Chapter 5 — The Secret Charles Kept From Me

Chapter 5 — The Secret Charles Kept From Me
I looked at the account number on my phone again.
Then at my father.
The number belonged to Whitmore Private Holdings.
His company.
His signature was on every document connected to it.
And now someone was demanding that I transfer eighty million dollars into that account.
“Dad,” I whispered, “tell me the truth.”
Charles didn't answer.
That frightened me more than anything else.
“Did you know about this account?”
His jaw tightened.
“Which account?”
“The one they want me to transfer the money into.”
“I've seen the number.”
“When?”
He looked toward the window.
“Months ago.”
My heart sank.
“How many months?”
“Eight.”
I stared at him.
“Eight months?”
“Yes.”
“You've known about this for eight months?”
“I've been investigating it.”
I laughed once.
It wasn't amusement.
It was disbelief.
“You've been investigating Ryan for eight months.”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“It is the only answer I have.”
I stepped closer.
“What did you find?”
Charles looked at me.
His eyes were exhausted.
“I found out that Ryan wasn't the man you thought he was long before you did.”
He led me into the study.
The door closed behind us.
For the first time since my father's men had entered our home, he locked it himself.
Then he walked toward the wall behind his desk.
He pressed a hidden switch.
A section of the bookshelf moved.
I stared.
Behind it was a small room.
Not a closet.
Not a safe.
An entire surveillance room.
Screens covered three walls.
Photographs covered another.
There were files everywhere.
My name was on dozens of them.
So was Ryan's.
I stepped inside.
My breathing became shallow.
There were photographs of Ryan leaving restaurants.
Ryan meeting lawyers.
Ryan entering banks.
Ryan sitting in cars.
Ryan speaking to strangers.
There were photographs of me too.
Leaving work.
Going to the grocery store.
Picking Lily up from school.
Walking with Ryan.
Even photographs of me sleeping in a hospital bed after Lily was born.
I turned toward my father.
“You watched me?”
“No.”
“You had people watching me.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Eight months.”
I stared at him.
“You said you were investigating Ryan.”
“I was.”
“Then why are there hundreds of photographs of me?”
“Because Ryan was watching you.”
I looked back at the screens.
“What did you find?”
Charles took a folder from a shelf.
“Everything began when I noticed irregular transfers from one of Ryan's companies.”
“When?”
“Eight months ago.”
“Why were you looking at his company?”
“Because he requested a loan.”
I frowned.
“He never told me.”
“He didn't want you to know.”
“How much?”
“Twenty million.”
My stomach tightened.
“For what?”
“He said he needed capital for expansion.”
“Did you give it to him?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because his financial statements were fake.”
I stared.
“How fake?”
“Almost everything was fabricated.”
Charles opened another file.
“Revenue was inflated. Assets were overstated. Debts were hidden.”
“So he was already in trouble.”
“He was drowning.”
“Then why did he marry me?”
My father looked at me.
“Because he needed access to your trust.”
I sat down.
Suddenly, memories began rearranging themselves.
Ryan asking about my father's companies.
Ryan asking whether I had signed estate documents.
Ryan becoming angry whenever I refused to discuss my finances.
His obsession with my inheritance.
His questions about Lily's future.
His sudden interest in my father's health.
I had thought they were signs of ambition.
Now they looked like evidence.
“How much did he know?”
“Everything.”
“About the trust?”
“Yes.”
“My account?”
“Yes.”
“Lily?”
Charles hesitated.
“Yes.”
I looked at him.
“What does Lily have to do with it?”
“She's the reason Ryan's plan changed.”
“Why?”
“Because Lily is listed as a secondary beneficiary.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Charles nodded.
“When you die, the trust passes to Lily.”
I stared.
“Ryan couldn't access it directly.”
“So he needed me.”
“Yes.”
“And if I died…”
Charles didn't finish.
He didn't need to.
The money would pass to Lily.
And Ryan would have a path to it through her.
I felt sick.
“He wasn't just trying to control me.”
“No.”
“He was trying to control Lily.”
“Yes.”
I looked at the surveillance photographs again.
One image caught my attention.
Ryan standing outside Lily's school.
Beside him was a woman.
I recognized her immediately.
Claire.
But she wasn't alone.
Another man stood beside her.
“Who is he?”
Charles walked over.
“We don't know.”
“Then why do you have his photograph?”
“Because he's been following Ryan.”
I stared.
“So Ryan is being watched too?”
“Yes.”
“By whom?”
“We never found out.”
I looked at another photograph.
Ryan entering a hotel.
The man was behind him.
Another photograph.
Ryan leaving a bank.
The same man.
Another.
Ryan standing beside his car.
The man was watching from across the street.
“How long?”
“Almost a year.”
“Then why didn't you confront him?”
“Because every time we got close, he disappeared.”
I looked at my father.
“Did you ever meet him?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
“What happened?”
Charles was silent.
I knew that expression.
There was another secret.
“Dad.”
He sighed.
“He came to see me.”
“Who?”
“The man following Ryan.”
“What did he want?”
“To warn me.”
“About what?”
“Ryan.”
I frowned.
“What did he say?”
Charles looked down.
“He said Ryan wasn't the architect of the plan.”
I felt cold.
“Then who was?”
“He didn't know.”
“Did you believe him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew things only someone inside the operation could know.”
“What things?”
Charles opened a file.
Inside were photographs of bank transfers.
“Ryan was receiving money from another source.”
“How much?”
“Over fifteen million dollars.”
“Who sent it?”
“Different companies.”
“Shell companies?”
“Yes.”
“Did you trace them?”
“We did.”
“And?”
“They all led to the same holding structure.”
I leaned closer.
“What holding structure?”
Charles looked at me.
“Yours.”
I froze.
“What?”
“The companies were ultimately connected to your trust.”
I stared at him.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It didn't to me either.”
“So someone was moving my own money through companies connected to my own money.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To make it look like you were laundering it.”
I felt dizzy.
“Ryan was building a case against me.”
Charles nodded.
“But someone else was financing the operation.”
“Who?”
“We never found out.”
I looked at the surveillance wall.
“So why did you keep investigating?”
“Because eight months ago I realized something.”
“What?”
“Ryan knew I was watching him.”
I stared.
“How?”
“He left me a message.”
“What message?”
Charles opened a drawer.
Inside was a single envelope.
My name was written across it.
I opened it.
Inside was one photograph.
Ryan standing beside a grave.
I recognized the cemetery.
My mother's.
But the grave had been empty for twenty years.
On the back of the photograph were six words:
She isn't where you think she is.
I looked at my father.
“Where did he get this?”
“I don't know.”
“You never confronted him?”
“I did.”
“When?”
“Seven months ago.”
“What happened?”
Charles sat down.
“He laughed.”
I couldn't believe it.
“You confronted him?”
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
“He said I should stop digging.”
“Did he threaten you?”
“Not directly.”
“What then?”
“He told me that if I continued investigating him, you would become a widow.”
My blood ran cold.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I didn't want you afraid.”
“I was married to him.”
“I know.”
“You let me sleep beside a man who had threatened to kill me.”
Charles looked devastated.
“I thought I could stop him before he ever touched you.”
I stared at him.
“But he did.”
“Yes.”
His voice broke.
“And I'll regret that for the rest of my life.”
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Then I noticed something on one of the screens.
A live feed.
A street camera.
I stepped closer.
“What is that?”
Charles turned.
“That's the street outside your old house.”
“Why is it still running?”
“Security monitoring.”
A black sedan was parked across the street.
I recognized it.
Ryan's car.
My father immediately reached for the phone.
“Security.”
A man answered.
Charles gave him the license plate.
“Do not approach.”
He hung up.
I stared at the screen.
“Why would Ryan come back?”
Charles didn't answer.
Then the car door opened.
Ryan stepped out.
He looked directly toward the camera.
Then he smiled.
My blood ran cold.
“He knows.”
Charles stared at the screen.
“He knows we're watching.”
Ryan lifted his phone.
A moment later, mine vibrated.
Unknown number.
I opened the message.
Your father finally told you.
I froze.
Another message appeared.
Good.
Then:
Now ask him about the night your mother disappeared.
I looked at Charles.
His face had gone white.
“Dad?”
He didn't respond.
“What happened that night?”
Silence.
“Dad.”
Finally, he whispered:
“I drove her away.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“Your mother didn't leave by herself.”
“Then what did you do?”
“I took her to the train station.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather's men were coming.”
I stared.
“And you let her disappear?”
“I thought she would be safer.”
“Where did she go?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“I swear I'm not.”
I shook my head.
“You said she was dead.”
“I thought she was.”
“You told me she died.”
“Because that's what I believed.”
“Then why did Ryan say she's alive?”
Charles looked at me.
“Because he may have found her.”
My phone vibrated again.
Another photograph.
This one was recent.
A woman standing outside a café.
Dark hair.
Scar beside her eye.
My mother.
Alive.
I stared at the image.
The timestamp was from three days earlier.
My hands began shaking.
“She was here.”
Charles nodded.
“Apparently.”
“Why didn't you find her?”
“Because she didn't want to be found.”
I looked at the photograph.
Then something caught my eye.
The woman wasn't alone.
Someone stood beside her.
A man.
I zoomed in.
My breath stopped.
It was Ryan.
But that wasn't what frightened me.
The woman was holding a child's hand.
A little girl.
Not Lily.
Not Claire's daughter.
Someone else.
My father saw the photograph.
His face changed completely.
“That's impossible.”
“What?”
He stepped closer.
“That child…”
“Who is she?”
He whispered:
“Your sister.”
I stared at him.
“I don't have a sister.”
“You do.”
“Who?”
Charles looked at the screen.
“Her name is Sarah.”
I couldn't breathe.
“My mother had another child?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Twenty-one years ago.”
“Why didn't I know?”
“Because your grandfather took her.”
I stared at my father.
“And my mother spent twenty years looking for her?”
“Yes.”
“Then why is she with Ryan?”
Charles didn't answer.
I looked at the photograph again.
My mother.
Ryan.
The little girl.
Three people I had never expected to see together.
Then my phone vibrated one final time.
A message from Ryan.
You wanted to know my secret life.
I stared at the screen.
The next message appeared.
Now you know only the beginning.
Then:
Your mother isn't trying to destroy your family, Emily.
I swallowed.
Another message.
She's trying to save it from your father.
I looked at Charles.
For the first time in my life, I wondered whether the man who had always been my protector was actually the person I needed protection from.
And then the final message arrived.
Ask Charles who really owns the eighty million dollars.
My father's face went pale.
Because this time, he didn't deny knowing the answer.
He simply whispered:
“Emily…”
I stared at him.
“Who owns it?”
He closed his eyes.
Then said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.
“You do.”
He opened his eyes.
“But not because you're the beneficiary.”
I felt my blood run cold.
“Then why?”
“Because that money was placed under your name…”
He paused.
“…to hide where it really came from.”
And somewhere outside, a car engine roared to life.
May you like
Ryan was gone.
But whoever had been pulling his strings had just made their next move.
