Chapter 3: The House Built on Lies

As officers escorted Julián toward the front door, he shouted,

"That house belongs to me!"

Ernesto quietly handed another document to the lead investigator.

"No."

"It belongs to my daughter."

Years earlier, Ernesto had purchased the home in Valeria's name before her marriage.

The forged transfer documents hidden by Ofelia had never been legally registered.

They had simply failed.

Ofelia collapsed into a chair.

"Everything we did was for our family."

Ernesto looked at her with sadness rather than anger.

"You destroyed your family the moment you taught your son that cruelty deserved protection."

The domestic violence advocate gently placed a hand on Valeria's shoulder.

"You are safe now."

For the first time in years, Valeria believed those words.

She looked around the dining room.

The balloons.

The candles.

The untouched birthday cake.
