We didn’t speak on the way out of the clinic.
Ethan followed me outside like a man walking behind a life he no longer understood.
Finally, he spoke.
“You should have told me.”
I stopped walking.
I turned to him.
“Told you what? That you humiliated me? That you replaced me in a week? That you didn’t even ask for the truth?”
His jaw tightened.
“I thought—”
“You didn’t think,” I cut him off.
“You assumed.”

“I was scared,” he admitted quietly. “I thought I wasn’t ready to be a father.”
I laughed once.

I walked away.
