Chapter 2 — The Woman in the Black SUV

Chapter 2 — The Woman in the Black SUV
The black SUV disappeared before anyone could reach the parking lot.
I stood in the hotel doorway with Lily pressed against my chest, staring at the empty street.
Daniel was beside me.
For once, he wasn't talking.
He wasn't explaining.
He wasn't telling me I was emotional.
He wasn't asking me to calm down.
He was simply staring at the road as if he had seen a ghost.
My mother came up behind me.
“Jennifer, we need to go.”
I looked at her.
She was frightened.
Not confused.
Frightened.
That scared me more than the stranger had.
“Mom, take Lily to the car.”
“What about you?”
“I'll be right behind you.”
“No.”
She tightened her hold on my daughter.
“You're coming with us.”
I looked at Daniel.
He was still watching the street.
“Not yet.”
My mother followed my gaze.
“Jennifer…”
“I need answers.”
Daniel finally looked at us.
“You need to leave.”
I turned toward him.
“You said that man was here for Lily.”
“I don't know that.”
“You just said he was.”
“I said I think he was.”
“Why?”
He rubbed his face.
“Because of the account.”
“What account?”
He looked around.
“Not here.”
I almost laughed.
“Not here?”
He nodded.
“There are too many people.”
I stared at him.
“You've been lying to me for months, and now you're worried about privacy?”
His expression hardened.
“This isn't about Chloe anymore.”
“I know.”
“No, Jennifer. You don't.”
He stepped closer.
“You need to listen to me.”
I moved back.
“You've lost the right to tell me what to do.”
“I know.”
His voice was different.
Quiet.
Almost desperate.
“Then listen anyway.”
We went into a private conference room at the back of the hotel.
My mother refused to leave Lily alone, so she sat beside me with the baby in her arms.
Daniel closed the door.
He checked the hallway twice.
Then he pulled out his phone.
“I need to show you something.”
He opened his banking application.
I looked at the screen.
Several accounts appeared.
Our joint savings.
His personal account.
His business account.
And another account I had never seen before.
“What's that?”
“My private reserve.”
“You have a private reserve?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
Daniel hesitated.
“About eighty thousand.”
My heart sank.
“Had?”
He looked at me.
“What?”
“You said had.”
He stared at the screen.
Then whispered:
“It's gone.”
I stared at him.
“When?”
“I don't know.”
“You don't know?”
“No.”
“How can eighty thousand dollars disappear from an account and you not know?”
“Because I didn't authorize the transfers.”
I crossed my arms.
“Then who did?”
“I don't know.”
“Daniel.”
“I swear.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You swore you loved me.”
He flinched.
“That isn't fair.”
“Neither is any of this.”
He turned the phone toward me.
There were twelve transfers.
Different dates.
Different amounts.
$7,500.
$4,800.
$11,000.
$6,200.
$9,000.
All sent to different accounts.
Some belonged to companies.
Some were personal accounts.
One had been transferred overseas.
I stared at the screen.
“Who are these people?”
“I don't know.”
“You expect me to believe someone stole eighty thousand dollars from you and you didn't notice?”
“I noticed.”
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
My eyes narrowed.
“And you didn't tell me?”
“I thought I could fix it.”
“Like Chloe?”
His face tightened.
“Don't.”
“You thought you could replace it before I noticed.”
“Yes.”
“So you knew there was something wrong.”
“Yes.”
“But you kept using our money.”
“I had no choice.”
I stared at him.
“You always have a choice.”
He looked down.
“No.”
“What do you mean?”
He sat.
For the first time that night, Daniel looked exhausted.
“I've been receiving messages.”
“What kind?”
“Threats.”
My stomach tightened.
“From whom?”
“I don't know.”
“What do they say?”
He hesitated.
Then opened his messages.
There were dozens.
No names.
No numbers.
Just anonymous encrypted messages.
The first one said:
YOU WILL PAY WHAT YOU OWE.
Another:
SHE CANNOT KNOW.
Another:
KEEP THE FAMILY TOGETHER.
Another:
THE CHILD MUST REMAIN WITH YOU.
I stopped breathing.
I looked at him.
“What child?”
Daniel didn't answer.
“The last message.”
I pointed to the screen.
THE CHILD MUST REMAIN WITH YOU.
“Who are they talking about?”
Daniel looked at Lily.
My entire body went cold.
“No.”
“I don't know.”
“You don't know?”
“I swear.”
“Then why did you say the man was here for her?”
“Because the messages started after Lily was born.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
My mother suddenly spoke.
“Jennifer.”
I turned.
She looked down at Lily.
“She needs to go home.”
I nodded.
Daniel stood.
“I'll drive you.”
“No.”
“I can protect you.”
“You couldn't protect me from yourself.”
His face fell.
“I deserve that.”
“Yes.”
I stood.
“And I don't trust you.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
I walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
“Daniel.”
He looked up.
“What?”
“If anyone comes near Lily…”
I stepped closer.
“You tell me immediately.”
He nodded.
“I will.”
“Even if it exposes you.”
“Yes.”
“Even if it destroys your career.”
“Yes.”
“Even if Chloe is involved.”
His eyes closed.
“Yes.”
I opened the door.
“Then maybe you can start being useful.”
The drive home took twenty-five minutes.
My mother sat beside me in the back seat.
Lily slept in her car seat.
I watched the road through the window.
At the third intersection, I saw it.
A black SUV.
Same model.
Same dark windows.
It was two cars behind us.
My heart began pounding.
“Mom.”
She looked at me.
“What?”
“Don't look behind us.”
Her expression changed.
“What happened?”
“The SUV.”
She instinctively turned.
I grabbed her hand.
“I said don't.”
She looked forward again.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
The SUV stayed behind us.
One block.
Two.
Three.
I called the driver.
“Take the next right.”
He did.
The SUV followed.
My mother whispered:
“Jennifer…”
“I know.”
At the next intersection, I told him to turn again.
The SUV followed.
Lily stirred in her seat.
I checked the rearview mirror.
The SUV was closer.
Then the driver suddenly accelerated.
The SUV accelerated too.
My mother reached for my hand.
“What do we do?”
I called Daniel.
He answered immediately.
“Where are you?”
“Someone is following us.”
Silence.
“Who?”
“The black SUV.”
His voice changed.
“Don't go home.”
“What?”
“Do not go home.”
“Why?”
“Because they'll know where you live.”
My blood ran cold.
“Where should I go?”
“Go to the police.”
“Daniel—”
“Jennifer, listen to me.”
His voice was urgent.
“Don't stop anywhere.”
The line went dead.
I stared at the phone.
Then the SUV disappeared.
It had turned down another street.
My mother exhaled.
“Maybe we lost them.”
I didn't answer.
Because something about the way Daniel had said it made me certain.
He hadn't been surprised.
He had been expecting it.
We drove to my mother's house.
I stayed awake until three in the morning.
Nothing happened.
No cars.
No calls.
No messages.
Eventually, exhaustion won.
I fell asleep on the couch.
At 6:14 a.m., my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One photograph.
I opened it.
My heart stopped.
It was a picture of me sleeping on my mother's couch.
Taken through the window.
The timestamp was 3:17 a.m.
I sat upright.
My mother woke.
“What happened?”
I couldn't speak.
I showed her the phone.
Her face went white.
“We need to call the police.”
“Yes.”
I stood.
Then another message appeared.
YOU WERE WARNED.
My fingers shook.
A third message.
STOP ASKING ABOUT THE MONEY.
Then a fourth.
THE GIRL IS NOT YOURS TO PROTECT.
I stared at those words.
My mother grabbed my arm.
“Jennifer.”
I looked at her.
“Who would say that?”
“I don't know.”
I whispered:
“But I think Daniel does.”
I called my attorney.
Her name was Rachel Morgan.
She had represented me for four months.
Until that morning, I had told her about the affair.
The money.
The divorce.
The baby.
But I had not told her about the messages.
I told her everything.
She was silent for several seconds.
“Jennifer, I need you to listen carefully.”
“I'm listening.”
“Do not go home.”
“I won't.”
“Do not meet Daniel alone.”
“I won't.”
“Do not contact Chloe.”
“Why?”
“Because if someone is manipulating Daniel's accounts, Chloe may be involved.”
“You think she is?”
“I don't know.”
“Then what do I do?”
“Send me every message.”
“I will.”
“And Jennifer?”
“Yes?”
“Don't delete anything.”
“I won't.”
“Someone is trying to frighten you.”
I looked at Lily.
“It's working.”
Rachel's voice softened.
“Fear is useful to them.”
“What isn't?”
“Evidence.”
That afternoon, Rachel met me at a private office.
She placed three folders on the table.
“The first contains your financial records.”
The second.
“Daniel's known transfers.”
The third.
“Everything related to Chloe.”
I stared at them.
“How much did he actually give her?”
Rachel opened the second folder.
“Fifteen thousand three hundred dollars that you know about.”
I nodded.
“And the missing eighty thousand?”
“We're investigating.”
“Could it have been stolen?”
“Possibly.”
“Could Daniel have transferred it?”
“Yes.”
“Could Chloe have received it?”
“Yes.”
I stared at her.
“Then we know nothing.”
Rachel shook her head.
“No.”
She opened another document.
“We know something.”
She pointed at a bank transfer.
“This transaction was made three days before Lily was born.”
I looked at the amount.
$12,000.
“What is this?”
“Payment to a company called Blackridge Consulting.”
“What's that?”
“I don't know.”
“Who owns it?”
Rachel looked at me.
“That is the problem.”
She turned the page.
The company was registered to a holding corporation.
The holding corporation belonged to another company.
That company belonged to a trust.
And the trust was controlled by an attorney.
I stared at the chain.
“Who is the beneficiary?”
Rachel hesitated.
“That's what we're trying to determine.”
“Why?”
“Because the trust was created seventeen years ago.”
I frowned.
“By whom?”
She slid the final document toward me.
My hands went cold.
The name at the bottom was:
Richard Whitmore.
I stared.
“Daniel's father?”
Rachel nodded.
“What does he have to do with this?”
“I don't know yet.”
“But you're investigating him?”
“Yes.”
I leaned back.
“Rachel.”
She looked at me.
“What?”
“I think Daniel's father knows more than he says.”
That evening, I returned to my mother's house.
Daniel was waiting outside.
I almost turned around.
He stepped forward.
“Please.”
I stayed inside the car.
“What do you want?”
“To talk.”
“About what?”
“The money.”
I lowered the window.
“What about it?”
“I found something.”
My heart beat faster.
“What?”
He held out a USB drive.
“Everything I've been hiding.”
I stared at it.
“Why now?”
“Because I think they're coming after you.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn't.”
That answer surprised me.
Daniel looked exhausted.
“You shouldn't trust me.”
He held out the drive again.
“But you should see what's on it.”
I didn't take it.
“What is it?”
“Financial records.”
“Yours?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“Messages.”
“From Chloe?”
“Some.”
“From who else?”
He looked at me.
“People you don't know.”
I stared at him.
“Why didn't you give this to me before?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of losing your marriage?”
“No.”
His voice dropped.
“Of dying.”
Silence.
I finally opened the car door.
“Put it on the ground.”
He looked confused.
“What?”
“Put the drive on the ground.”
He did.
I waited until he stepped back.
Then I got out and picked it up.
He looked at me.
“Jennifer.”
“What?”
“If you open that…”
He stopped.
“If I open it?”
“You may never look at me the same way again.”
I almost smiled.
“Daniel.”
“Yes?”
“I don't think that's possible.”
That night, Rachel opened the USB drive.
There were 146 files.
Bank statements.
Invoices.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Messages.
And one folder marked:
PROJECT LILY.
I stared at the screen.
“Open it.”
Rachel hesitated.
“You're sure?”
“Yes.”
She clicked.
There were photographs.
Hospital records.
Insurance forms.
Birth certificates.
Financial documents.
And a spreadsheet.
At the top was one sentence:
PHASE ONE — SECURE CONTROL OF THE CHILD.
My hands became cold.
“Rachel.”
“I see it.”
We kept scrolling.
There were columns.
Medical Dependency.
Financial Dependency.
Custody Exposure.
Parental Weakness.
Then:
Target Mother — Jennifer Whitmore.
I stopped breathing.
Rachel stared at the screen.
“This isn't an affair.”
“No.”
“This is a plan.”
I looked at the final column.
There was a name.
Not Daniel.
Not Chloe.
Not Mason.
A name I knew.
A name I had heard at every family gathering.
A name that belonged to the man who had stood beside Daniel at Lily's baptism.
Richard Whitmore.
I covered my mouth.
Rachel whispered:
“Your father-in-law.”
The next morning, I received another message.
Unknown number.
NOW YOU KNOW ENOUGH.
Then:
ASK YOUR HUSBAND WHY HIS FATHER HAS BEEN TRACKING YOUR DAUGHTER SINCE BEFORE SHE WAS BORN.
I stared at the screen.
My daughter.
Since before she was born.
I looked at Lily sleeping in her crib.
Then at the black SUV parked across the street.
This time, I could see the driver.
A woman.
Dark hair.
Sunglasses.
She sat completely still.
Watching the house.
Watching me.
I reached for my phone.
I zoomed in.
And my blood froze.
I knew her.
I had seen her before.
Not at the hotel.
Not with Daniel.
At Chloe's hospital.
She had been standing beside Chloe's room the day I discovered the affair.
I had assumed she was a nurse.
She wasn't.
She was the woman who had signed for one of Daniel's largest transfers.
The woman whose name appeared in the financial records.
The woman Daniel had never mentioned.
I whispered her name.
“Victoria Hale.”
The woman in the SUV slowly lifted her head.
As if she had heard me through the glass.
Then she smiled.
And drove away.
I stood frozen beside the window.
Rachel looked at me.
“Who was that?”
I didn't answer.
Because I finally understood why Daniel had been afraid.
The affair had been a distraction.
Chloe had been a distraction.
Even the missing $80,000 had been a distraction.
May you like
Someone had been building a plan around my daughter since before she was born.
And I had just seen the woman who was running it.
