Chapter 8 — The Nurse Who Heard Everything

Chapter 8 — The Nurse Who Heard Everything

Elise opened her eyes.

She was not crying.

She was not struggling.

She simply stared upward at the unfamiliar ceiling, her tiny chest rising beneath the blanket.

A monitor beside her displayed a steady rhythm.

Someone had moved her from the NICU.

Someone had deliberately kept her alive.

That was the first thing Dr. Evelyn Hart wanted me to understand.

The second was much worse.

"Your daughter wasn't kidnapped to be killed."

Her voice came through the hospital's hidden communication system.

"She was taken because someone needs her alive."

I stood frozen in the security room.

My grandfather was beside me.

Grant was sitting under guard.

Vanessa was crying.

And somewhere beneath us, my daughter was alone.

"Where is she?" I demanded.

No answer.

"Where is my daughter?"

The monitor flickered.

Then Evelyn appeared.

She was standing beside Elise's incubator.

"I knew your mother."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

"I knew your mother before you were born."

My grandfather stepped toward the screen.

"Where are you?"

Evelyn ignored him.

"Emma, if you want your daughter back, you need to listen carefully."

I stared at the screen.

"Tell me what to do."

"You have to stop your grandfather."

My grandfather stiffened.

"Don't listen to her."

Evelyn smiled sadly.

"He's been lying to you since the day you were born."

The screen went black.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then my grandfather turned toward me.

"Emma."

"Don't."

"I can explain."

"You've been saying that all day."

"I was trying to protect you."

"By lying?"

"Yes."

"By hiding my mother's history?"

"Yes."

"By hiding Project Two?"

"Yes."

"By hiding the company?"

He closed his eyes.

"Yes."

I felt something inside me break.

"I don't know what is true anymore."

My grandfather stepped closer.

"The only thing that has always been true is that I love you."

"Then tell me the truth."

"I will."

"Now."

He looked toward the security monitors.

"Not here."

"Why?"

"Because we're being watched."

I stared at the cameras.

"By whom?"

He pointed toward one of the screens.

"The hospital."

I frowned.

"The entire hospital?"

"Someone has compromised the internal system."

He lowered his voice.

"And they've been listening to us."

Nobody noticed the woman standing behind the maintenance door.

Her name was Clara Bennett.

She had worked at Beacon Crest for eleven years.

She was not a doctor.

She wasn't an executive.

She wasn't part of security.

She was a night-shift nurse.

And for the last three hours, she had heard everything.

She had heard the arguments.

The names.

The project numbers.

The contract.

And most importantly...

she had heard the location of Elise.

Clara pressed her hand against her mouth.

She had never intended to become involved.

She had only been looking for the medication room.

Then she had heard Dr. Vale.

She had heard Grant.

She had heard Vanessa.

And now she understood why people had been disappearing from the hospital.

She also knew something none of them knew.

The hospital's hidden room wasn't empty.

Someone else was inside.

Someone who had been there long before Elise arrived.

Clara slowly stepped away from the door.

Then stopped.

A shadow moved at the end of the corridor.

She froze.

The person turned.

Clara recognized him.

Her blood ran cold.

She whispered:

"Mr. Cross."

Julian Cross didn't see her.

He walked toward the hidden elevator.

Clara waited until he disappeared.

Then she ran.

Not toward security.

Not toward the executive floor.

Toward the only person she believed might still help.

Dr. Moore.

She found her in the surgical wing.

"Doctor."

Dr. Moore turned.

"What happened?"

"I heard something."

"About Elise?"

Clara nodded.

"Everything."

Dr. Moore's expression changed.

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

"Then what did you hear?"

Clara looked around.

"Someone is controlling the hospital."

"Who?"

"I heard a name."

"Which one?"

"Julian Cross."

Dr. Moore went pale.

"He's here?"

"I saw him."

"Where?"

"Underground."

Dr. Moore grabbed her arm.

"Show me."

They reached the restricted elevator.

Clara entered a code.

Dr. Moore stared at her.

"How do you know that?"

"I've worked here eleven years."

"That doesn't answer my question."

Clara looked at the elevator panel.

"My father designed the original security system."

Dr. Moore stared.

"Your father?"

"Thomas Bennett."

She watched Dr. Moore's face change.

"You know him?"

"He worked for your grandfather."

Clara nodded.

"He died twenty years ago."

"How?"

"Officially?"

"Yes."

"Heart attack."

Clara shook her head.

"He was murdered."

The elevator doors opened.

They stepped inside.

As they descended, Clara whispered:

"My father told me never to trust the people who built this hospital."

Dr. Moore asked:

"Why?"

"Because he said the hospital wasn't built to treat patients."

She looked at the floor indicator.

"It was built to protect something."

The elevator stopped beneath the research center.

The doors opened.

Clara immediately heard something.

A faint beeping sound.

Dr. Moore followed.

They passed a corridor lined with old storage rooms.

At the end was a reinforced door.

Clara entered another code.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a small room.

Elise was there.

Alive.

Sleeping.

Dr. Moore rushed toward her.

"Oh, thank God."

But Clara didn't move.

She stared at the opposite wall.

There was another door.

It was open.

Inside was a chair.

A desk.

And dozens of old photographs.

Clara walked closer.

One photograph showed Emma's mother.

Another showed Emma's grandmother.

Another showed Julian Cross.

And another showed...

Clara froze.

"Doctor."

Dr. Moore turned.

"What?"

Clara pointed.

A photograph of Emma as a child.

Standing beside her mother.

And beside them...

was Dr. Evelyn Hart.

The photograph was dated twenty-four years earlier.

Dr. Moore stared.

"Evelyn was only a resident then."

Clara shook her head.

"No."

She pointed to another photograph.

This one was dated twenty-nine years earlier.

Evelyn stood beside Emma's mother.

Holding a newborn.

Dr. Moore's voice trembled.

"That's impossible."

Clara whispered:

"She was there from the beginning."

Suddenly, footsteps echoed outside.

Clara turned.

Someone was coming.

She grabbed Elise's incubator.

"Move."

Dr. Moore pushed it toward the exit.

The footsteps became louder.

A voice called from the corridor.

"Doctor Moore."

They froze.

Julian Cross.

He entered the room.

Then stopped.

He stared at the empty incubator.

His expression changed.

"Where is the child?"

Dr. Moore stepped forward.

"You're not taking her."

Julian smiled.

"You misunderstand."

"What?"

"I'm not here for Elise."

Clara's blood ran cold.

"Then why are you here?"

Julian looked at the photographs.

"To retrieve something that belongs to her mother."

Upstairs, I was still searching through security footage.

My grandfather had ordered every camera checked.

Nothing.

No useful image.

No clear face.

No trace of Elise.

Then one camera suddenly came alive.

A maintenance corridor.

I watched.

A nurse pushed an incubator.

My heart stopped.

"That's her."

My grandfather turned.

"Who?"

"Elise."

We watched the footage.

The nurse moved quickly.

Someone followed.

I recognized the nurse.

"Clara."

My grandfather frowned.

"Who?"

"She's one of the night nurses."

He immediately contacted security.

"Find her."

I shook my head.

"Wait."

"Why?"

"Look behind her."

A second figure appeared.

A man.

Tall.

Silver hair.

Julian Cross.

My grandfather's face went pale.

"Where does that corridor lead?"

The security chief checked the map.

"There is no corridor."

"What?"

"It was removed from the official plans twenty years ago."

I stared at the screen.

"Then that's where they took her."

I grabbed my grandfather's arm.

"We're going."

"No."

"Grandfather."

"It's too dangerous."

"My daughter is down there."

"We don't know what's waiting."

"I don't care."

He looked at me.

Then finally nodded.

"Security comes with us."

We moved toward the underground elevator.

Grant stood suddenly.

"I know the way."

I turned.

"How?"

"I've been there."

"When?"

"Before we got married."

"Why?"

"Because Julian took me there."

My grandfather's eyes hardened.

"What did you see?"

Grant looked at me.

"Your mother."

I stopped.

"What?"

"Her research."

"She's dead."

"I know."

"Then what did you see?"

Grant swallowed.

"A video."

"Of what?"

"Her."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

My heart pounded.

"When?"

"Twenty-nine years ago."

He looked at my grandfather.

"She recorded it before she disappeared."

We reached the underground level.

The elevator opened.

The corridor was dark.

Our security team moved ahead.

My grandfather stayed beside me.

Grant followed.

We found the hidden room.

It was empty.

Elise was gone.

Dr. Moore was gone.

Clara was gone.

But something remained.

A recorder.

I picked it up.

A voice played.

My mother's.

My heart shattered.

"Emma..."

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

"If you're hearing this, it means they found you."

My grandfather closed his eyes.

My mother's voice trembled.

"I don't know whether I will survive."

A pause.

"But I need you to know one thing."

The recording crackled.

"You were never supposed to be born."

I felt my knees weaken.

My grandfather reached for me.

I pulled away.

"Let me listen."

The voice continued.

"Your grandmother wanted the first child."

My heart pounded.

"She wanted the child to carry the marker."

A pause.

"But when they discovered I was pregnant with Emma..."

The recording stopped.

I stared at the device.

"No."

Grant looked at me.

"What?"

"The recording."

"What?"

"It's incomplete."

My grandfather looked at the machine.

"Find the rest."

Security searched the room.

Nothing.

Then Clara's voice came through the intercom.

"Emma."

I ran toward the speaker.

"Clara?"

"Listen to me."

"Where is Elise?"

"She's safe."

"Where?"

"I can't tell you."

"Why?"

"Because they're listening."

"Who?"

"Everyone."

I looked at my grandfather.

Clara continued.

"I found the rest of your mother's recording."

"Where?"

"In the old maternity ward."

My heart stopped.

"Is it about my birth?"

"Yes."

"What does it say?"

Clara's voice became quiet.

"It says your mother didn't give birth to you."

I couldn't breathe.

"What?"

"Emma..."

"Tell me."

"You're not the child everyone thinks you are."

The intercom went silent.

Then another voice replaced hers.

Julian Cross.

"Now you understand why your grandfather never wanted you to know."

The speakers clicked off.

My grandfather looked at me.

I stared at him.

"Is it true?"

He said nothing.

"Did my mother give birth to me?"

Silence.

"Grandfather."

He finally answered.

"No."

The word broke something inside me.

"Then who am I?"

He looked toward the old maternity ward.

"I don't know."

I stared at him.

"You're my grandfather."

His eyes filled with tears.

"That's what I have spent twenty-nine years trying to prove."

A door slammed somewhere in the darkness.

Security raised their weapons.

My grandfather pulled me behind him.

Grant whispered:

"Someone's coming."

Footsteps approached.

Slow.

Calm.

Unhurried.

Then a woman appeared at the end of the corridor.

She was holding Elise.

Alive.

Wrapped in a white blanket.

I recognized her immediately.

Dr. Evelyn Hart.

She walked toward us.

"Emma."

I stepped forward.

"Give me my daughter."

She shook her head.

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because you deserve to know the truth first."

"What truth?"

She looked at my grandfather.

Then at Grant.

Then at me.

"The woman you called your mother wasn't your biological mother."

My heart stopped.

She continued:

"And the woman you called your grandmother wasn't your biological grandmother."

Nobody moved.

Evelyn looked down at Elise.

"Your family has spent twenty-nine years hiding the identity of one child."

She looked at me.

"And that child..."

She paused.

"...is you."

I stared at her.

Then at my grandfather.

And finally at the tiny baby in Evelyn's arms.

My daughter.

The one person in the world I knew without doubt belonged to me.

Evelyn stepped closer.

"Your children inherited your blood."

My grandfather whispered:

"No."

Evelyn looked at him.

"Yes."

Then she turned to me.

"And now Julian Cross knows the truth."

"What truth?"

Her voice dropped.

"You're not Emma Whitmore."

The corridor seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

"Then who am I?"

Evelyn looked toward the sealed maternity ward.

"The last surviving child of Project One."

And before I could ask another question, the hospital lights went completely dark.

Again.

This time, a gunshot echoed through the underground corridor.

May you like

Then another.

And Elise began to cry.
