CHAPTER 9: THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 9: THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL
Julian Cross spent nine years building a kingdom.
Three days destroying it.
And one night discovering he was never the king.
The message remained on his phone.
The photograph of Evelyn inside the archive room.
The warning beneath it.
She is searching for the truth.
Stop her before she finds it.
Julian read it again.
Then again.
A month ago, he would have ignored the message.
He would have assumed someone was threatening him.
He would have attacked first.
But everything had changed.
Because for the first time in his lifeâŠ
Julian Cross was afraid of losing someone else.
Not his company.
Not his reputation.
Not his money.
Evelyn.
He drove to Aurelia immediately.
The streets were almost empty.
Rain covered the city.
The same kind of rain that fell the night he threw her out.
Only this timeâŠ
he was the one standing outside.
When he arrived, the main entrance was locked.
The guards recognized him.
"Mr. Cross."
Julian looked at them.
"She's still inside."
They nodded.
"Yes."
He expected them to stop him.
They didn't.
That surprised him.
Because before, everyone opened doors for him.
NowâŠ
they opened them because they trusted him.
A completely different feeling.
The archive room was dark.
Julian found Evelyn sitting on the floor surrounded by old documents.
She looked up.
"What are you doing here?"
Her voice was calm.
Not afraid.
Julian held up his phone.
"Because someone is watching you."
Evelyn's expression changed slightly.
"Who?"
He handed her the phone.
She studied the image.
Then the message.
Her face became serious.
"How long have you known?"
Julian hesitated.
"Tonight."
A pause.
"Before tonight, I didn't know."
Evelyn looked at him.
"That's becoming a habit."
The words hurt because they were true.
"I know."
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Evelyn returned to the documents.
"Victor."
Julian frowned.
"You think it's him?"
"My grandfather did."
She showed him the letter.
Julian read it.
The danger was the person who taught him how to betray you.
His expression changed.
"Victor trained me."
Evelyn looked at him.
"What?"
"He was the person who helped me negotiate my first contracts."
A pause.
"He introduced me to investors."
Another pause.
"He taught me how to think like a businessman."
Evelyn slowly understood.
"Then he was close enough to influence you."
Julian looked away.
Too close.
For years, Julian believed his success came from himself.
His ambition.
His intelligence.
His instincts.
But now he wondered.
How much of his thinking was actually his?
How many decisions were planted?
How many desires were created?
"I need to find him."
Julian said.
Evelyn looked surprised.
"You?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Julian looked at her.
"Because I helped him."
The honesty stopped her.
That was the first time Julian admitted it.
Not:
He tricked me.
He used me.
He manipulated me.
But:
I helped him.
Because betrayal was not always one person hurting another.
Sometimes it was someone accepting the wrong version of themselves.
The next morning, Aurelia faced another crisis.
A major investor withdrew.
Then another.
Then another.
News channels exploded.
AURELIA EMPIRE FACES FINANCIAL UNCERTAINTY
INVESTORS QUESTION FUTURE UNDER HART OWNERSHIP
Executives panicked.
Thomas Reed entered Evelyn's office.
"We have a problem."
She looked up.
"How serious?"
"Very."
He placed documents on her desk.
"Someone leaked internal financial information."
Evelyn opened the file.
The numbers were real.
But incomplete.
Someone had removed important context.
Making Aurelia appear unstable.
"Who had access?"
Thomas hesitated.
"Only senior leadership."
Evelyn understood.
Someone inside.
At that moment, Julian entered.
"I know who."
Everyone looked at him.
Evelyn stood.
"Who?"
Julian looked at the documents.
"Victor."
Silence.
"You are sure?"
"No."
A pause.
"But I know how he operates."
Julian explained.
Victor never attacked directly.
He created fear.
Then offered solutions.
He made people believe they needed him.
That was how he controlled people.
Including Julian.
"He told me I was special."
Julian said quietly.
Evelyn watched him.
"He told me I was different from everyone else."
A pause.
"He convinced me that trusting people was weakness."
The room became silent.
Because everyone understood.
Victor did not create Julian's darkness.
But he knew exactly how to feed it.
That evening, Julian found Victor.
An abandoned Aurelia development site outside the city.
The place where the first expansion failed.
The place where Julian once thought his career was over.
Victor stood near the unfinished building.
"I wondered when you would come."
Julian stopped.
"You knew?"
Victor smiled.
"I knew you would eventually understand."
"Understand what?"
Victor turned.
"That Evelyn was always the obstacle."
Julian stared.
"No."
The answer came instantly.
Victor noticed.
Interesting.
"You changed."
Julian's expression hardened.
"Because I finally saw clearly."
Victor laughed.
"Did you?"
A pause.
"Or did she convince you?"
Julian said nothing.
Victor stepped closer.
"Julian, do you know why I chose you?"
"I don't care."
"Yes, you do."
Victor smiled.
"Because you wanted to be important."
The words hit.
"You were brilliant."
Victor continued.
"But you were insecure."
"You wanted people to see you."
A pause.
"I gave you that."
Julian's face changed.
"You destroyed my marriage."
"No."
Victor answered.
"You destroyed it."
Silence.
"You chose the attention."
Another pause.
"You chose the applause."
Another pause.
"You chose yourself."
Julian hated that the words were partly true.
"Why?"
Julian asked.
Victor looked toward the unfinished building.
"Because Aurelia was never supposed to belong to you."
A pause.
"It was supposed to belong to me."
Julian froze.
"What?"
Victor smiled.
"My family helped create the original luxury network before the Harts."
Evelyn's grandfather had removed them.
And Victor had spent decades planning revenge.
"You were my doorway."
Julian's face went cold.
"I was your puppet."
Victor smiled.
"At first."
A pause.
"Then you became useful."
Julian attacked him.
Not violently.
Not recklessly.
But with the anger of a man finally seeing the truth.
"You used me."
Victor stepped back.
"I improved you."
"No."
Julian said.
"You destroyed me."
Before Victor could answer, Julian's phone rang.
Evelyn.
He answered immediately.
"What's wrong?"
Her voice was tense.
"Julian."
A pause.
"The original trust documents are missing."
His heart stopped.
"What?"
"Someone entered the archive."
Silence.
Then Evelyn said:
"They didn't steal money."
A pause.
"They stole the document that proves ownership."
Julian looked at Victor.
Victor smiled.
Because he had planned everything.
"Where are you?"
Julian asked.
"At Aurelia."
"Leave."
Evelyn became quiet.
"Why?"
Julian looked at Victor.
Because he finally understood.
This was no longer about business.
This was war.
"Because he knows you found out."
The line went silent.
Then Evelyn asked:
"Who?"
Julian looked at the man who had shaped his entire life.
And answered:
May you like
"The man who taught me how to lose everything."
