Chapter 14 — The Price of Betrayal

Chapter 14 — The Price of Betrayal
I ran toward the old maternity ward.
Every step echoed through the empty corridor.
Behind me, Grant shouted my name.
I didn't stop.
The elevator was too slow, so I took the stairs.
Two floors.
Three.
Then the basement.
The doors opened into darkness.
The old maternity ward had been abandoned for years.
The walls were stained.
The lights flickered.
The air smelled of dust and disinfectant.
And somewhere beyond the corridor...
a baby was crying.
"Elise."
I ran toward the sound.
Grant caught up with me.
"Emma, wait."
I pushed his hand away.
"She's here."
"I know."
"Then move."
We reached the old nursery.
The door was open.
Inside stood an incubator.
And inside it...
Elise.
Alive.
Her tiny hands moved beneath the blanket.
A monitor beside her showed a steady heartbeat.
I nearly collapsed.
"My baby."
I rushed forward.
Then Grant grabbed my shoulder.
"Wait."
I turned angrily.
"What?"
He pointed at the monitor.
"That's not hospital equipment."
I looked closer.
The monitor was connected to another machine.
A small red light blinked.
Recording.
Someone had been watching her.
I slowly approached.
Then a voice came from the speakers.
"Beautiful, isn't she?"
I froze.
Julian Cross.
His voice echoed through the room.
"You've spent days searching for her."
I looked around.
"Where are you?"
"Close."
"Show yourself."
A screen on the wall flickered on.
Julian appeared.
He was sitting in a dark room.
Beside him stood a man.
My heart stopped.
I knew him.
The face was older.
The hair was gray.
But the eyes...
I knew those eyes from my mother's photographs.
"Father."
Daniel Whitmore looked directly into the camera.
"Emma."
My knees weakened.
For the first time in my life, I heard my father's voice.
"I'm sorry."
I couldn't speak.
Julian smiled.
"Family reunions are always emotional."
I stepped toward the screen.
"Let him go."
"He isn't my prisoner."
Daniel looked at me.
"He's right."
"Then come here."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because if I leave, they kill Noah."
My blood froze.
"What?"
Julian leaned closer to the camera.
"Your son is with us."
"No."
"He's safe."
"Where?"
"Somewhere you can't reach."
I turned toward Grant.
He was already checking his phone.
"Can you track the signal?"
"No."
Julian laughed.
"Your technology won't help you this time."
I looked at him.
"What do you want?"
"Everything."
"What does that mean?"
"The Whitmore trust."
I stared.
"That's it?"
"No."
"The hospital network."
"That's not yours."
"It will be."
"Anything else?"
Julian smiled.
"Your company."
I understood.
He wasn't after money.
He was after control.
"The entire Project One archive."
"Yes."
"And the twins."
"Especially the twins."
I stepped closer to the screen.
"You won't get them."
Julian's smile disappeared.
"You've misunderstood."
He pressed something.
The monitor beside Elise suddenly began flashing.
Her heartbeat accelerated.
"No!"
I rushed toward her.
Grant stopped me.
"Don't touch the machine."
"She's in distress."
"It's connected to a remote system."
Julian's voice came through the speakers.
"One command."
The monitor returned to normal.
I stared at the screen.
"You could have killed her."
"I could."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because I need you alive."
"For what?"
"To sign."
My grandfather finally entered the room.
"Julian."
Julian looked at him.
"Ah."
"The man who started everything."
My grandfather's face hardened.
"Release the children."
Julian laughed.
"You still think you have power."
"I own this hospital."
"Not anymore."
My grandfather froze.
"What?"
Julian smiled.
"Check your accounts."
My grandfather took out his phone.
His face changed.
"No."
"What happened?"
"Every operating account has been frozen."
Grant stared.
"How?"
Julian answered.
"Your grandfather's board voted."
"Impossible."
"Not anymore."
My grandfather looked at me.
"I lost control."
Julian smiled.
"Exactly."
A second screen came alive.
It showed a live feed from the hospital boardroom.
Men and women sat around the table.
At the center was a woman I recognized.
Vanessa.
She was holding a folder.
My grandfather whispered:
"She betrayed us."
Vanessa looked directly into the camera.
"I did what I had to do."
I stared.
"Why?"
She looked exhausted.
"Because you don't know what they did to my family."
"Your family?"
"My father didn't disappear."
She paused.
"He was imprisoned."
"By whom?"
"Your grandfather."
My grandfather shook his head.
"That's not true."
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"You ordered the detention."
"I was trying to protect the project."
"You destroyed my family."
"I saved thousands of people."
"By sacrificing us."
I looked at Vanessa.
"So this was revenge."
"No."
She shook her head.
"At first."
"Then what?"
"I believed Cross could fix everything."
Grant laughed bitterly.
"He used you."
"I know."
"Then why help him?"
Vanessa looked toward the camera.
"Because he promised to release my father."
I stared.
"Is he alive?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
Vanessa didn't answer.
Julian interrupted.
"Enough."
The screen went black.
My grandfather sat down.
For the first time, he looked old.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just tired.
I looked at him.
"How many people did you betray?"
He didn't answer.
"How many?"
"Too many."
"And my father?"
"Yes."
"My mother?"
"Yes."
"Eleanor?"
"Yes."
"Vanessa's family?"
He closed his eyes.
"Yes."
"And me?"
He looked at me.
"I never betrayed you."
I almost laughed.
"You lied to me my entire life."
"Because I loved you."
"That isn't love."
He looked down.
"I know."
The speakers crackled again.
Julian's voice returned.
"You have ten minutes."
"For what?"
"To choose."
"Choose what?"
"Your son or the hospital."
I froze.
"What?"
"If you transfer control of Beacon Crest to me, Noah walks free."
"And Elise?"
"She stays with you."
My grandfather looked at me.
"Don't do it."
Julian continued.
"Or refuse."
"What happens?"
"You lose both children."
The room went silent.
Grant stepped forward.
"You're bluffing."
Julian smiled.
"Am I?"
He pressed a button.
The screen changed.
Noah appeared.
He was lying inside another incubator.
Alive.
Breathing.
But alone.
I covered my mouth.
"Noah."
Julian watched me.
"You have nine minutes."
Grant suddenly grabbed my hand.
"Listen to me."
"What?"
"This is what he wants."
"He has our children."
"Exactly."
"We can't gamble with them."
"We don't have to."
"What do you mean?"
Grant looked toward the old equipment.
"The system."
"What?"
"Julian is controlling the incubators remotely."
"Yes."
"Then he needs a network."
I looked at the monitor.
"Can you break it?"
"Maybe."
"Maybe?"
"I need access to the hospital's central server."
My grandfather stood.
"I can get you in."
Grant looked at him.
"Can you?"
"I built this network."
"Then let's use it."
My grandfather turned to security.
"Shut down every external connection."
The guards hesitated.
"What if the children lose life support?"
"We'll switch to manual systems."
Grant nodded.
"Do it."
The power began shutting down.
One floor at a time.
Julian's voice returned.
"What are you doing?"
My grandfather smiled faintly.
"For once..."
He looked at me.
"I'm choosing my family."
The hospital went dark.
Emergency lights came on.
The screens disappeared.
The remote system failed.
Grant ran toward the server room.
I followed.
My grandfather stayed behind.
"Where are you going?"
"To finish what I started."
He walked toward the old maternity ward.
"Grandfather!"
He turned.
"Go save your children."
I watched him disappear.
Then I followed Grant.
The server room was locked.
Grant entered an access code.
Denied.
Again.
Denied.
"What's wrong?"
"Someone changed the system."
"Who?"
"Vanessa."
I looked at him.
"Can you bypass it?"
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Three minutes."
"We don't have three minutes."
"Then help me."
I looked at the screen.
Lines of code filled the monitor.
Grant typed rapidly.
A red warning appeared.
REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED.
Julian.
"He found us."
"Keep going."
The warning turned orange.
Then red.
Grant's hands moved faster.
"Come on."
The system suddenly opened.
He smiled.
"Got it."
We accessed the hospital network.
Every connected device appeared.
NICU.
Operating rooms.
Security.
Old maternity ward.
Then two signals appeared.
One for Noah.
One for Elise.
I almost cried.
"They're both here."
"Where?"
Grant pointed.
"Basement level."
"No."
"Both signals."
"Then why did Julian show us those rooms?"
"To make us think they were somewhere else."
I stared at him.
"He wanted us to waste time."
"Exactly."
We ran.
The basement corridor was dark.
A single door stood at the end.
Behind it...
someone was crying.
I opened it.
Noah was there.
Alive.
Safe.
A nurse was holding him.
I rushed forward.
"My baby."
I took him into my arms.
He was warm.
Breathing.
Alive.
I cried.
For the first time in days, I allowed myself to cry.
Grant stood beside me.
"Where is Elise?"
The nurse pointed toward another room.
"She was moved."
"By whom?"
"I don't know."
I looked at Grant.
He checked the signal.
"Still here."
We opened the second room.
Empty.
Only a blanket remained.
And on the wall...
a message.
ONE CHILD SAVED.
ONE CHILD TAKEN.
My heart shattered.
Then the lights came back on.
A phone rang.
Not mine.
Grant's.
He answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a child's cry came through the speaker.
Elise.
I grabbed the phone.
"Elise!"
A man's voice answered.
"Come to the roof."
"Who are you?"
"Your father."
I froze.
Daniel.
"Bring no one."
"No."
"Then I drop her."
The call ended.
Grant looked at me.
"We're going."
"No."
He frowned.
"I'm going alone."
"Absolutely not."
"I can't risk her."
"You can't risk yourself either."
"I can."
Grant stared at me.
"You still don't understand."
"What?"
"If I lose Elise, I lose everything."
"You won't."
He took my hand.
"We won't."
We reached the roof.
The wind was violent.
Rain had started falling.
A helicopter waited near the edge.
Daniel stood beside it.
And in his arms...
Elise.
I stopped.
My daughter looked tiny beneath the blanket.
Alive.
Safe.
I whispered:
"Elise."
Daniel looked at me.
He had tears in his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
"Give her to me."
He stepped forward.
Then stopped.
"First, you need to know."
"What?"
"Your grandfather didn't betray me."
I froze.
"Then who did?"
Daniel looked behind him.
A woman stepped out of the helicopter.
My grandmother.
Dead for fourteen years.
Alive.
I couldn't breathe.
She smiled.
"Hello, Emma."
My entire world stopped.
Behind me, Grant whispered:
"That's impossible."
My grandmother looked at him.
"Nothing about this family is impossible."
She turned toward me.
"Your grandfather believed he was protecting you."
She smiled.
"He never understood that I was protecting the project."
I stared at her.
"You died."
"No."
"You let everyone believe you died."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because it was the only way to disappear."
She looked at Elise.
"And now I've returned for what belongs to me."
I stepped forward.
"No."
She smiled.
"Then you will finally learn the price of betrayal."
Behind her, Daniel suddenly moved.
He handed Elise to me.
My grandmother's expression changed.
"Daniel."
He looked at me.
"Run."
I turned.
Security doors burst open.
Grant grabbed my arm.
"Go!"
We ran.
Behind us, my grandmother shouted.
Daniel stood between her and us.
Then a gunshot echoed across the roof.
I screamed.
"Father!"
Grant dragged me toward the stairwell.
"Keep moving!"
I looked back.
Daniel had fallen.
My grandmother stood over him.
And in that terrible moment, I finally understood.
The price of betrayal wasn't money.
It wasn't the hospital.
It wasn't the company.
It was every person who had ever loved me...
being forced to choose between protecting me and surviving themselves.
I held Elise tighter.
Noah was safe downstairs.
My father was bleeding behind me.
My grandfather was somewhere inside the hospital.
And my grandmother had just returned from the dead.
But I was no longer the frightened woman who had signed divorce papers beside her newborn children.
I had survived betrayal.
I had survived lies.
And now I had both of my children.
I wasn't going to lose them again.
I turned toward Grant.
"Take me to Noah."
"And then?"
I looked back toward the roof.
"Then we end this."
Because my grandmother had made one final mistake.
She had brought the entire family back together.
May you like
And for the first time...
we were no longer fighting each other.
