Chapter 12 — The Woman Who Told the Truth

Chapter 12 — The Woman Who Told the Truth

I did not go to the church alone.

That was the first mistake Daniel had taught me never to make again.

Laura arranged for an investigator to follow at a distance, while she remained in contact with me by phone. I didn't tell Daniel where I was going. I didn't tell my mother. And I certainly didn't tell Chloe.

The church stood at the edge of a nearly abandoned neighborhood.

It was small.

Old.

The paint on the wooden doors had begun to peel, and weeds had pushed through cracks in the stone walkway.

There were no cars in the parking lot.

No lights in the windows.

For a moment, I wondered if the message had been a trap after all.

Then the church door opened.

A woman stepped outside.

I stopped walking.

Even from twenty feet away, I knew her.

Evelyn.

She looked older than she had in the photographs.

Her dark hair was shorter.

Her face thinner.

But her eyes were unmistakable.

She looked at me for several seconds.

Then she whispered:

“Jennifer.”

I walked toward her.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why did everyone say you disappeared?”

“Because that's what I needed them to believe.”

“Who?”

She looked over her shoulder.

“Daniel.”

I stopped.

“You were afraid of him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I knew what he had done.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“What did he do?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“Your father was right.”

We went inside.

The church smelled of dust and old wood.

Sunlight came through narrow stained-glass windows and fell across empty pews.

Evelyn sat in the first row.

I remained standing.

“You have ten minutes.”

She looked at me.

“Your father once gave me three hours.”

“What?”

“To tell him the truth.”

“When?”

“Six years ago.”

My heart began pounding.

“What happened?”

“He found me.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel had lied to him.”

“About what?”

“About everything.”

She looked down at her hands.

“I met Daniel when we were young. I believed he loved me.”

“You were his girlfriend.”

“Yes.”

“Before me.”

“Yes.”

“And Rebecca?”

Evelyn nodded.

“She was born before Daniel met you.”

My throat tightened.

“Is she his daughter?”

Evelyn looked directly into my eyes.

“No.”

I exhaled.

“My father knew.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Daniel believe she might be his?”

“Because I let him.”

“Why?”

“Because I was terrified.”

“Of Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She took a slow breath.

“Because Daniel wasn't the only dangerous person in that family.”

I sat beside her.

“Tell me everything.”

She looked toward the altar.

“Daniel came from a family that valued appearances more than truth.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You don't know how deep it goes.”

I waited.

“His uncle Richard controlled the family's private financial network.”

“Blackstone.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel worked for him.”

“Eventually.”

“What did Richard do?”

“He moved money.”

“How?”

“Through shell companies. Private trusts. Offshore accounts. Property transfers.”

My stomach tightened.

“And my father discovered it.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Years before you met Daniel.”

“Then why did Dad allow Daniel into my life?”

“He didn't.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“Your father tried to stop him.”

“But Daniel married me.”

“Because your father died.”

Silence.

I stared at her.

“You're saying Dad's death changed everything.”

“Yes.”

“What happened before he died?”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“Your father was going to expose Richard.”

The investigator's words came back to me.

Richard Carter was supposedly dead.

Yet Evelyn was telling me he had been at the center of everything.

“What happened to Richard?”

“He disappeared.”

“Did he die?”

“No.”

“Where is he?”

“I don't know.”

I stared at her.

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

“Then why did Daniel tell me Richard was alive?”

“Because Daniel knows more than he admits.”

“What does he know?”

“That Richard has been watching him.”

A chill moved through me.

“Watching him?”

“For years.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel took something from him.”

“What?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“Control.”

I frowned.

“Control of what?”

“Blackstone.”

My heart began pounding.

“Daniel took it?”

“Not exactly.”

She lowered her voice.

“Your father did.”

I couldn't understand.

“My father controlled Blackstone?”

“After he discovered what Richard was doing.”

“Then why was Daniel involved?”

“Because Richard needed someone inside your father's company.”

“And Daniel volunteered?”

“He was recruited.”

“By Richard?”

“Yes.”

My stomach turned.

“So Daniel entered my father's life intentionally.”

“Yes.”

“He didn't just meet me.”

“No.”

“He was sent to get close to me.”

Evelyn nodded.

I felt something inside me break.

The memories came rushing back.

Daniel meeting me at the charity event.

His perfect manners.

His interest in my father's business.

His questions about the trust.

The way he had somehow known exactly what to say.

I had called it chemistry.

It had been strategy.

I whispered:

“My marriage was planned.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Not entirely.”

“What does that mean?”

“Daniel fell in love with you.”

I laughed bitterly.

“After all this?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he betray me?”

“Because he was never strong enough to choose you over the life he had built.”

I looked away.

“That doesn't make it better.”

“I know.”

Evelyn reached into her handbag.

She pulled out a small recorder.

“This is why I contacted you.”

I stared at it.

“What is it?”

“Your father.”

My heart stopped.

“You recorded him?”

“No.”

She placed it on the pew.

“He recorded me.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because he knew I was afraid.”

She pressed the button.

Static filled the church.

Then my father's voice.

Calm.

Firm.

“Evelyn, if you're telling me the truth, you need to understand that Daniel is not the person controlling this.”

Evelyn's younger voice answered.

“Then who is?”

A pause.

“Richard.”

The recording continued.

“He has been using Daniel for years.”

My father's voice became quieter.

“And now he's using you.”

Evelyn began crying.

“What does he want?”

“Access to Jennifer.”

My heart stopped.

The recording ended.

I looked at Evelyn.

“Why me?”

“Because of the trust.”

“My inheritance.”

“Yes.”

“Richard wanted it?”

“He wanted control over the assets your father had moved into the trust.”

“Why?”

“Because your father had taken billions of dollars of influence away from him.”

I stared at her.

“Billions?”

She nodded.

“Richard's network was much larger than your father ever told you.”

“And Daniel?”

“Daniel was supposed to restore it.”

I felt sick.

“And instead?”

“He fell in love with you.”

I looked at her.

“And you?”

She lowered her eyes.

“I was supposed to help him.”

“Help him do what?”

“Convince your father that Daniel was trustworthy.”

I swallowed.

“But you didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I saw what Richard was capable of.”

“What did he do?”

Evelyn's face changed.

“He killed someone.”

I froze.

“Who?”

“My brother.”

Silence.

I couldn't breathe.

“Why?”

“He found the financial records.”

“Your brother worked for my father.”

“Yes.”

“He discovered Blackstone.”

“Yes.”

“And Richard killed him?”

“I believe so.”

“Did you see it?”

“No.”

“Then how do you know?”

“Because the night he died, Richard called me.”

“What did he say?”

“He said, 'Your brother won't be a problem anymore.'”

I felt cold.

“That isn't proof.”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“But then I found his phone.”

“What was on it?”

“A recording.”

“Of Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Do you still have it?”

“I did.”

“Where is it?”

She hesitated.

“Daniel has it.”

I closed my eyes.

“Of course he does.”

Then Evelyn told me the part I wasn't prepared for.

“Your father wasn't the only person Richard wanted removed.”

“Who else?”

“You.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because your father had created a contingency.”

“What contingency?”

“If anything happened to him, control of the protected assets would eventually pass to you.”

I understood.

“My father was trying to make sure Richard couldn't get them.”

“Yes.”

“And Daniel was supposed to get close to me so he could control them.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't he?”

“Because your father had already protected you.”

“With the trust.”

“With the trust, the companies, the accounts, and something else.”

“What?”

“A voting agreement.”

I frowned.

“What voting agreement?”

“Your father transferred controlling voting rights to you.”

My heart raced.

“I never knew.”

“You weren't supposed to.”

“Why?”

“Because the agreement only activated under specific circumstances.”

“What circumstances?”

“Fraudulent interference by a spouse.”

I stared at her.

“Daniel triggered it.”

“Yes.”

“So I control the company now.”

“More than that.”

She looked at me.

“You control the network.”

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Everything Daniel had been trying to take from me had already become mine.

Not because I had fought him.

Because my father had anticipated him.

Then I remembered the letter.

If you choose deception, I will protect Jennifer from you.

My father had known.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

I looked at Evelyn.

“Why are you telling me this now?”

“Because I was tired of running.”

“From Richard?”

“From all of them.”

“You left Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“You disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“You left Rebecca.”

Her face broke.

“I never wanted to.”

“Then why?”

“Because Richard threatened her.”

I stared at her.

“He knew where she was?”

“Yes.”

“Where is she now?”

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“I can't tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because she doesn't know who her father might be.”

I frowned.

“But you said Daniel isn't her father.”

“He isn't.”

“Then who is?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“Your father's lawyer.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Rebecca is the daughter of a man your father trusted more than anyone.”

I couldn't breathe.

“Who?”

“Thomas Vale.”

My father's name.

My surname.

My family name.

I stared at her.

“That's impossible.”

“No.”

“My father?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

“His younger brother.”

I felt dizzy.

“My father had a brother?”

“Yes.”

“I never knew.”

“He died before you were born.”

“What was his name?”

Evelyn whispered:

“Samuel Vale.”

The world seemed to tilt.

Another hidden relative.

Another secret.

Another person my father had kept from me.

I stood.

“This doesn't make sense.”

“It will.”

“When?”

“When you find the evidence.”

“Where?”

“Your father's old office.”

I remembered the photograph.

The locked cabinet.

The folders.

I looked at her.

“What is inside?”

“Everything.”

“Everything?”

“Richard's transactions.”

“Daniel's involvement.”

“Rebecca's birth records.”

“And your father's final evidence.”

My pulse raced.

“Why didn't you tell me before?”

“Because I needed to know whether I could trust you.”

I almost laughed.

“After everything?”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

“Now I know.”

She stood.

I looked at her.

“Evelyn.”

“Yes?”

“Did Daniel love me?”

She stared at me for a long moment.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt more than if she'd said no.

“Then why?”

“Because love wasn't enough.”

I looked away.

She continued.

“He wanted the life you represented.”

“That isn't love.”

“Maybe not.”

She took a breath.

“But there were moments when I watched him with you.”

“What moments?”

“He looked happy.”

I closed my eyes.

“Don't.”

“He really did.”

“Please.”

“He loved Lily.”

I turned toward her.

“Then why did he calculate her worth before she was born?”

Evelyn had no answer.

Neither did I.

When I left the church, Laura was waiting in the car.

She looked at me.

“Well?”

I got inside.

“Evelyn is alive.”

“I know.”

“She told me everything.”

“Everything?”

“Almost.”

I handed Laura the recorder.

She listened.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

“Your father's voice is on this.”

“I know.”

She replayed it.

Then she looked at me.

“Jennifer.”

“What?”

“The voice identification may be useful.”

“For what?”

“If we can authenticate the recording, it could establish your father's knowledge of Richard's activities.”

I nodded.

“There's more.”

I told her about the voting agreement.

Her eyes widened.

“Do you understand what that means?”

“Yes.”

“Do you?”

“I think so.”

“You may have controlling authority over the entire structure.”

I looked out the window.

For months, I had been fighting Daniel.

Now I realized Daniel might not have been the final enemy.

He had been one of the doors.

And someone else had been standing behind him.

That evening, I returned home.

Daniel was waiting.

He looked exhausted.

“Where were you?”

I didn't answer.

“You went to the church.”

I stopped.

“How do you know?”

“Because I know Evelyn.”

I looked at him.

“She told me the truth.”

His face went pale.

“What did she tell you?”

“That you were recruited.”

He swallowed.

“Jennifer—”

“That you were supposed to get close to my family.”

He said nothing.

“That my father knew.”

Silence.

“That Richard is alive.”

His eyes widened.

“You know?”

“Yes.”

He sat down.

I watched him.

“You were never the mastermind.”

He looked at me.

“No.”

“You were a pawn.”

His face tightened.

“I wasn't a pawn.”

“You were.”

“I made choices.”

“Yes.”

“You're right.”

I stepped closer.

“Then make another one.”

“What?”

“Tell me where Richard is.”

He looked away.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“He'll kill you.”

I stared at him.

“You've been saying that for years.”

“I mean it.”

“Where is he?”

Daniel looked at me.

Then whispered:

“He's been watching you.”

My heart stopped.

“How long?”

“Since your father died.”

I felt cold.

“Where?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Everywhere.”

I stood frozen.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then a man's voice.

Old.

Calm.

Controlled.

“Jennifer.”

I couldn't breathe.

“Who is this?”

“You know who.”

My heart pounded.

“Richard?”

A quiet laugh.

“You've been looking for me.”

I said nothing.

“I've been looking at you.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Why?”

“Because your father left you something.”

“What?”

“A choice.”

“What choice?”

“Become like him.”

I swallowed.

“Or become like me.”

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel stood behind me.

“Was that him?”

I turned.

“Yes.”

Daniel's face drained of color.

“What did he say?”

I looked at him.

“He said my father left me a choice.”

Daniel whispered:

“He's coming.”

I didn't answer.

Because somewhere beneath the fear, something had changed.

For the first time, I wasn't running from the truth.

I was ready to face it.

And when I opened my father's old files that night, I found a final document hidden beneath the folder marked BLACKSTONE.

It contained only one sentence.

If Richard ever contacts Jennifer directly, give her the truth about the woman who told the truth.

Beneath it was my father's signature.

And beneath that—

a name I had never seen before.

Rebecca Samuel.

The woman everyone had been searching for had never been missing.

May you like

She had been hidden.

And now I knew why.
