Chapter 2 – The Executive Boardroom

Chapter 2 – The Executive Boardroom

The elevator doors closed with a whisper.

Mara Ashford watched the numbers climb toward the executive floor without changing her expression.

Behind her, the marble lobby resumed its rhythm. Guests checked in. Suitcases rolled across polished stone. The orchestra in the lounge began another jazz standard.

No one looking up would have guessed that the woman in a gray cardigan and inexpensive sneakers owned sixty-two percent of the Ashford Hospitality Group.

She preferred it that way.

The doors opened onto the forty-second floor.

Unlike the glitter below, this hallway was quiet.

No chandeliers.

No music.

Only brushed walnut walls and frosted glass doors bearing a discreet silver logo.

Ashford Hospitality.

At the end of the corridor, twelve executives were already waiting.

The moment Mara entered, every person stood.

"Good evening, Madam Chair."

She acknowledged them with a small nod.

"Please sit."

No one touched the refreshments.

No one checked a phone.

They all knew the emergency meeting had been called for one reason.

Someone had misused company assets.

Chief Financial Officer Daniel Pierce slid a thick folder across the table.

"We completed the preliminary review."

Mara opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Private jet manifests.

Hotel invoices.

Luxury restaurant receipts.

Designer jewelry purchases.

Each expense had one thing in common.

They had all been charged to a corporate account authorized by Regional Vice President Ryan Carter.

Daniel spoke carefully.

"The transactions began six months ago."

Mara turned another page.

There was Ryan.

Laughing beside a woman who wasn't his wife.

Champagne.

Private yachts.

Five-star spas.

Every photograph carried an invisible price tag.

Corporate money.

Company shareholders.

Employee bonuses.

Used to finance an affair.

General Counsel Amelia Brooks folded her hands.

"The legal exposure is significant."

Mara remained silent.

"Has he altered financial records?"

Daniel nodded.

"Several."

"Has he approved false reimbursements?"

"Yes."

"Any accomplices?"

"We believe two."

The room grew even quieter.

Mara closed the folder.

"No leaks."

Amelia understood immediately.

"You want this contained."

"I want the truth."

At that same moment, twenty floors below, Ryan Carter ordered another bottle of vintage champagne.

His companion laughed as the waiter filled crystal glasses.

"Tonight feels expensive."

Ryan grinned.

"It should."

He had no idea the credit card authorizing the purchase had already been frozen.

The payment simply hadn't reached the bank yet.

Back upstairs, Mara stood before the panoramic windows overlooking Las Vegas.

Thousands of lights glittered across the Strip.

People often believed wealth was measured in penthouses and sports cars.

Her father had taught her differently.

"Wealth," he used to say, "is the ability to sleep peacefully because your conscience is clean."

She had never forgotten.

Daniel broke the silence.

"There is another matter."

He pressed a remote.

A surveillance video appeared on the conference screen.

The hotel lobby.

Ryan.

His companion.

And Mara.

The room watched in stunned silence as the woman tossed a five-dollar bill onto the marble floor.

Several executives visibly stiffened.

Amelia whispered,

"She assaulted the Chair."

Mara corrected her.

"No."

"She revealed herself."

The video continued.

Ryan stood without defending his wife.

Without objecting.

Without even asking for basic decency.

When the footage ended, no one spoke.

Finally, Daniel asked quietly,

"What are your instructions?"

Mara smiled.

A calm, unreadable smile.

"Do nothing."

Confused looks circled the room.

She continued,

"If people insist on writing their own confession..."

"...never interrupt."

She turned toward the Chief of Security.

"Are the recordings secure?"

"Three backups."

"Off-site?"

"Already encrypted."

"Good."

The legal department exchanged satisfied glances.

Every insult.

Every lie.

Every misuse of company property.

Documented.

Time-stamped.

Impossible to deny.

Mara picked up the folded five-dollar bill from her cardigan pocket and placed it gently on the conference table.

The executives looked at it curiously.

"Do you know why I kept this?"

No one answered.

"Because tomorrow..."

She tapped the bill once.

"...it becomes Exhibit A."

Outside, the lights of Las Vegas shimmered with endless promises.

Inside the executive boardroom, another promise had just been made.

Not one of revenge.

One of accountability.

Ryan Carter still believed he was spending the most glamorous night of his life.

He had no idea that before sunrise, every company account under his authority would be suspended.

Every email archived.

Every access badge deactivated.

And every door he once entered with confidence...

Would remain permanently closed.

By morning, the city would wake to another ordinary day.

May you like

For Ryan Carter...

It would be the first day of losing everything.
