CHAPTER 5: THE NIGHT THE BOARD TURNED

CHAPTER 5: THE NIGHT THE BOARD TURNED

The boardroom had always been Julian Cross’s kingdom.

For nine years, he sat at the head of that table while everyone else waited for his decisions.

Executives listened.

Investors agreed.

Employees followed.

The room represented everything Julian believed he had earned.

Power.

Respect.

Control.

But that morning, when Julian entered the boardroom

something felt different.

Nobody stood.

That was the first sign.

In the past, executives would rise the moment he walked in.

Not because they were required to.

Because they wanted to show loyalty.

Now they remained seated.

Waiting.

Watching.

Julian stopped near the door.

His eyes moved across the room.

Michael Reed.

Sarah Collins.

Thomas Grant.

David Miller.

Every major department head was present.

And at the end of the table

was an empty chair.

Julian frowned.

"Who is that for?"

Nobody answered.

Then the door opened.

Evelyn Hart walked inside.

The room changed instantly.

Not because she demanded attention.

She never did.

Because everyone knew.

The person who created the foundation of Aurelia had returned.

Julian stared at her.

For a second, he forgot to breathe.

She looked different.

Not because of her clothes.

Not because of her appearance.

Because she no longer looked like someone waiting to be chosen.

She looked like someone who had finally chosen herself.

"Evelyn."

Julian said.

She nodded.

"Julian."

No emotion.

No anger.

No affection.

Just two people who once loved each other standing on opposite sides of a table.

She walked to the empty chair.

Sat down.

At the head of the table.

Julian's jaw tightened.

"That is my seat."

Evelyn looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"It was always mine."

The room became silent.

The meeting began with legal documents.

Not accusations.

Not drama.

Just facts.

The company's legal advisor stood.

"Today we are here to confirm the ownership structure of Aurelia International Holdings."

Julian leaned forward.

"This is unnecessary."

The lawyer continued.

"According to the original founding agreement, the Hart Legacy Trust maintains controlling ownership rights over all properties developed under the Aurelia brand."

Julian interrupted.

"I built this company."

The lawyer looked at him.

"You managed this company."

The difference was brutal.

A few executives lowered their eyes.

Because everyone understood.

Management was not ownership.

Julian looked at Evelyn.

"You let me believe I owned it."

Evelyn remained calm.

"No."

A pause.

"You let yourself believe it."

The words struck harder than anger.

Michael Reed opened another file.

"There is another matter."

Julian looked at him.

"What?"

"Executive compensation adjustments."

A confused expression appeared.

"Why?"

Michael glanced at Evelyn.

"Because during the last two years, several financial decisions require review."

Julian's expression changed.

"Are you accusing me of something?"

Nobody answered immediately.

That silence was enough.

The documents were placed in front of him.

Payments.

Transfers.

Consulting agreements.

Private contracts.

Julian scanned them.

Then stopped.

One name appeared repeatedly.

V.L. CONSULTING GROUP

His eyes narrowed.

"What is this?"

Nobody spoke.

Evelyn looked at the documents.

"Vanessa Laurent."

The room became colder.

Julian looked at her.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying she was not only your affair partner."

A pause.

"She was connected to financial decisions inside Aurelia."

Julian stood.

"That's impossible."

Evelyn looked at him.

"Is it?"

For the first time, Julian felt something worse than anger.

Confusion.

Because he knew Vanessa.

Or at least he thought he did.

He remembered her as someone who admired him.

Someone who made him feel powerful.

Someone who never challenged him.

But now

he wondered.

Was she truly in love with him?

Or was he simply useful?

The legal advisor continued.

"We discovered unauthorized payments made from company accounts."

Julian shook his head.

"No."

He looked around.

"You think I would steal from my own company?"

Nobody accused him directly.

But nobody defended him either.

Evelyn watched him carefully.

Because this was the moment she hated.

Not because Julian was losing.

Because she finally saw how alone he had become.

Everyone around him had benefited from his power.

But nobody truly stood beside him.

The meeting continued.

Every hour revealed another hidden decision.

Every document exposed another secret.

By evening, Julian's reputation was damaged.

Not destroyed.

Not yet.

But cracks had appeared.

After the meeting ended, Julian stayed behind.

The room was empty.

Except for Evelyn.

"You knew."

He said.

She looked at him.

"About the documents?"

"No."

He stepped closer.

"About everything."

Evelyn was silent.

"You knew I was changing."

A pause.

"You knew I was becoming someone else."

Her eyes softened.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you stop me?"

The question surprised her.

Because after everything

that was the question he chose.

Not:

Why did I hurt you?

But:

Why didn't you stop me?

Evelyn looked away.

"I tried."

Julian froze.

"When?"

She laughed quietly.

Not happily.

"Every time I told you I missed you."

A pause.

"Every time I asked you to come home."

Another pause.

"Every time I reminded you that we started this together."

Her voice became quieter.

"You just stopped listening."

Julian had no answer.

Outside the boardroom, reporters waited.

The news had already spread.

AURELIA OWNERSHIP DISPUTE DEEPENS

JULIAN CROSS FACES INTERNAL CHALLENGE

HART FAMILY RETURNS TO LUXURY EMPIRE

The world was watching.

But Julian was no longer worried about the world.

He was worried about one person.

The woman walking away from him.

"Evelyn."

She stopped.

He wanted to say something.

Anything.

An apology.

A reason.

A confession.

But pride stopped him.

It always did.

So instead, he asked:

"Are you happy now?"

Evelyn turned.

The question surprised her.

"Happy?"

"After taking everything from me."

She stared at him.

Then answered:

"I didn't take anything."

A pause.

"I removed the illusion."

Julian looked confused.

"What illusion?"

Evelyn's voice was gentle.

"The illusion that you could build an empire by standing on someone else and never looking down."

She walked away.

That night, Julian returned to his penthouse.

The city lights were beautiful.

The view was still perfect.

Everything looked the same.

Except him.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"Mr. Cross."

"Who is this?"

"Someone who knows what Evelyn Hart is planning."

Julian became still.

"What do you want?"

The man laughed softly.

"To help you."

Julian looked toward the window.

"Why?"

A pause.

"Because Evelyn isn't the only person who has been hiding secrets."

The call ended.

Julian stared at the phone.

For nine years, he believed Evelyn was the biggest secret in his life.

He was wrong.

Because beneath Aurelia's success

beneath the marriage

beneath the betrayal

there was another truth waiting.

And when Julian discovered it

he would finally understand:

The woman he threw away was never his enemy.

May you like

She was the only person protecting him from one.
