Chapter 2 — The Woman Behind the Messages

Chapter 2 — The Woman Behind the Messages

I had barely made it to the hotel lobby when I heard someone call my name.

“Jennifer!”

I stopped.

My mother was standing near the elevators with Lily in her arms.

She looked frightened.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Frightened.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

I nodded.

“I will be.”

She looked past me toward the ballroom.

“What happened?”

I took a breath.

“Daniel's affair is no longer a secret.”

Her eyes widened.

“You told everyone?”

“I had to.”

She studied my face.

Then she noticed the folder in my hand.

“Is there more?”

I looked at it.

“There always seems to be.”

My mother stepped closer.

“Jennifer, whatever happens next, you don't have to face it alone.”

I almost cried.

Those were the first words anyone had said to me that night that didn't come with an accusation.

I reached for Lily.

My mother carefully handed her to me.

My daughter stirred against my chest.

I kissed the top of her head.

“Let's go home.”

But before we could reach the entrance, the ballroom doors opened behind us.

Daniel came running out.

“Jennifer!”

I kept walking.

“Please!”

I stopped.

Slowly, I turned.

He was standing several feet away, his tie loosened, his face exhausted.

His parents were behind him.

“Don't leave like this.”

I looked at him.

“You wanted a perfect baptism.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“You're my wife.”

“And you're the father of my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“But you stopped being my husband a long time ago.”

He flinched.

“I made mistakes.”

“Daniel.”

I shook my head.

“Stop calling them mistakes.”

He stared at me.

“You made choices.”

Then I walked away.

I thought that was the end of the night.

I was wrong.

The hotel doors opened.

A woman stood outside.

She was holding a baby carrier.

She was wearing a cream-colored coat, dark jeans, and a scarf wrapped tightly around her neck.

She looked exhausted.

Her eyes were red.

But the moment she saw Daniel, her face changed.

“Daniel?”

He froze.

I did too.

My mother looked between us.

“Who is that?”

The woman stepped inside.

“I came because you told me to.”

Daniel's face lost what little color remained.

“Chloe…”

My stomach tightened.

So this was her.

The woman behind the messages.

The woman who had received my husband's money.

The woman who had known where he was when I was pregnant.

The woman he had promised a future.

She looked at me.

Then at Lily.

Her eyes widened.

“Is that your baby?”

I didn't answer.

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Why are you here?”

Her expression changed.

“You told me to come.”

“I didn't.”

“You texted me this afternoon.”

She pulled out her phone.

“I have the message.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

Then at me.

I said nothing.

Chloe looked confused.

“What is going on?”

Daniel grabbed her arm.

“Come outside.”

She pulled away.

“No.”

Her voice suddenly hardened.

“You promised me you weren't going to hide me anymore.”

I watched him carefully.

He looked terrified.

Not because of me.

Because of her.

“Chloe,” he whispered.

“You said tonight was going to be the night.”

I frowned.

“The night for what?”

Chloe looked at me.

Then back at Daniel.

“You didn't tell her?”

Nobody spoke.

She laughed bitterly.

“Of course you didn't.”

My mother stepped closer.

“Who are you?”

Chloe's eyes filled with tears.

“I'm Chloe.”

She swallowed.

“And Daniel is the father of my baby.”

The lobby went silent.

My mother looked at me.

I looked at Daniel.

He closed his eyes.

There it was.

The truth.

Not a rumor.

Not an assumption.

Not a message taken out of context.

A woman had walked into the hotel carrying a baby and publicly identified my husband as the father.

Daniel moved toward Chloe.

“You need to leave.”

She stared at him.

“Leave?”

“Yes.”

“You told me you'd tell her.”

“I said we'd talk.”

“You said after the baptism.”

He looked toward me.

Chloe followed his gaze.

“You never planned to tell her, did you?”

Daniel said nothing.

Chloe laughed.

“You promised me.”

I stepped forward.

“Chloe.”

She looked at me.

I kept my voice calm.

“How long?”

She hesitated.

“How long have you been with him?”

“Almost a year.”

My chest tightened.

“Almost a year?”

She nodded.

“He told me you two were separated.”

I looked at Daniel.

“We weren't.”

“I know that now.”

“When did you find out?”

“Three months ago.”

My eyes narrowed.

“You knew I was pregnant?”

Chloe looked down.

“Yes.”

“And you continued seeing him?”

She swallowed.

“Yes.”

I nodded slowly.

At least she didn't lie.

“Did he tell you he loved you?”

She gave a bitter smile.

“Every day.”

My stomach twisted.

“What else did he promise?”

Chloe looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“A house.”

I said nothing.

“A future.”

Nothing.

“He told me he'd divorce you after the baby was born.”

Daniel immediately interrupted.

“That wasn't—”

“Don't.”

Chloe turned toward him.

“You told me that.”

“I was confused.”

“You told me I was the woman you were supposed to marry.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Chloe, enough.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“You don't get to do this anymore.”

She turned toward me.

“I believed him.”

I stared at her.

“So did I.”

The two of us stood there.

Two women.

One man.

Two completely different lies.

And for the first time, I understood something.

Daniel hadn't just betrayed me.

He had built an entire second life.

“Where is the baby?” I asked.

Chloe looked toward the carrier.

“She’s outside.”

“Why?”

“I didn't want to bring her into the party.”

I nodded.

“That was probably wise.”

She looked ashamed.

“I didn't know what was happening.”

“You knew he was married.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I was pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“And you still stayed.”

Tears ran down her cheeks.

“Yes.”

I looked away.

Part of me wanted to hate her.

It would have been easier.

But hatred wasn't what I felt.

I felt tired.

Because I knew what it was like to believe Daniel.

I knew how convincing he could be.

How easily he could make a lie sound like concern.

How naturally he could say exactly what someone wanted to hear.

That didn't excuse her.

But it explained something.

Daniel had told each of us a different story.

My mother spoke.

“Jennifer, let's go.”

I nodded.

But before I could move, Chloe said:

“There is something you need to see.”

I stopped.

She opened her phone.

“I have copies of his messages.”

“I already have them.”

“Not these.”

She scrolled.

“Daniel deleted these from his account.”

My heart started pounding.

“What messages?”

Chloe handed me the phone.

The first message was from Daniel.

Once Lily is born, she'll be too exhausted to fight me.

My blood went cold.

The next:

I'll convince her the divorce was her idea.

Then:

Her salary is stable. If I can keep control of the joint account, I'll be fine.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

There were more.

Chloe doesn't need to know about the money yet.

Jennifer won't notice the transfers.

The baptism will make everything look normal.

I stopped scrolling.

I looked at Daniel.

“You planned this.”

He didn't answer.

“You planned the baptism.”

“I wanted to celebrate Lily.”

“No.”

I held up the phone.

“You planned the baptism to make your life look perfect.”

He shook his head.

“That's not what happened.”

“Then explain it.”

He couldn't.

My mother took the phone from me.

She read the messages.

Her expression became furious.

“You were going to manipulate her?”

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom…”

“You were going to make my daughter think she wanted the divorce?”

“I didn't mean it like that.”

“You wrote it.”

He looked away.

Chloe suddenly said:

“There’s more.”

Daniel's head snapped toward her.

“Don't.”

She looked at him.

“You don't get to threaten me anymore.”

“I never threatened you.”

“You did.”

She looked at me.

“He told me if I ever contacted you, he'd make sure I never saw his daughter again.”

I stared at Daniel.

“Is that true?”

He shook his head.

“I was angry.”

“You threatened her?”

“I was trying to protect my family.”

I laughed.

“Which family?”

He had no answer.

My phone began ringing.

Unknown number.

I ignored it.

It rang again.

Then again.

Finally, I answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice said:

“Mrs. Carter?”

“Yes.”

“This is the hotel manager.”

I glanced toward the ballroom.

“Yes?”

“Your husband has refused the remaining balance.”

I looked at Daniel.

“What?”

“He says the charges should be billed to you.”

My eyes widened.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“I never said that.”

The manager continued.

“He also says you were responsible for the reservation.”

I looked at him.

“Put him on speaker.”

The manager hesitated.

Then Daniel's voice came through.

“Jennifer, this is ridiculous.”

I stared at him.

“You told them to bill me?”

“I didn't.”

The manager spoke.

“You told me she would handle it.”

Daniel looked horrified.

“That's not what I said.”

I smiled.

“Actually, it is.”

I looked at the manager.

“Please charge the balance to Daniel Carter.”

Daniel stared at me.

“Jennifer!”

“Good night.”

I ended the call.

Chloe looked at me.

“You really aren't going to pay?”

“No.”

She almost smiled.

“Good.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because he told me he paid for everything.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“He told you that?”

“Yes.”

I laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the absurdity had finally become too much.

He had lied to both of us about money.

To me, he was struggling.

To her, he was generous.

To everyone else, he was successful.

The truth was somewhere in between.

He had been stealing from one life to finance another.

Daniel's father finally spoke.

“Daniel.”

His voice was quiet.

“How much money have you spent on Chloe?”

Daniel stared at the floor.

Robert repeated:

“How much?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Margaret looked at Chloe.

“Do you know?”

Chloe nodded.

“Some of it.”

“How much?”

“About fifteen thousand.”

Margaret sat down.

Robert closed his eyes.

I watched them.

Then I said:

“That's only what I know about.”

Everyone looked at me.

Daniel's face changed.

“What do you mean?”

I opened my folder again.

“There are other transfers.”

His eyes widened.

“Jennifer…”

“More than twenty-five thousand dollars.”

His father stood.

“Twenty-five?”

I nodded.

“Possibly more.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

I pulled out another statement.

“Look.”

He stared at it.

Then at me.

“How did you get that?”

“I'm your wife.”

He swallowed.

“You accessed my account?”

“No.”

I smiled.

“I didn't need to.”

I tapped the paper.

“The bank provided it.”

His expression changed.

“You contacted the bank?”

“After I hired my attorney.”

His father looked at him.

“You hired an attorney?”

Daniel looked away.

Robert's voice hardened.

“When?”

“Four months ago.”

The silence that followed was almost unbearable.

Then Robert looked at me.

“What happens now?”

I closed the folder.

“I leave.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Jennifer.”

I stepped closer.

“I don't want revenge.”

He stared at me.

“I want peace.”

“I can give you that.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You've already given me enough.”

Chloe approached me.

“Jennifer.”

I looked at her.

“I know you hate me.”

“I don't.”

She looked surprised.

“I should.”

“You hurt me.”

“I know.”

“But Daniel made choices.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

I looked at the baby carrier outside.

“Take care of your daughter.”

Chloe's eyes filled with tears.

“I will.”

“And don't let him convince you that you're responsible for what he did.”

She nodded.

Then she whispered:

“He's going to try to destroy you.”

“I know.”

“He already told me how.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He said if you found out, he would make you look unstable.”

I stared at her.

“He has recordings.”

My stomach dropped.

“What kind?”

“Arguments.”

“Between us?”

“Yes.”

“He recorded me?”

She nodded.

“He said he'd use them in court.”

For the first time that night, I felt something close to fear.

Not because Daniel could hurt me emotionally.

That part of me was already broken.

But because Lily was involved.

I looked at my daughter.

Then at Chloe.

“Anything else?”

Chloe hesitated.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“He has been planning this for months.”

I waited.

“He didn't start planning the divorce after you found out.”

She swallowed.

“He started planning it before Lily was born.”

I closed my eyes.

Four months of evidence.

Four months of pretending.

Four months of thinking I was preparing to leave a cheating husband.

Now I realized something much worse.

Daniel had been preparing for me to leave him.

And he had been preparing to make sure I lost everything when I did.

I looked toward the ballroom.

Daniel was standing alone.

His parents had walked away from him.

His perfect celebration was over.

But his plan wasn't.

Not yet.

I tightened my grip on the folder.

Then I looked at Chloe.

“Thank you for telling me.”

She nodded.

I turned toward the hotel doors.

My mother followed.

Lily slept peacefully in my arms.

And for the first time that night, I understood the real battle ahead.

The affair wasn't the end of my marriage.

It was only the beginning of the war.

Because Daniel hadn't just cheated on me.

May you like

He had been preparing to fight me.

And tomorrow morning, I was going to find out exactly how far he was willing to go.
