Chapter 3 – The Audit Begins

Chapter 3 – The Audit Begins

At exactly 6:00 a.m., the lights on the thirty-eighth floor of Ashford Hospitality Group switched on.

The headquarters, usually quiet before sunrise, buzzed with unusual activity.

A team of forensic accountants wheeled locked aluminum cases through the lobby.

Cybersecurity specialists unpacked encrypted laptops.

Compliance officers clipped visitor badges to their jackets.

No announcements were made.

No emails were sent.

Yet everyone sensed that something extraordinary was unfolding.

Inside the Executive Operations Center, Mara Ashford stood before a wall of digital monitors displaying financial dashboards from every hotel in the company.

Daniel Pierce entered carrying a fresh report.

"They're here."

Mara nodded.

"Bring them in."

Five independent forensic auditors walked into the room.

They had been selected from different firms to ensure complete neutrality.

No one in the company had worked with them before.

No one owed anyone a favor.

The lead investigator, Dr. Helen Brooks, placed a sealed document on the conference table.

"Madam Chair."

"By your authorization, we are commencing a full forensic audit of Regional Division West."

Mara signed the authorization without hesitation.

"When does it begin?"

Helen looked at her watch.

"It already has."

Across the city, Ryan Carter woke in the Presidential Suite.

Sunlight streamed through floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Las Vegas Strip.

Beside him, his girlfriend, Sienna Hart, stretched lazily.

She smiled.

"Last night was perfect."

Ryan reached for his phone.

"I'll order breakfast."

He opened his banking app.

The screen flashed an unfamiliar message.

Transaction Declined. Contact Card Issuer.

He frowned.

"That's strange."

He tried another corporate card.

Declined.

A third.

Declined again.

Sienna laughed.

"Maybe your company finally noticed how much you spoil me."

Ryan forced a smile.

"It must be a banking error."

For the first time that morning, uncertainty crept into his voice.

Meanwhile, on the thirty-eighth floor, the audit team began imaging company servers.

Every email.

Every invoice.

Every reimbursement request.

Nothing would be altered.

Nothing would be deleted.

Each digital record was preserved exactly as it existed.

Daniel watched the progress.

"How long?"

Helen answered calmly.

"Finding evidence is easy."

"Understanding patterns takes longer."

She pointed to a monitor.

"But I already have questions."

One chart immediately stood out.

Over the previous seven months, entertainment expenses had increased by nearly four hundred percent.

Luxury travel.

Private dining.

Exclusive clubs.

Designer boutiques.

Individually, each transaction appeared ordinary.

Together...

They formed a pattern impossible to ignore.

Helen circled the report.

"This isn't random spending."

"It's systematic."

At 8:15 a.m., Ryan arrived at the regional office.

His access badge beeped red.

He tried again.

Nothing.

The security guard looked apologetic.

"I'm sorry, sir."

"Your credentials have been temporarily suspended."

Ryan frowned.

"By whose authority?"

Before the guard could answer, Human Resources Director Linda Morris stepped into the lobby.

"Mr. Carter."

"We've been expecting you."

She gestured toward a private meeting room.

"If you'd come with me."

Ryan felt dozens of employees watching.

Whispers spread across the office.

He had entered the building as an executive.

For the first time, he wondered whether he would leave unemployed.

Inside the meeting room sat three unfamiliar faces.

Dr. Helen Brooks.

Daniel Pierce.

General Counsel Amelia Brooks.

Ryan attempted a confident smile.

"What's going on?"

Daniel slid a thin folder across the table.

"We're conducting a routine financial review."

Ryan relaxed slightly.

"I approve dozens of expenses every week."

"I'm happy to explain."

Helen opened the folder.

"So are we."

She placed a receipt on the table.

"A luxury watch."

Ryan glanced at it.

"Client gift."

Another receipt.

"Private helicopter."

"Business transportation."

A third.

"Five-star spa."

He hesitated.

"Executive wellness retreat."

Helen calmly produced a photograph.

Ryan and Sienna, smiling beside the spa entrance.

No clients.

No business associates.

Only the two of them.

Silence filled the room.

Amelia leaned forward.

"This is your opportunity to answer honestly."

Ryan swallowed.

"I can explain."

"We're listening."

For several seconds, he searched for the right words.

None came.

Back at headquarters, Mara remained in her office overlooking the city.

She did not attend the interview.

Justice, she believed, worked best when it relied on facts rather than emotion.

Her assistant entered quietly.

"The media has no idea."

"Good."

"The Board has requested an update."

"They'll receive one when the evidence is complete."

Her assistant hesitated.

"And if Mr. Carter asks to speak with you?"

Mara turned toward the window.

"He already had that opportunity."

By late afternoon, the audit had expanded beyond entertainment expenses.

Unapproved vendor contracts surfaced.

Duplicate invoices appeared.

Questionable consulting agreements linked to shell companies raised new concerns.

The problem was no longer one executive's poor judgment.

It suggested something much larger.

Helen walked into Mara's office carrying another file.

"You need to see this."

Mara opened it.

The first page contained only one sentence.

Evidence indicates potential involvement of additional senior personnel.

Mara slowly closed the folder.

"So..."

She looked at Helen.

"This was never about one dishonest executive."

Helen nodded.

"I'm afraid not."

"It appears someone has been helping him."

Outside the office windows, the city sparkled beneath the afternoon sun.

Inside Ashford Hospitality Group, the first layer of deception had finally been stripped away.

And beneath it...

An even deeper conspiracy was waiting to be uncovered.
