Chapter 5 — The Man Behind Chloe

Chapter 5 — The Man Behind Chloe

The photograph remained on the table all night.

I couldn't stop looking at it.

Lily.

Three months old.

Sleeping in my arms.

The picture had been taken without my knowledge.

Without my permission.

Without my knowing someone was close enough to watch us.

On the back, Victoria had written six words:

Your daughter was never supposed to exist.

Those words frightened me.

But what frightened me more was the question they created.

Why?

Why had someone planned around my daughter before she was even born?

Why had Richard created a trust before I knew I was pregnant?

Why had Victoria been tracking Lily?

And why was Chloe's baby somehow connected to the same financial structure?

There was one person who might know.

The man behind Chloe.

Ethan Hale.

Victoria's missing son.

Ava's biological father.

The man everyone had apparently been trying to erase.

At eight the next morning, Rachel arrived.

She placed a file on my kitchen table.

“We found him.”

I stared at her.

“Ethan?”

She nodded.

“Alive.”

My heart began pounding.

“Where?”

“Michigan.”

I looked at her.

“Michigan?”

“He's been living under another name.”

“Why?”

“Because someone tried to kill him three years ago.”

My mouth went dry.

“Who?”

Rachel opened the file.

“That's what we're trying to establish.”

She turned the photograph toward me.

A man stood outside a small mechanic's garage.

Dark hair.

Short beard.

Tired eyes.

He looked nothing like the wealthy Hale family I had imagined.

His name on the photograph was:

Evan Harris.

Rachel tapped the file.

“His real name is Ethan Hale.”

I stared at his face.

“Does he know about Ava?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He's been looking for her.”

My heart tightened.

“Then why didn't he come forward?”

Rachel looked at me.

“Because he believes Victoria will kill her if she discovers where he is.”

We drove to Michigan that afternoon.

Daniel insisted on coming.

I almost refused.

Then I remembered his promise.

Even if it destroyed his family.

Even if it destroyed him.

I let him come.

Chloe came too.

She refused to leave Ava behind.

So four adults and two babies traveled north with a security officer Rachel had hired.

Nobody spoke much.

We were all carrying secrets.

Some of them were mine.

Some were Daniel's.

Some belonged to Chloe.

And some belonged to a family that had spent years pretending it was untouchable.

Ethan lived above the garage.

The building was small.

Old.

Nothing like the Whitmore mansion.

He opened the door before we knocked twice.

His eyes went directly to Chloe.

Then Ava.

He froze.

For several seconds, he couldn't move.

Chloe began crying.

“Ethan.”

His face broke.

He stepped forward.

“Is that her?”

Chloe nodded.

He looked at the baby.

“My daughter.”

Ava stirred.

Ethan covered his mouth.

I watched him.

There was no greed in his face.

No calculation.

Only grief.

He had missed the first months of his daughter's life.

He had missed her birth.

Her first smile.

Her first night.

Her first everything.

Because someone had taken those moments from him.

And I suddenly understood why Victoria had been so desperate to keep him hidden.

We went upstairs.

Ethan sat across from Chloe.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I was afraid.”

“Of my mother?”

“Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

“She found you.”

Chloe nodded.

“She found me before Ava was born.”

“What did she say?”

“That she could protect us.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“She doesn't protect people.”

“I know.”

“What did she want?”

Chloe looked down.

“Ava.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“Why?”

“She said Ava belonged to the family.”

“She is family.”

“Not to her.”

“What do you mean?”

Chloe whispered:

“She said Ava was an asset.”

Silence.

Ethan's expression changed.

“She used that word?”

“Yes.”

He stood.

“That's why.”

“Why what?”

“That's why she wanted me dead.”

Rachel leaned forward.

“Explain.”

Ethan walked to the window.

“My father left a trust.”

“Richard?”

Ethan nodded.

“Before he died.”

I frowned.

“Your father isn't Richard.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“My father was Richard's brother.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

Ethan nodded.

“Thomas Whitmore.”

I stared at Daniel.

Daniel looked stunned.

“My uncle?”

Ethan nodded.

“Your father and my father were brothers.”

Rachel's eyes narrowed.

“So Ethan is part of the Whitmore family.”

“Yes.”

“And Victoria?”

“My mother married into the Hale family.”

I looked at Chloe.

Ava suddenly made a small sound.

Ethan looked down.

His expression softened.

Then he continued.

“My father created a trust before he died.”

“How much?”

“Hundreds of millions.”

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“How much?”

“About three hundred million dollars.”

Daniel whispered:

“That's impossible.”

Ethan smiled without humor.

“That's what my mother wants everyone to believe.”

Rachel leaned forward.

“Who controls the trust?”

“My mother tried.”

“Why couldn't she?”

“Because my father created conditions.”

“What conditions?”

Ethan looked at me.

“The money goes to his descendants.”

I frowned.

“Meaning?”

“His biological children.”

Ethan looked at Ava.

“And grandchildren.”

My heart tightened.

“That's why Ava matters.”

“Yes.”

“Does Lily matter?”

Ethan nodded.

“If she is connected to the trust.”

“How?”

“Your daughter is the first female child of Daniel Whitmore.”

I stared at him.

“You know about Lily?”

“Everyone knows.”

“Who is everyone?”

“People who have been watching your family.”

I felt cold.

Ethan continued.

“The trust was designed so no single branch of the family could control it.”

“Then how did Richard try?”

“He needed another child.”

“Chloe's?”

“Yes.”

“And Lily?”

“Lily wasn't supposed to exist.”

The room became silent.

I remembered Victoria's message.

Your daughter was never supposed to exist.

I finally understood.

“My marriage.”

Ethan looked at me.

“What?”

“My marriage to Daniel.”

He nodded.

“It wasn't an accident.”

Daniel stood.

“You're saying my father arranged my marriage?”

Ethan looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To produce a child.”

Daniel's face went white.

“That isn't possible.”

“It is.”

“No.”

Ethan pulled out a document.

He placed it on the table.

It was a private family agreement.

Daniel's name was there.

My name was there.

Richard's signature.

And a date.

Five years before our wedding.

I stared at it.

The document described a future marriage.

Not romantic.

Not emotional.

Strategic.

The language made me feel sick.

Marriage between Daniel Whitmore and Jennifer Carter shall secure succession rights through a female heir.

I couldn't breathe.

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“You swear?”

“Yes.”

Ethan looked at him.

“I believe you.”

I turned toward Ethan.

“Then why did they choose me?”

He looked at me.

“Because your mother was connected to the trust.”

My heart stopped.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“What did she have to do with it?”

Ethan hesitated.

“She was one of the original beneficiaries.”

I sat down.

My mother had never mentioned this.

Not once.

Rachel immediately started taking photographs of the document.

“Where did you get this?”

“My father kept it.”

“Why didn't you show it to anyone?”

“Because the moment I did, my mother would know I was alive.”

Rachel nodded.

“That's why you disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“Who helped you?”

Ethan looked away.

“Someone inside the Whitmore family.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Daniel spoke.

“Someone helped you?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“A woman.”

“Name?”

Ethan shook his head.

“She never told me.”

“Where is she now?”

“Dead.”

Silence.

“Who killed her?”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Your father.”

Daniel sat down.

He looked sick.

“My father killed someone?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she found the trust records.”

Rachel asked:

“What records?”

Ethan smiled sadly.

“The real ones.”

He opened another folder.

Inside were pages of financial statements.

Trust distributions.

Hidden companies.

Offshore accounts.

Political donations.

Property purchases.

Everything led back to one central entity.

Blackridge Consulting.

I stared.

“The company.”

Ethan nodded.

“It's not a consulting company.”

“What is it?”

“A collection point.”

“For what?”

“Money.”

“Whose?”

“Everyone's.”

I didn't understand.

Ethan explained.

“Richard used Blackridge to move money out of the family businesses.”

“Why?”

“To build his own private fund.”

“How much?”

“More than $400 million.”

My mouth went dry.

Rachel stared at the documents.

“This could destroy the entire family.”

Ethan nodded.

“That is why they want me dead.”

I looked at Chloe.

“And you?”

She shook her head.

“I never knew about the money.”

“But you knew Victoria wanted Ava.”

“Yes.”

“Did she ever tell you why?”

Chloe hesitated.

“She said Ava was insurance.”

“Insurance against what?”

“She didn't say.”

Ethan's expression darkened.

“Against me.”

Chloe looked at him.

“What?”

“If I'm alive, I can claim the trust.”

Ethan looked at Ava.

“But if my daughter is also alive…”

He stopped.

Rachel finished:

“Then the trust becomes even harder to control.”

Ethan nodded.

“And if Lily is also a beneficiary…”

I felt cold.

“Then Victoria needs all three of us controlled.”

“Exactly.”

Suddenly, a car engine roared outside.

Everyone froze.

Ethan moved toward the window.

He looked down.

His face changed.

“Get away from the window.”

“Why?”

“Now.”

We moved.

A black sedan stopped outside.

Two men stepped out.

Rachel grabbed her phone.

“Police?”

Ethan shook his head.

“They won't arrive in time.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What do we do?”

Ethan opened a hidden cabinet.

Inside were documents and a handgun.

I stepped back.

“Daniel.”

“I've got it.”

“No.”

Ethan looked at me.

“They're not here to hurt you.”

He looked at Lily.

“They're here for the babies.”

My heart stopped.

I grabbed Lily.

Chloe held Ava.

The back door opened.

We ran down the stairs.

Ethan led us through the garage.

There was another exit behind a stack of tires.

We rushed outside.

A car was waiting.

“Get in.”

We climbed inside.

Ethan drove.

Behind us, the two men ran into the garage.

A shot cracked through the air.

Chloe screamed.

I held Lily against my chest.

Daniel turned around.

“Are they following us?”

Ethan accelerated.

“Yes.”

We drove for twenty minutes.

Then Ethan pulled into an abandoned warehouse.

He turned off the engine.

Everyone sat in silence.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“Who were they?”

“Victoria's men.”

“How did they find us?”

Ethan looked at Chloe.

“She knows.”

“Knows what?”

“Where I am.”

Chloe shook her head.

“I didn't tell her.”

“I know.”

“Then how?”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Your phone.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“It's compromised.”

Rachel took his phone.

She examined it.

“Do not touch it.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Why?”

“Someone installed tracking software.”

He stared at her.

“When?”

“I don't know.”

Ethan looked at me.

“Your phone too?”

Rachel checked mine.

Then stopped.

My heart sank.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“Your phone is clean.”

I exhaled.

Then Ethan's expression changed.

“Then they weren't tracking you.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“They knew exactly where we were because someone told them.”

Everyone looked at Chloe.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Then who?”

Daniel didn't answer.

I watched his face.

Then I remembered something.

The man at the hotel.

The black SUV.

Victoria.

Richard.

And the person who had entered the ballroom.

I whispered:

“Someone inside our family.”

Ethan nodded.

“Exactly.”

That night, we stayed in a safe house.

Nobody slept.

At four in the morning, Rachel received an email.

No sender.

One attachment.

A photograph.

All of us.

Standing outside Ethan's garage.

Taken from across the street.

The timestamp was only twenty minutes old.

Underneath it was one sentence:

You found the wrong man.

Rachel opened another message.

Ethan is not the one you should fear.

Then another.

Ask Chloe who the real father of Ava is.

Everyone turned toward Chloe.

She went pale.

Ethan stared at her.

“You told me I was her father.”

“I never said that.”

“You said she was mine.”

“I said you were the only man who had the right to protect her.”

Ethan's face changed.

“What does that mean?”

Chloe began crying.

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

She looked at me.

Then Daniel.

Then Ethan.

Finally she whispered:

“I lied.”

Silence.

“Ava's biological father isn't Ethan.”

Ethan stepped back.

“Then who?”

Chloe covered her face.

“I don't know.”

Rachel frowned.

“You don't know?”

“No.”

“Then why did you tell everyone it was Ethan?”

“Because Victoria told me to.”

I felt cold.

“Why would she do that?”

Chloe looked at me.

“Because if everyone believed Ethan was the father…”

She stopped.

“Then nobody would look for the real one.”

Daniel whispered:

“Who is the real father?”

Chloe looked toward the sleeping baby.

“I don't know his name.”

“Then what do you know?”

She swallowed.

“I know he works for Blackridge.”

Rachel's face went pale.

“And I know…”

Chloe's voice broke.

“…he is the person who has been moving Daniel's money.”

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

He stared back at me.

The missing $80,000.

The anonymous messages.

The black SUV.

Victoria.

Blackridge.

The baby.

Everything suddenly connected.

But then Chloe said something that made the entire room freeze.

“He isn't just moving Daniel's money.”

She looked at me.

“He's been paying for Lily.”

I frowned.

“What?”

Chloe whispered:

“Someone has been paying every medical bill for your daughter since before she was born.”

I stared at her.

“That isn't possible.”

“It is.”

“Who?”

Chloe shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Then Ethan spoke.

“I do.”

Everyone turned toward him.

He looked at me.

“The man behind Chloe isn't Victoria.”

He paused.

“And he isn't Richard.”

His eyes moved to Daniel.

“He's someone much closer to you.”

Daniel's face went white.

“Who?”

Ethan looked at him.

May you like

Then said:

“Your own brother.”
