CHAPTER 12: THE ENEMY INSIDE THE EMPIRE

CHAPTER 12: THE ENEMY INSIDE THE EMPIRE

The greatest danger to an empire was never the enemy standing outside its walls.

Julian Cross finally understood that.

For years, he had looked outward.

Competitors.

Rivals.

Investors.

Business enemies.

He believed the threats came from people trying to take what he built.

He never imagined the greatest threat had been sitting beside him.

Guiding him.

Teaching him.

Victor Hale.

The man who had shaped his ambition.

The man who had encouraged his hunger.

The man who had quietly turned Julian against the only person who truly believed in him.

But after Victor's final message

Julian discovered something far more disturbing.

Victor was not the only person hiding secrets.

The message remained on his phone.

Your father disappeared because he discovered what Evelyn's family did.

Julian stared at it for hours.

Because he wanted to dismiss it.

He wanted to believe Victor was lying.

But Victor had known things nobody else knew.

About his father.

About Aurelia.

About Evelyn.

And that made the doubt dangerous.

Julian found Evelyn that morning in the original design room.

The place where their dream began.

She was reviewing old architectural plans.

She looked up when he entered.

"You found something."

It was not a question.

Julian placed his phone on the table.

She read the message.

Her expression changed.

"Victor."

"Yes."

"He wants you to doubt me."

Julian looked at her.

"Does he?"

The question was quiet.

But it hurt.

For a moment, Evelyn said nothing.

Then she closed the file.

"After everything..."

Her voice was controlled.

"You still wonder if I'm the enemy?"

Julian immediately regretted the question.

"No."

But the damage was done.

Because Evelyn had spent years being doubted.

By executives.

By investors.

By the world.

And now

even Julian.

"I don't know what to believe."

Julian admitted.

Evelyn looked at him.

"That is exactly what Victor wants."

A pause.

"He doesn't need you to trust him."

"He only needs you to stop trusting everyone else."

The words hit Julian.

Because that was exactly how Victor worked.

Isolation.

Confusion.

Dependence.

But then Evelyn said something unexpected.

"However..."

Julian looked up.

"I understand why you asked."

He frowned.

"You do?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"Because I have secrets too."

The room became silent.

Julian looked at her.

"What secrets?"

Evelyn hesitated.

For the first time since returning to Aurelia

she looked uncertain.

"Things I should have told you years ago."

Before Julian could respond, alarms suddenly echoed through the building.

Security alert.

Everyone froze.

Aurelia had never sounded an emergency alarm.

Not even during the ownership crisis.

Thomas Reed rushed into the room.

"We have a problem."

Evelyn stood.

"What happened?"

"The main servers were accessed."

Julian's expression changed.

"By who?"

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

"We don't know."

Then he looked at Julian.

"But they used your old authorization code."

Silence.

Everyone turned toward him.

Julian felt the accusation before anyone spoke.

"You think I did this?"

Nobody answered.

That was enough.

The worst part was not being suspected.

The worst part was understanding why.

Because for years

Julian had been the person who hid things.

"I didn't do this."

He said.

Evelyn watched him carefully.

"I believe you."

The answer surprised everyone.

Especially Julian.

"You do?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Because if you wanted to destroy Aurelia..."

Her eyes hardened.

"...you would have done it openly."

The investigation began immediately.

Security teams searched the building.

Technology experts reviewed the breach.

Within an hour, they found something.

The attacker had not stolen financial information.

They had accessed something else.

The original employee records.

The founding documents.

The private archives.

"They're searching for history."

Julian said.

Evelyn looked at him.

"Not money."

"No."

A pause.

"The truth."

That afternoon, they discovered the first clue.

A hidden file.

Created twenty years earlier.

The name shocked Evelyn.

ALEXANDER HART

Her father.

She opened it.

Inside was a recording.

An old video.

Alexander Hart appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

Serious.

Evelyn immediately recognized him.

"Dad..."

The recording began.

"If you are watching this, something has gone wrong."

He looked directly into the camera.

"Someone has discovered the truth about the empire."

Julian and Evelyn exchanged looks.

Alexander continued.

"Aurelia was never just a business."

A pause.

"It was created to protect something."

Julian frowned.

"Protect what?"

The recording continued.

"The Hart family made mistakes."

Evelyn froze.

Mistakes?

Her father continued.

"We believed controlling everything would prevent others from abusing power."

"But control can become another form of corruption."

The words shocked Evelyn.

Because her father was admitting something she never expected.

The Hart family was not perfect.

Then Alexander said the sentence that changed everything.

"The biggest mistake we made was involving Julian Cross."

Julian became still.

Evelyn looked at him.

Alexander continued.

"Not because he was dangerous."

A pause.

"But because he was the only person who could expose us."

Silence.

Julian stepped back.

"What does that mean?"

The recording continued.

"Julian's father discovered the truth."

"He tried to reveal it."

"And because of that..."

The video glitched.

Then Alexander spoke the final words.

"Julian Cross was never a tool."

"He was the evidence."

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Julian looked at Evelyn.

"What evidence?"

She had no answer.

Because she truly did not know.

Then the archive door opened.

A security guard entered.

"Mrs. Hart."

She turned.

"We found someone inside the building."

Julian immediately stood.

"Who?"

The guard hesitated.

Then answered:

"Victor Hale."

Everyone froze.

"Where?"

Evelyn asked.

The guard swallowed.

"The old executive office."

The office Julian used before he was removed.

They rushed there.

But when they arrived

Victor was gone.

Only one thing remained.

A folder on the desk.

With Julian's name written on it.

Julian opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph of his father.

Alive.

Taken recently.

On the back were five words.

"He is still alive."

Julian stopped breathing.

Because everything he believed about his father

about Victor

about Evelyn

had just changed.

The enemy inside the empire was not just trying to destroy Aurelia.

He was forcing everyone to uncover a truth that had been buried for decades.

And now Julian had one question.

The question that terrified him most.

If his father was alive...

May you like

Why had he never come back?
