go.

Back to Anna.

But when he reached the house, the front door was open.

The lights were on.

No one answered.

“Anna?”

Silence.

“Luka?”

Nothing.

He ran inside.

The living room was empty.

The basement was empty.

The babies were gone.

On the floor lay a single piece of paper.

Daniel picked it up.

Three words were written across it.

SHE REMEMBERS NOW.

His phone rang.

Richard.

Daniel answered.

Richard said only one sentence.

“Your ex-wife has just remembered who killed her mother.”

Daniel's face went pale.

“Who?”

Richard laughed.

Then whispered:

“Ask your father.”

The call ended.

Daniel looked at the paper.

And suddenly understood.

The last betrayal wasn't Richard's.

It wasn't his.

It wasn't Anna's.

It had happened decades earlier.

And the person who had been hiding the truth from all of them…

Was Alexander Bennett.

Anna's dead father.

The man everyone had believed was the victim.

The man who had built the archive.

The man who had supposedly protected his daughter.

Daniel looked toward the empty hallway.

And for the first time, he wondered whether the entire story had been built around one enormous lie.

Because if Alexander had betrayed Elena…

Then everything Anna believed about her childhood was false.

And somewhere in the darkness, someone was waiting for Anna to remember the one thing she had been forced to forget.

The night her mother died.

May you like

The night M-17 began.

And the night Daniel's father became a murderer.
