CHAPTER 12 — THE HOSPITAL DOOR

CHAPTER 12 — THE HOSPITAL DOOR

The phone was still in Evelyn's hand when the first alarm sounded.

A sharp electronic tone cut through the quiet recovery room.

Then another.

Then another.

Evelyn looked toward the door.

“What is happening?”

No one answered.

A nurse rushed past the glass wall.

Two security officers followed.

Then the hallway lights changed from white to red.

RESTRICTED ACCESS.

Evelyn's heart began pounding.

She looked toward the NICU.

“Noah.”

Then:

“Elise.”

She tried to get out of bed.

Pain stopped her.

The nurse immediately stepped toward her.

“Please stay in bed.”

“My babies.”

“They're secure.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn stared at her.

The nurse's expression was calm.

Too calm.

“What's happening?”

The nurse hesitated.

“There has been an unauthorized access attempt.”

“Where?”

“The neonatal floor.”

Evelyn's blood went cold.

“Who?”

“We don't know yet.”

Across the corridor, Damian heard the same alarm.

He stood immediately.

“What's going on?”

A security officer blocked his path.

“Sir, you need to return to the waiting area.”

“My children are upstairs.”

“They're safe.”

“I need to see them.”

“You cannot.”

Damian's face hardened.

“I am their father.”

The officer didn't move.

“Not tonight.”

Damian stared at him.

Then he looked toward the elevator.

Two guards stood in front of it.

He understood.

Someone had changed the security protocol.

Someone with more authority than him.

His phone vibrated.

A message from his attorney.

NOW IS THE TIME.

Damian frowned.

Another message arrived.

EVELYN'S CONDITION HAS DETERIORATED.

His eyes narrowed.

Then:

FILE THE EMERGENCY PETITION.

Damian looked toward the recovery room.

For a moment, guilt crossed his face.

Then it disappeared.

He opened the document.

Inside Evelyn's room, Sophia returned.

Her face was pale.

“Evelyn.”

“What?”

“We have a problem.”

“Another one?”

Sophia nodded.

“Damian filed an emergency petition.”

Evelyn stared at her.

“For what?”

“Temporary control over your assets.”

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“Of course.”

“He's also requesting temporary guardianship authority over the twins.”

Evelyn went completely still.

“No.”

“He claims you're medically unable to make financial decisions.”

“He did this now?”

“Yes.”

“While my children are in the NICU?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn looked toward the door.

“Where is he?”

“Outside.”

“Bring him in.”

Sophia hesitated.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

The door opened.

Damian entered.

He looked exhausted.

His tie was loose.

His eyes were red.

For a brief moment, Evelyn saw the man she had married.

Then she remembered the marble floor.

His shoe against her back.

His laughter.

The champagne.

The divorce papers.

She felt nothing.

“Sit.”

Damian sat.

Evelyn looked at him.

“You filed for guardianship.”

“I filed for protection.”

“Of my children?”

“Yes.”

“From me?”

“From your condition.”

Evelyn laughed quietly.

“My condition?”

“You just gave birth to premature twins.”

“And?”

“You're exhausted.”

“I am.”

“You're emotionally compromised.”

“Because I just gave birth?”

“And because you're under enormous stress.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“Who told you to say that?”

Damian didn't answer.

She smiled.

“Victor?”

“No.”

“Your attorney?”

Silence.

“Both.”

Damian looked away.

Evelyn nodded.

“I thought so.”

He placed a folder on the table.

“I don't want to fight you.”

“You already are.”

“I want temporary authority.”

“To do what?”

“Protect the company.”

“You don't own the company.”

“I am still its CEO.”

“Not for long.”

His jaw tightened.

“Evelyn.”

She interrupted.

“You tried to take everything tonight.”

“I was trying to save the company.”

“No.”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“You were trying to save yourself.”

Damian didn't respond.

She continued:

“You know the company is collapsing.”

“Yes.”

“You know Victor is coming after you.”

“Yes.”

“And you know if you lose control of Cross Capital, you'll lose everything.”

He whispered:

“Yes.”

“So you decided to use my condition.”

“I didn't create your condition.”

“No.”

Evelyn's voice became colder.

“But you created the opportunity.”

Damian opened the folder.

“Sign this.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“What is it?”

“Temporary authority.”

“To you?”

“Yes.”

“Over everything?”

“Only until you're stable.”

She looked at the pages.

Then at him.

“You want control over my accounts.”

“Yes.”

“My trust.”

“Yes.”

“My company shares.”

“Yes.”

“And the children's inheritance.”

His silence answered.

Evelyn closed the folder.

“No.”

Damian leaned forward.

“You don't understand what's happening.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“You're vulnerable.”

“I know.”

“Victor will destroy everything.”

“He won't.”

“You can't fight him from a hospital bed.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Maybe I don't have to.”

The door opened.

Adrian walked in.

Damian immediately stood.

“You.”

Adrian stopped.

“Hello, Damian.”

“You betrayed me.”

“Yes.”

“You stole my files.”

“Yes.”

“You handed them to her.”

“Yes.”

Damian's face twisted with anger.

“You destroyed everything.”

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“No.”

“I stopped helping you destroy it.”

Damian took a step forward.

Security immediately moved between them.

Adrian didn't move.

“You should be more careful,” he said.

“With what?”

“With the things you say.”

Damian laughed bitterly.

“You think you're untouchable?”

“No.”

Adrian looked at him.

“I think you're finished.”

Damian turned toward Evelyn.

“This is what you want?”

“What?”

“You want to destroy me.”

Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.

“No.”

He seemed surprised.

“I want the truth.”

“And what happens to me?”

“That depends on what the truth says.”

Damian swallowed.

“You'll take everything.”

“No.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I'll take back what was mine.”

Another alarm sounded.

This one was different.

The nurses rushed toward the NICU.

Evelyn's expression changed.

“What now?”

Adrian looked toward the corridor.

Security officers began closing doors.

A physician ran past.

Evelyn's voice rose.

“Someone tell me what is happening!”

A nurse stopped.

“Mrs. Cross, please stay calm.”

“What happened to my children?”

“They're being moved to a protected unit.”

“Why?”

“Someone attempted to access their records.”

Evelyn's face went pale.

“Their medical records?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“We don't know.”

Adrian looked at Damian.

Damian looked back.

For one second, neither man spoke.

Then Adrian whispered:

“Victor.”

The hospital went into lockdown.

Elevators stopped.

Security checkpoints appeared at every floor.

Visitors were removed.

Phones were restricted.

Evelyn watched through the glass as armed security personnel moved through the corridor.

She felt helpless.

That feeling frightened her more than anything.

For years, Damian had mistaken her silence for weakness.

Now Victor was trying to exploit her fear.

And her children were caught between them.

Sophia sat beside her.

“There's something else.”

“What?”

“The emergency petition was filed using your medical records.”

Evelyn frowned.

“Records that were supposed to be private.”

“Yes.”

“Who accessed them?”

Sophia looked at her.

“Someone with administrative privileges.”

Evelyn's stomach tightened.

“Someone inside the hospital.”

The door suddenly opened.

A man in a white coat entered.

He looked official.

“Mrs. Cross?”

“Yes.”

“I've been sent to evaluate you.”

“By whom?”

He checked his tablet.

“The hospital administration.”

“Name?”

“Dr. Martin Hale.”

Evelyn studied him.

Something felt wrong.

“What department?”

“Internal medicine.”

“Which floor?”

He hesitated.

“Third.”

Evelyn looked at Sophia.

Sophia quietly checked her phone.

Then shook her head.

“No doctor by that name is listed.”

The man's expression changed.

Security immediately stepped forward.

He turned toward the door.

Too late.

The door locked.

The guards seized him.

A small device fell from his pocket.

Evelyn stared.

“What is that?”

Adrian picked it up.

“A recording device.”

Sophia's face hardened.

“He wasn't here to evaluate you.”

“No.”

Evelyn looked toward the NICU.

“He was here to record me.”

The fake doctor was taken away.

But the damage was done.

Someone had breached the hospital.

Someone had accessed Evelyn's medical information.

Someone had attempted to manipulate the narrative surrounding her condition.

And Damian's emergency petition was already moving through the system.

Evelyn looked at him.

“You knew.”

Damian shook his head.

“No.”

“You knew someone was coming.”

“I knew Victor was desperate.”

“You didn't warn me.”

“I didn't know.”

“You knew enough.”

Damian lowered his eyes.

She stared at him.

“That's the difference between us.”

“What?”

“I would have warned you.”

He looked up.

“Even now?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I don't want to become you.”

Damian looked devastated.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

“Hello?”

The voice on the other end was calm.

Too calm.

“Your petition has been accepted for emergency review.”

Damian froze.

“What?”

“You have temporary authority pending a medical determination.”

He looked toward Evelyn.

A faint smile appeared.

Evelyn noticed.

“What's wrong?”

Damian ended the call.

“Nothing.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Damian.”

“What?”

“Don't do it.”

“Do what?”

“Pretend you won.”

Damian smiled.

“I have temporary authority.”

Adrian shook his head.

“You don't.”

“What?”

“Read the final paragraph.”

Damian opened the document.

His expression changed.

Adrian continued:

“Your authority only applies if Evelyn is medically incapable of making decisions.”

Damian looked at Evelyn.

“So?”

Adrian smiled.

“So she's about to prove she's capable.”

The door opened.

A physician entered.

“Mrs. Cross.”

Evelyn looked up.

“Yes?”

“We need to discuss your condition.”

“Am I getting worse?”

The doctor hesitated.

“There were complications after delivery.”

Evelyn's heart sank.

“Tell me.”

“You experienced significant blood loss.”

She closed her eyes.

“How serious?”

“You're stable now.”

“Now?”

“Yes.”

“And the twins?”

“They're stable as well.”

Evelyn breathed again.

The doctor continued:

“But you need close monitoring.”

Damian immediately stepped forward.

“You see?”

Evelyn looked at him.

He pointed toward the doctor.

“She isn't stable enough to make financial decisions.”

The doctor frowned.

“I never said that.”

Damian froze.

The doctor continued:

“Her medical condition has no bearing on her legal capacity unless a formal determination is made.”

Sophia smiled.

Adrian laughed quietly.

Damian's face hardened.

“You're saying she's capable?”

“Absolutely.”

The doctor turned toward Evelyn.

“You're exhausted, but you're conscious, oriented, and fully capable of communicating your decisions.”

Damian's temporary authority collapsed before it had even begun.

Evelyn looked at him.

“You heard her.”

Damian stared at the floor.

The hospital door opened again.

This time, three federal investigators entered.

The lead investigator approached Damian.

“Mr. Cross.”

“Yes?”

“We need to speak with you.”

“About what?”

“Cross Capital.”

Damian's face went pale.

“We have documents.”

“What documents?”

“Records connecting you to offshore entities.”

Damian looked at Adrian.

Adrian didn't move.

Then the investigator continued:

“And evidence regarding the attempted manipulation of Mrs. Cross's medical records.”

Damian shook his head.

“I didn't do that.”

“No?”

“No.”

The investigator held up a tablet.

“Then perhaps you'd like to explain why your attorney requested access to her records three hours before the breach.”

Damian couldn't speak.

Evelyn stared at him.

He looked at her.

“I didn't know.”

She believed him.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because Damian had created a machine he no longer controlled.

Hours passed.

The twins remained under observation.

Evelyn refused to sleep.

She watched the NICU through the glass.

Noah's tiny hand moved.

Elise's chest rose and fell.

She pressed her palm against the glass.

“Mommy's here.”

Behind her, Damian stood silently.

“I should have been here.”

Evelyn didn't turn.

“Yes.”

“I missed everything.”

“Yes.”

“I can't change that.”

“No.”

He swallowed.

“But I want to try.”

Evelyn finally looked at him.

“Trying doesn't mean getting your old life back.”

“I know.”

“It means accepting what you did.”

“I will.”

“And accepting that I may never forgive you.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

“And accepting that the children will never be leverage again.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“They won't.”

Evelyn looked back at the twins.

“Then maybe one day you'll understand what being their father actually means.”

At 7:46 a.m., Evelyn's phone vibrated.

One new message.

Unknown number.

She opened it.

There was a photograph.

Her mother.

Standing outside a hospital.

The date was twenty-six years earlier.

Evelyn stared.

Another message appeared.

Your mother didn't die where you were told.

Then:

She gave birth to you here.

Evelyn's heart stopped.

A third message appeared.

And your father was in the room.

She looked toward the hospital doors.

Then toward Damian.

Then at the photograph again.

A final message appeared.

Ask Adrian who paid for the delivery.

Evelyn turned slowly.

Adrian was standing across the room.

He saw her expression.

“What happened?”

She held up the phone.

“Who paid for my birth?”

Adrian's face went completely white.

He looked toward the NICU.

Then toward the locked hospital door.

And whispered:

“Evelyn…”

“What?”

“I think we finally found the reason your mother was afraid of Victor.”

She stepped closer.

“What reason?”

Adrian swallowed.

“Because Victor wasn't protecting Cross Capital.”

He looked at her.

“He was protecting a secret that began before you were born.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“What secret?”

Adrian's voice dropped to a whisper.

“You weren't supposed to inherit the Vance fortune.”

A pause.

May you like

“You were supposed to inherit something much bigger.”
