Chapter 5 – Frozen Accounts

Chapter 5 – Frozen Accounts
Ryan Carter had always believed money solved problems.
Money bought time.
Money bought influence.
Money bought silence.
That belief lasted until 8:42 a.m. on a Thursday morning.
He stood outside an upscale boutique on the Las Vegas Strip, a shopping bag tucked beneath one arm as Sienna browsed the display window.
His phone vibrated.
A notification from his bank.
Corporate Account Suspended.
Ryan frowned.
He opened the banking application.
The balance was still visible.
The available funds were not.
Instead, a single line appeared beneath every business account.
Access Restricted Pending Internal Investigation.
He refreshed the page.
Nothing changed.
Again.
Still nothing.
A cold knot formed in his stomach.
"Everything okay?" Sienna asked.
Ryan forced a smile.
"Just a technical issue."
She shrugged.
"Call the bank."
"I will."
He already knew the bank wouldn't help.
Only one authority could freeze executive access that quickly.
The company's board.
At Ashford Hospitality Group headquarters, the atmosphere remained calm.
No reporters waited outside.
No emergency announcements echoed through the building.
Employees continued answering emails, attending meetings, and greeting guests.
Only the executive floor knew what had happened overnight.
Inside the Board Conference Room, Chairwoman Mara Ashford addressed the directors.
"No assumptions."
She looked around the table.
"No conclusions before evidence."
Every director nodded.
She continued.
"Our responsibility is not to destroy careers."
"It is to protect the company."
Chief Financial Officer Daniel Pierce connected his laptop to the main display.
"At 7:15 this morning, all purchasing privileges associated with Mr. Carter's executive profile were suspended."
A chart appeared.
Credit cards.
Travel accounts.
Vendor authorizations.
Expense approvals.
Everything had been locked simultaneously.
Independent Director Helen Morris studied the timeline.
"Could he move assets before the suspension?"
Daniel shook his head.
"The system executed automatically."
"Any attempts afterward?"
"Twenty-three."
Several board members exchanged surprised looks.
"He kept trying?"
Daniel nodded.
"Within the first forty minutes."
Across town, Ryan sat inside his luxury SUV.
He called the finance department.
Straight to voicemail.
He called Human Resources.
No answer.
He called three senior executives.
Every call went unanswered.
The silence frightened him more than confrontation would have.
Sienna finally broke the tension.
"You've been making calls for an hour."
Ryan gripped the steering wheel.
"They're avoiding me."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
But deep inside...
He already did.
Back at headquarters, the forensic audit continued.
Rows of accountants examined years of expense reports.
Digital specialists restored deleted emails.
Legal staff compared invoices with travel records.
The deeper they looked, the more inconsistencies they found.
Some were minor.
Others involved six-figure transfers routed through consulting firms with no identifiable employees.
Helen Morris closed another file.
"This isn't careless bookkeeping."
Daniel agreed.
"Someone understood exactly how to hide these transactions."
Mara listened without interrupting.
Finally, she asked one question.
"Have we found evidence that company funds were stolen?"
Daniel answered carefully.
"Not yet."
"Misused?"
"Yes."
"Hidden?"
"Almost certainly."
She nodded once.
"Then keep looking."
At noon, Ryan decided to visit headquarters despite his suspension.
The receptionist greeted him politely.
Then her expression changed when she scanned his identification.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Carter."
"Your building access has been temporarily disabled."
Ryan stared at her.
"I've worked here for eleven years."
"I understand."
"I have meetings."
She shook her head gently.
"I've been instructed to contact Security if you attempt to enter restricted areas."
For a long moment, neither moved.
Finally, Ryan stepped back.
"I'll leave."
The receptionist smiled with visible relief.
"Thank you."
He walked across the parking lot alone.
The executive entrance that had opened for him every weekday no longer recognized him.
The revolving door kept turning.
Without him.
That evening, the Board reconvened.
Daniel distributed another report.
"We've completed the first phase."
Mara looked up.
"Your assessment?"
Daniel took a slow breath.
"We believe the financial misconduct extends beyond one executive."
Silence settled over the room.
"How many?"
"We don't know."
"But enough to justify expanding the investigation company-wide."
Independent Director Helen Morris leaned forward.
"If this becomes public..."
"Our stock price could suffer."
Mara met her gaze.
"And if we ignore it?"
No one answered.
Integrity had a cost.
So did avoiding it.
Only one of those costs could be recovered.
As the meeting concluded, Mara remained alone in the boardroom.
She walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline.
Her father had built the company from a single roadside motel decades earlier.
He often repeated the same lesson.
"Buildings can be rebuilt."
"Reputations take generations."
She quietly repeated the words to herself.
Tomorrow, the investigation would widen.
More interviews.
More evidence.
More uncomfortable truths.
If innocent people had made mistakes, they would be treated fairly.
If guilty people had abused the trust placed in them, they would face the consequences.
Not because of revenge.
Because trust was the foundation of every successful enterprise.
Without it...
Even the tallest tower eventually collapsed.
As the lights of the city flickered beneath the evening sky, one truth became impossible to ignore.
The frozen accounts had never been the real punishment.
They were only the first crack in a much larger façade.

And somewhere behind carefully balanced ledgers and polished executive smiles...
Someone was beginning to realize that the safest secrets were no longer safe at all.
