Chapter 8 — The Night Ryan Disappeared

Chapter 8 — The Night Ryan Disappeared

Ryan disappeared at 11:17 that night.

Not ran away.

Not fled the country.

Disappeared.

One minute he was there.

The next, every trace of him seemed to have been erased.

And by sunrise, the police would be asking me a question I could not answer.

Where is your husband?

The truth was terrifying.

I didn't know.

But worse—

I wasn't sure I wanted to find him.

I was still standing in the old Whitmore estate when my father called again.

“Emily, listen carefully.”

“I’m listening.”

“Do not go back home.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Lily is there.”

“I know.”

“Then I’m going to get her.”

“No.”

“Dad—”

“Emily, the photograph you received was taken outside the house.”

“I know.”

“But whoever took it wanted you to believe Lily was in danger.”

“She could be.”

“She isn't.”

“How can you be sure?”

“Because I have six security officers around her.”

I closed my eyes.

“Then who is the girl?”

“I don't know.”

“Someone made her look like Lily.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

My father was silent.

“Dad?”

“Because they're testing something.”

“What?”

“Whether the Whitmore genetic system can be fooled.”

I felt sick.

“The trust.”

“Yes.”

“The vault.”

“Yes.”

“And Lily is the key.”

“I believe so.”

I looked down at the folder.

“What happens if they replace her?”

“They may be able to convince the system that someone else is the rightful heir.”

I whispered:

“They could steal everything.”

My father corrected me.

“Not everything.”

“What then?”

“Control.”

The word hung in the air.

“What does that mean?”

“It means whoever controls the heir controls the trust.”

I looked toward the dark windows of the abandoned estate.

“And Ryan?”

“He knows more than he has told us.”

“Then we find him.”

My father hesitated.

“Emily…”

“What?”

“He called me twenty minutes ago.”

My heart stopped.

“What did he say?”

“He asked for you.”

“Why?”

“He said he wanted to meet.”

“Where?”

“He didn't say.”

“Did he sound afraid?”

“Yes.”

I frowned.

“Of whom?”

My father lowered his voice.

“Of his own people.”

We returned to my house just after midnight.

Police cars filled the street.

Blue lights reflected against the windows.

Detective Marcus Reed stood at the front entrance.

He was tall, tired-looking, and carried the expression of a man who had spent too many years watching families fall apart.

“Emily Whitmore?”

“Yes.”

He showed me his badge.

“Detective Reed.”

My father stepped forward.

“She was expecting me.”

“I understand.”

Reed looked at me.

“We need to speak.”

“About Ryan?”

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where is he?”

“That is what we're trying to determine.”

I looked toward the house.

“Is Lily safe?”

“She is with your father.”

“Thank God.”

Reed nodded.

“We received an emergency call from a neighbor at approximately 10:46 p.m.”

“What happened?”

“Someone reported shouting.”

“From my house?”

“Yes.”

I looked at my father.

“What did they hear?”

“An argument.”

“Between who?”

“Ryan and another man.”

My heart stopped.

“Another man?”

“Yes.”

“Did anyone see him?”

Reed shook his head.

“Not clearly.”

“What about Ryan?”

“We found his car.”

“Where?”

“Three blocks away.”

“Was he inside?”

“No.”

“What was in it?”

Reed's expression changed.

“Blood.”

My chest tightened.

“How much?”

“Enough to concern us.”

“Is it Ryan's?”

“We don't know yet.”

I couldn't breathe.

“Then what are you saying?”

“We're saying your husband may be injured.”

My father stepped closer.

“Or staged his own disappearance.”

Reed looked at him.

“That is also possible.”

Then he turned toward me.

“Did Ryan have enemies?”

I almost laughed.

“Yes.”

“How many?”

I looked at my father.

“Too many to count.”

Inside the house, detectives searched every room.

Nothing seemed disturbed.

Except the kitchen.

A chair was overturned.

A glass was shattered.

And on the floor was a single drop of blood.

I stared at it.

Reed crouched beside it.

“We'll test it.”

“Could it be Ryan's?”

“Possibly.”

I looked around.

“Where did he go?”

Reed stood.

“We found something else.”

He led me upstairs.

The master bedroom was empty.

Ryan's closet had been cleared.

I stopped.

“What happened?”

“He packed a bag.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

I stared at the empty shelves.

He had taken his passport.

Cash.

Several suits.

A laptop.

His backup phone.

But he had left something behind.

A photograph.

It was face down on the bed.

I picked it up.

My blood went cold.

It was a picture of Lily.

But not the Lily I knew.

The photograph showed the mysterious girl from the previous message.

She was standing beside Ryan.

On the back was a date.

Three years ago.

I looked at Reed.

“Where did you find this?”

“On the bed.”

My father came into the room.

He saw the photograph.

His face changed.

“That's impossible.”

I turned toward him.

“You know her.”

“No.”

“Then why do you look terrified?”

He didn't answer.

I held up the photograph.

“Dad.”

Finally, he whispered:

“Because I've seen her before.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“Where?”

He looked at me.

“At your mother's house.”

I couldn't speak.

“My mother?”

He nodded.

“Three years ago, your mother contacted me.”

“You said she disappeared.”

“She did.”

“But you said she came back.”

“She did.”

“And you saw this girl there?”

“Yes.”

“What did Mom call her?”

My father looked away.

“She called her Lily.”

I felt the room tilt.

“She called her Lily?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she was trying to protect her.”

“From whom?”

“From Ryan.”

I stared at the photograph.

“Then why was Ryan with her?”

My father didn't know.

Or he didn't want to tell me.

Reed interrupted.

“There's something else.”

He handed me a small evidence bag.

Inside was a USB drive.

“Found in Ryan's car.”

I looked at it.

“What is it?”

“We don't know.”

My father immediately said:

“Don't open it.”

I turned toward him.

“Why?”

“Because it could be dangerous.”

I almost smiled.

“Everything is dangerous now.”

I took the USB.

We brought it into the study.

A detective connected it to a secure computer.

One folder appeared.

No name.

Just a number.

E-07.

My designation.

I clicked it.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Medical records.

Financial records.

Photographs.

Emails.

Audio recordings.

Then one video.

Recorded two months earlier.

Ryan appeared on screen.

He looked exhausted.

His face was bruised.

He sat in a dark room.

The camera shook.

He looked directly into the lens.

“If you're watching this, I'm probably gone.”

I froze.

Ryan continued.

“I don't know who will find this.”

He paused.

“If it's Emily, I'm sorry.”

My father leaned closer.

Ryan took a breath.

“I know you hate me.”

I whispered:

“You should be alive for me to tell you.”

He continued.

“I deserved some of it.”

My father scoffed.

Ryan looked down.

“But I didn't start this.”

The room became silent.

“I was recruited.”

“By whom?” I whispered.

Ryan continued.

“A man named Victor Hale.”

My father went rigid.

“Who is Victor Hale?” I asked.

He didn't answer.

Ryan looked toward the camera.

“Victor promised me money.”

“Power.”

“A new identity.”

“In exchange for one thing.”

He paused.

“Emily.”

My stomach dropped.

Ryan continued.

“I was supposed to marry her.”

“Gain access to her accounts.”

“Get her DNA.”

“Get Lily's DNA.”

“And then disappear.”

I stared at the screen.

My hands were shaking.

“But something went wrong.”

Ryan's expression changed.

“I fell in love with her.”

I almost stopped breathing.

“No.”

My father looked at me.

Ryan continued.

“I know that sounds impossible.”

“I know what I did.”

“I know what I became.”

“But there was a point when I wanted out.”

He leaned closer.

“Victor didn't allow people to leave.”

Then the video glitched.

The screen went black.

For three seconds, nothing happened.

Then Ryan appeared again.

This time, blood covered his shirt.

Someone was standing behind him.

A man.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

Ryan looked terrified.

“I tried to warn Emily.”

The man behind him stepped closer.

Ryan whispered:

“He found me.”

The screen cut to black.

Nobody spoke.

Then Detective Reed said:

“Who is Victor Hale?”

My father stood.

“An old associate.”

“Associate of who?”

“My father.”

Reed looked at him.

“Your father?”

“Yes.”

“Is Victor Hale still alive?”

My father didn't answer.

I knew immediately.

“Dad.”

He finally spoke.

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

“I don't know.”

Reed stared at him.

“You're telling me a man connected to your family is financing an operation involving your daughter, and you don't know where he is?”

“I've been trying to find him.”

“How long?”

“Twenty years.”

Reed looked at me.

“Does your husband know him?”

“Yes.”

“Does your mother know him?”

My father hesitated.

“Yes.”

My heart sank.

Everyone knew Victor Hale.

Everyone except me.

At 2:03 a.m., my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

“Ryan?”

Silence.

Then breathing.

Heavy.

Painful.

“Ryan?”

A whisper came through.

“Emily.”

I stood.

“Where are you?”

“I don't have much time.”

“Are you hurt?”

“Yes.”

“Who did this?”

“Don't ask.”

“I need to find you.”

“No.”

“Ryan, tell me where you are.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because they're listening.”

I looked at the detectives.

“Who?”

“Victor.”

My father moved closer.

“Where is he?” I demanded.

Ryan whispered:

“Your mother knows.”

“What does she know?”

“Everything.”

I felt anger rising.

“My mother is missing.”

“No.”

“What?”

“She isn't missing.”

“Then where is she?”

Ryan took a shaky breath.

“She came for me.”

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?”

“She found out what Victor was doing.”

“And?”

“She tried to stop him.”

“Did she succeed?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

“She made a deal.”

“What deal?”

Ryan's breathing became weaker.

“She gave him something.”

“What?”

A long silence.

Then:

“Lily.”

I froze.

“What?”

“She gave Victor access to Lily.”

“No.”

“Emily…”

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

“Where is my daughter?”

“Safe.”

“You said—”

“She was never taken.”

I stopped.

“Then what did you mean?”

Ryan whispered:

“Your mother gave Victor access to her genetic records.”

I looked at the file.

The DNA.

The bloodline.

The trust.

Everything suddenly connected.

“Why?”

“Because she needed to find Sarah.”

My heart stopped.

“Sarah is alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“With Victor.”

My father closed his eyes.

Ryan continued:

“Your mother has been trying to get her back for years.”

“And you?”

“I helped her.”

“Then why did you hurt me?”

His voice broke.

“Because Victor was watching.”

I felt tears fill my eyes.

“You could have told me.”

“I tried.”

“You lied.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

“I know.”

A pause.

Then Ryan whispered:

“Emily, listen.”

“What?”

“If I disappear, don't look for me.”

“I will.”

“No.”

“I will find you.”

“Don't.”

“Why?”

“Because if you find me…”

His voice dropped.

“…they'll find you.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

“Ryan?”

Nothing.

“Ryan!”

Dead.

Three minutes later, Detective Reed's phone rang.

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“What?”

“We found your husband.”

My heart stopped.

“Where?”

“An abandoned warehouse near the river.”

I stood immediately.

“Is he alive?”

Reed didn't answer.

“Detective?”

He looked at my father.

“Your husband is gone.”

“What do you mean?”

“He left the building before our officers arrived.”

“How?”

“We don't know.”

“Was there blood?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Enough to indicate a serious injury.”

My knees weakened.

“Then where is he?”

Reed handed me a photograph.

It showed the warehouse floor.

Blood.

A broken phone.

A single wedding ring.

Ryan's ring.

I stared at it.

Then noticed something else.

Written in blood on the concrete were four words:

SHE KNOWS ABOUT LILY.

I looked at my father.

“Who?”

He didn't answer.

“Dad.”

He looked at the words.

Then whispered:

“Your mother.”

By dawn, Ryan had vanished completely.

His passport was gone.

His bank accounts were frozen.

His car had been abandoned.

His phone had been destroyed.

Every security camera along the route from the warehouse had been disabled.

Someone had planned his disappearance.

But I knew one thing.

Ryan hadn't done it alone.

And he hadn't disappeared because he wanted freedom.

He had disappeared because someone was hunting him.

The question was—

who?

At 6:31 a.m., my father received an envelope.

No return address.

Inside was a single photograph.

My mother.

Standing beside Sarah.

Both alive.

Both looking directly into the camera.

On the back was a handwritten message.

He is gone because he chose you.

Below it:

Now you must choose whether you want him found.

My father read the message.

Then he looked at me.

“Emily…”

I took the photograph.

“Don't.”

“What?”

“Don't tell me to stay out of this.”

He said nothing.

I looked at my mother's face.

Then Sarah's.

Then the empty space where Ryan should have been.

“I spent my entire life believing my family protected me.”

I folded the photograph.

“But every secret they've kept has put me in more danger.”

My father lowered his head.

“I know.”

“So I'm done waiting.”

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“Find Victor Hale.”

My father nodded.

“And find my mother.”

He nodded again.

“And find Ryan.”

This time, he hesitated.

“Why?”

I looked at the bloodstained photograph.

“Because I need to know whether he disappeared to save me…”

I paused.

“…or because he betrayed me one last time.”

My father said nothing.

But before sunrise, the security system suddenly sounded.

One notification.

A new file had appeared on the server.

No one had uploaded it.

No one knew how it got there.

The file was titled:

RYAN — FINAL CONFESSION

I opened it.

The screen showed Ryan.

But this time, he wasn't alone.

Behind him stood a woman.

My mother.

She looked directly into the camera.

And the first thing she said was:

“Emily, if you're watching this, your father has lied to you about everything.”

The video paused.

Then continued.

“And Ryan disappeared because I ordered him to.”

I stared at the screen.

My heart stopped.

My mother leaned closer.

“And now that he's gone…”

May you like

She looked over her shoulder.

“…they're coming for you.”
