Chapter 2: The Birthday That Became an Investigation

Chapter 2: The Birthday That Became an Investigation
The living room fell silent.
No one reached for the birthday cake.
No one touched the champagne.
The only sound was the click of a forensic camera documenting the scene.
One investigator approached Julián.
"Mr. Julián Ortega?"
"Yes?"
"We need you to remain where you are."
Julián laughed nervously.
"This is ridiculous. It's a family argument."
Ernesto spoke calmly.
"No."
"It's an assault investigation."
The forensic examiner photographed the fading bruises on Valeria's face and wrists.
Meanwhile, another investigator opened the black trash bag Ofelia had desperately tried to retrieve.
Inside were exactly what Valeria had described weeks earlier.
A forged loan application.
Property transfer documents.
Bank statements.
And a practice sheet covered with repeated attempts to imitate Ernesto Salgado's signature.
Ofelia's face turned white.
"I... I can explain."
"You'll have the opportunity," the investigator replied.
"But not here."
Julián turned toward Valeria in disbelief.
"You planned this?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"I finally stopped protecting you."
Ernesto stepped forward.
"For months, my daughter documented every injury."
"Every threatening message."
"Every unauthorized bank transfer."
"Every witness."
He looked directly at Julián.
"Today's confession was simply the final piece."
The investigator nodded.
"You admitted striking your wife in front of multiple witnesses."
"There is no misunderstanding."

For the first time, Julián realized the celebration had never been a trap for Valeria.
It had become one for him.
