CHAPTER 6 — CELESTE'S SECRET

CHAPTER 6 — CELESTE'S SECRET
Celeste Monroe had always believed she understood Damian Cross.
She knew how he lied.
She knew how he smiled when he was hiding something.
She knew how he became silent when he was frightened.
She knew which promises meant nothing.
And she knew exactly how much money he was willing to sacrifice to protect himself.
What she had never understood was this:
Damian had never trusted her.
Not once.
The realization came at 2:13 a.m.
Celeste was sitting alone in a hotel suite, staring at the city lights through a wall of glass.
Her attorney had gone home hours earlier.
The television was muted.
Every financial channel was showing the same story.
CROSS CAPITAL COLLAPSES AS VANCE TRUST ASSERTS CONTROL.
Then the screen changed.
A photograph of Evelyn appeared.
Calm.
Pregnant.
Standing outside the courthouse.
Underneath it was a headline:
WHO IS EVELYN CROSS REALLY?
Celeste leaned closer.
The reporter continued:
“Newly uncovered records suggest that Evelyn Vance was the protected beneficiary of a family trust worth significantly more than previously believed.”
Celeste frowned.
That wasn't what frightened her.
The next sentence did.
“Sources familiar with the investigation also indicate that the marriage between Evelyn Vance and Damian Cross may have been connected to a decades-old financial arrangement.”
Celeste's heart stopped.
“Decades-old?”
She whispered the words.
Damian had told her Evelyn was wealthy.
He had told her Evelyn was naive.
He had told her the marriage was convenient.
But he had never said anything about a decades-old arrangement.
Celeste reached for her phone.
She called Damian.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
She tried a third time.
Straight to voicemail.
Celeste stared at the screen.
Then she remembered something.
A sentence Damian had once said after too much whiskey.
“If Evelyn ever finds out why I married her, we're all finished.”
At the time, Celeste had laughed.
Now she wasn't laughing.
At 3:02 a.m., Celeste opened the old email archive.
She had saved thousands of messages over the years.
Not because she was sentimental.
Because she knew Damian.
A man who lied to everyone eventually lied to himself.
She searched for:
Evelyn.
Hundreds of results appeared.
Then:
Vance.
More.
Then:
Orchid.
Her blood ran cold.
There were only seven messages.
All from before her relationship with Damian.
All involving the same mysterious company.
ORCHID HOLDINGS.
She opened the oldest.
The sender was unknown.
The message contained only one sentence.
The marriage must happen before the trust matures.
Celeste stared.
Another message.
Damian has been approved.
Another.
Do not allow Evelyn to discover the original agreement.
Celeste's hand began shaking.
Another.
If Damian fails, replace him.
She stopped breathing.
Replace him?
With whom?
She opened the final email.
There was no text.
Only an attachment.
A photograph.
Evelyn.
Young.
Maybe twenty-three.
Standing beside a woman Celeste recognized immediately.
Eleanor Vale.
Evelyn's mother.
Celeste stared at the photograph.
The date was written underneath.
Eight months before Damian met Evelyn.
Celeste whispered:
“This isn't possible.”
At dawn, she went to see Damian.
He was staying in a temporary apartment under an assumed reservation.
When he opened the door, he looked exhausted.
“You shouldn't be here.”
Celeste walked inside.
“You lied to me.”
Damian closed the door.
“About what?”
“Everything.”
He said nothing.
She held up her phone.
“Orchid Holdings.”
His face changed.
That was all the confirmation she needed.
“You know what it is.”
Damian looked away.
“Where did you get that name?”
“Your emails.”
“You went through my files?”
“I was trying to understand why Evelyn was worth so much to you.”
He looked at her.
“She isn't.”
Celeste laughed.
“Don't lie to me now.”
“I didn't marry her for money.”
“Then why?”
Damian remained silent.
Celeste stepped closer.
“Why did the marriage have to happen before her trust matured?”
He froze.
Celeste's voice cracked.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
Damian sat down.
“Long before I met you.”
Celeste stared at him.
“What is Orchid Holdings?”
“An investment company.”
“Owned by whom?”
“I don't know.”
“Don't lie.”
“I don't.”
“Then who hired you?”
Damian looked at her.
And said nothing.
Celeste's face changed.
“You were hired.”
He didn't answer.
“You were hired to marry her.”
“No.”
“You were.”
“No.”
“Then explain the money.”
Damian's eyes hardened.
“Leave it alone.”
Celeste laughed bitterly.
“That is what you always say when the truth can destroy you.”
She walked toward the window.
“How much did they promise you?”
Damian didn't respond.
“How much?”
“Ten million.”
Celeste turned.
Her face went pale.
“Ten million dollars?”
“Yes.”
“For marrying Evelyn?”
“It wasn't that simple.”
“What was the condition?”
Damian stood.
“Celeste.”
“What was the condition?”
He finally said:
“I had to gain access to the trust.”
She stared at him.
“And if you couldn't?”
“They had someone else.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
Celeste shook her head.
“You're lying again.”
“I swear.”
“Then why are you afraid?”
Damian looked toward the window.
“Because the people behind Orchid don't forgive failure.”
Celeste felt cold.
“Who are they?”
“I don't know.”
“You expect me to believe you don't know who paid you ten million dollars?”
“I never met the person directly.”
“Then who did?”
Damian hesitated.
“Michael.”
Celeste frowned.
“Your brother?”
“Yes.”
“But you told Evelyn you didn't have a brother.”
“I told her what I needed her to believe.”
Celeste stared.
“How long has Michael been involved?”
“Since before the marriage.”
“And now?”
Damian didn't answer.
Celeste understood.
“Michael is still working with them.”
“Yes.”
“And you're afraid of him.”
Damian whispered:
“Yes.”
Celeste suddenly remembered another detail.
A detail Damian had once dismissed.
On the night of Evelyn's wedding, Celeste had seen a man standing across the street.
Dark coat.
Gray hair.
Watching the ceremony.
She had asked Damian who he was.
He had said:
“An old business associate.”
Now she wondered.
Was that man connected to Orchid?
She opened her phone and searched her photographs.
She found one.
Zoomed in.
The man's face became visible.
Celeste stared.
Then she recognized him.
Thomas Vale.
Evelyn's mother's former attorney.
Her stomach dropped.
“Damian.”
He looked at her.
“This man.”
She showed him the photograph.
Damian went pale.
“Where did you get that?”
“The wedding.”
“You kept this?”
“Yes.”
He stared at the image.
“That's Thomas Vale.”
“I know.”
“He's dead.”
Celeste looked at him.
“What?”
“He died six years ago.”
She slowly lowered the phone.
“No.”
“His obituary was published.”
“Then who is this?”
Damian didn't answer.
Three hours later, Celeste returned to the hotel.
She couldn't stop thinking about the photograph.
She searched public records.
Thomas Vale had indeed died.
Six years earlier.
Cancer.
Private funeral.
No survivors listed.
But the man in Celeste's photograph had been standing at Evelyn's wedding.
Alive.
Watching.
Someone had used his identity.
Someone who had access to the family.
Someone who knew the contract.
Someone who had been close enough to observe Evelyn for years.
Celeste opened the photograph again.
This time she noticed something behind the man.
A black sedan.
The license plate was partially visible.
She enhanced the image.
The plate belonged to a company vehicle.
ORCHID HOLDINGS.
Celeste's heart began racing.
She called her attorney.
“I need you to investigate a company.”
“Which company?”
“Orchid Holdings.”
Silence.
“Why?”
“Because I think it's connected to Damian.”
Her attorney hesitated.
“Celeste.”
“What?”
“It's not just connected to Damian.”
“What do you mean?”
“I ran a preliminary search.”
“And?”
“The company doesn't appear to have existed officially until after Evelyn's mother died.”
Celeste frowned.
“That makes no sense.”
“Exactly.”
“What else?”
“There's a second entity.”
“What entity?”
“Orchid Foundation.”
Celeste waited.
“The foundation has only one recorded beneficiary.”
“Who?”
Her attorney's voice became quiet.
“Evelyn Vance.”
Celeste stopped breathing.
That night, she went through every document she had ever received from Damian.
Prenuptial agreements.
Investment statements.
Hotel receipts.
Private correspondence.
And finally, an envelope she had forgotten.
It had been given to her three years earlier.
Damian had told her:
“Keep this somewhere safe.”
She had never opened it.
Now she did.
Inside was a photograph.
Damian and Evelyn on their wedding day.
But on the back, someone had written:
THE FIRST PHASE IS COMPLETE.
Celeste stared at the words.
Then she found a second photograph.
This one showed Damian entering a private building.
The date was two weeks before the wedding.
The building belonged to Orchid Holdings.
Celeste whispered:
“You bastard.”
He hadn't simply married Evelyn.
He had entered her life as part of a plan.
And Celeste had been part of it too.
Except she had never been told the entire plan.
At midnight, Celeste received a message from an unknown number.
You have discovered too much.
She stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
Stop investigating Orchid.
Then:
Damian has already chosen who will take the blame.
Celeste's heart began pounding.
She typed:
Who?
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Finally:
You.
Celeste dropped the phone.
The room seemed to shrink around her.
She understood.
Damian hadn't called her.
He hadn't answered.
He hadn't warned her.
Because he was preparing to sacrifice her.
If investigators needed someone to blame for the offshore transfers, Celeste could be presented as the mastermind.
If they needed a person who had pressured Damian, she was perfect.
If they needed someone connected to the missing money, her name was everywhere.
She had signed documents.
She had transferred funds.
She had sent messages.
Damian had made sure of it.
He had spent years creating evidence that could point toward her.
Celeste whispered:
“He was never going to save me.”
The next morning, she went to Evelyn.
Security nearly stopped her.
“I need to see Mrs. Cross.”
“She isn't accepting visitors.”
“Tell her Celeste Monroe is here.”
The guard hesitated.
Then his phone rang.
He listened.
“Mrs. Cross will see you.”
Celeste entered.
Evelyn was sitting by the window.
She looked calm.
Too calm.
Celeste placed a folder on the desk.
“I want protection.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“From Damian?”
“From everyone.”
“Why?”
“Because I know what he did.”
Evelyn waited.
Celeste opened the folder.
“Damian didn't marry you because he loved you.”
“I know.”
“He was paid.”
Evelyn's expression didn't change.
“How much?”
“Ten million.”
Sophia, standing behind her, stiffened.
“By whom?” Evelyn asked.
“Orchid Holdings.”
Evelyn went still.
“You know the name.”
“Yes.”
“Then you know more than I do.”
Celeste looked at her.
“There's something else.”
“What?”
“Your mother knew.”
Evelyn's eyes hardened.
“What did she know?”
“That Damian was being sent to you.”
Silence.
Celeste placed the photograph on the desk.
Evelyn picked it up.
Her younger self.
Her wedding.
And the shadowy figure across the street.
“Who is this?”
“I don't know.”
“That's Thomas Vale.”
“I know.”
“He died six years ago.”
Celeste looked at her.
“Then someone wanted you to think he was watching you.”
Evelyn's fingers tightened around the photograph.
“Why?”
Celeste shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Then she placed one final document on the desk.
“Maybe this will tell you.”
Evelyn opened it.
It was a payment authorization.
Twenty-five million dollars.
The recipient:
DAMIAN CROSS.
The sender:
ORCHID HOLDINGS.
Date:
Three weeks before Evelyn met him.
Evelyn stared.
Celeste whispered:
“That money wasn't for the wedding.”
“What was it for?”
Celeste looked directly into her eyes.
“For making sure you married him.”
Evelyn closed the folder.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then she asked:
“Why are you telling me this?”
Celeste's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I finally realized something.”
“What?”
“Damian never loved me either.”
Evelyn said nothing.
“He used me.”
“Yes.”
“He made me believe I was his partner.”
“Yes.”
“He told me we would have everything.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“And now?”
Celeste's voice broke.
“Now I'm the person he's going to sacrifice.”
Evelyn studied her.
Then asked:
“Are you willing to testify?”
Celeste nodded.
“Yes.”
“Against Damian?”
“Yes.”
“Against Orchid?”
Celeste hesitated.
Then:
“Yes.”
Evelyn leaned back.
“Then I will protect you.”
Celeste looked stunned.
“Why?”
Evelyn's expression was cold.
“Because Damian thought he could destroy every woman who discovered the truth.”
She closed the folder.
“He was wrong.”
That night, Damian received a message.
CELESTE TALKED.
He stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
SHE GAVE EVELYN THE PAYMENT RECORDS.
Damian closed his eyes.
For the first time, he understood that his entire plan was collapsing.
Then the final message appeared.
ACTIVATE PHASE TWO.
Damian stared at the words.
He had spent years believing he was manipulating Evelyn.
But now he understood something far more frightening.
He had never been the architect.
He had only been the tool.
And somewhere behind Orchid Holdings was the person who had designed the entire marriage.
The person who had paid him.
The person who had watched Evelyn.
And the person who was now preparing to remove Damian before he could expose them.
Damian looked at the city through the window.
Then whispered:
“Who are you?”
Across town, Evelyn opened her mother's final encrypted file.
A photograph appeared.
The same photograph Celeste had found.
But Evelyn noticed something neither Damian nor Celeste had seen.
In the corner of the image was a small handwritten symbol.
A flower.
An orchid.
Beneath it were three words:
HE IS YOUR FATHER.
Evelyn stopped breathing.
The screen went dark.
