CHAPTER 12 — THE LAST CONFESSION

CHAPTER 12 — THE LAST CONFESSION
Vanessa asked to see me at midnight.
Not in the mansion.
Not at the hospital.
Not even inside the estate.
She chose the old chapel.
The same chapel where everything had begun to unravel.
When I arrived, she was sitting alone in the front pew.
Her hands were trembling.
There was a bruise along her jaw and a small cut above her eyebrow.
I stopped several feet away.
“You're hurt.”
She gave a bitter laugh.
“So are you.”
My hand moved instinctively toward my stomach.
The baby was still moving.
Still fighting.
Still here.
Vanessa looked at my belly.
Then she looked away.
“I didn't know they would actually try to kill you.”
I stared at her.
“You pushed me down a marble staircase.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
“You could have killed my child.”
“I know.”
“You could have killed me.”
“I know.”
“Then don't sit there and tell me you didn't know what you were doing.”
She lowered her head.
“I knew what I was doing.”
The words hung between us.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“But I didn't know who I was doing it for.”
I remained standing.
“Tell me.”
She looked toward the altar.
“My mother told me you were dangerous.”
I said nothing.
“She said you were going to destroy the family.”
“She told you I was after the fortune.”
“Yes.”
“And you believed her.”
“I believed everyone.”
Her voice cracked.
“I spent my entire life believing my mother.”
She looked at me.
“She told me the Hales were protecting me.”
“And?”
“They weren't.”
I took a slow breath.
“Who was?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“You asked me to meet you.”
“Yes.”
“Then you know something.”
She closed her eyes.
“I know who ordered the staircase attack.”
My heart tightened.
“Who?”
She looked directly at me.
“It wasn't my mother.”
I had expected that answer.
But hearing it still sent a chill through me.
“Then who?”
Vanessa stood.
She walked toward me slowly.
“Before I tell you, you need to understand something.”
“What?”
“The person who ordered it is the same person who has been manipulating everyone.”
My stomach dropped.
“Arthur?”
“No.”
“Daniel?”
“No.”
“Elena?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“No.”
“Then who?”
She whispered:
“Margaret.”
I stared at her.
“My mother-in-law?”
“Yes.”
I shook my head.
“Margaret was in the hospital.”
“She was pretending to be helpless.”
“You saw her?”
“I heard her.”
“When?”
“The night before the attack.”
Vanessa's voice became quieter.
“She called me.”
“What did she say?”
“She said you had to die.”
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“Why?”
“Because your baby had to be born under the Hale bloodline.”
I stared at her.
“I'm married to Julian.”
“Yes.”
“So my child is already a Hale.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not according to the original trust.”
“What does that mean?”
“Julian isn't the heir.”
I frowned.
“Then who is?”
She looked toward the altar.
“Arthur.”
My stomach turned.
“But Arthur is dead.”
“No.”
I stared at her.
“He's alive.”
“I know.”
“And Margaret knew.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she want me dead?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Because your child isn't supposed to inherit.”
“What?”
“She wanted to replace your baby.”
“With what?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“Another child.”
I couldn't speak.
“What child?”
“I don't know.”
“Vanessa.”
“I swear.”
She began crying.
“I only heard them talking.”
“Who?”
“Margaret and Daniel.”
“When?”
“The night before your attack.”
She wiped her face.
“They were in the library.”
“What did they say?”
Vanessa stared at the floor.
“Margaret said, ‘If Claire gives birth, everything becomes hers.’”
My blood ran cold.
“What did Daniel say?”
“He asked what they would do if you survived.”
“And Margaret?”
“She said…”
Vanessa hesitated.
“What?”
“She said, ‘Then we'll make sure the child never carries her name.’”
I closed my eyes.
The baby moved.
A sharp kick.
I placed my palm against my stomach.
Vanessa whispered:
“I didn't understand.”
“Understand what?”
“She wasn't talking about killing the baby.”
I looked at her.
“She was talking about changing the baby's identity.”
My heart pounded.
“How?”
“By declaring you mentally unfit.”
I stared.
“She planned to make everyone believe I was unstable.”
“Yes.”
“And take my child?”
“Yes.”
“Who would become guardian?”
Vanessa didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
I already knew.
“Margaret.”
Vanessa nodded.
I walked toward the chapel window.
Outside, rain fell over the grounds.
For months, I had thought the enemy wanted my money.
Then I thought they wanted the Hale fortune.
Then I thought they wanted my child.
But this was different.
They wanted control of my child's identity.
They wanted to erase me.
They wanted to make my child belong to them.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“Why tell me now?”
She looked down.
“Because Margaret tried to kill me.”
I froze.
“What?”
“Two nights ago.”
“Why?”
“Because I refused to lie anymore.”
Vanessa pulled up her sleeve.
A dark bruise wrapped around her wrist.
“She grabbed me.”
“What did she say?”
Vanessa whispered:
“She said I was no longer useful.”
I stared.
“She was going to kill you?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she let you go?”
“She didn't.”
Vanessa reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small recording device.
“This did.”
She pressed a button.
A voice filled the chapel.
Margaret.
Calm.
Cold.
“If she survives, blame Vanessa.”
I froze.
The recording continued.
“Everyone already believes Vanessa is unstable.”
Another voice.
Daniel.
“What about Claire?”
Margaret answered:
“She won't survive the staircase.”
My stomach turned.
Then Daniel asked:
“And the baby?”
Silence.
Margaret replied:
“The baby will.”
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face was wet with tears.
The recording continued.
“The child is too valuable to destroy.”
Daniel asked:
“Then what?”
Margaret's voice became almost gentle.
“We remove Claire.”
A pause.
“Then we raise the child ourselves.”
The recording ended.
The chapel fell silent.
I listened again.
Then again.
Each time, the same truth became clearer.
Margaret had planned everything.
The medication.
The forged records.
The staircase.
The false accusations.
The attempted removal of my child.
But one thing still didn't make sense.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why did she tell Daniel the baby would survive?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.”
I thought about Margaret's words.
The child is too valuable to destroy.
Why?
What was so special about my baby?
Then I remembered the old photograph.
The baby marked E.M.
The hidden trust.
The bloodline.
The vault.
The succession protocol.
Everything connected to the child.
I whispered:
“It's not the fortune.”
Vanessa looked at me.
“What?”
“The baby isn't valuable because of the money.”
“Then why?”
“Because of the bloodline.”
She went pale.
“What does that mean?”
I remembered Margaret's final message.
Your child is the key to opening the vault.
I looked at Vanessa.
“They don't want my baby to inherit the empire.”
“Then what?”
“They want the baby to open something.”
The chapel doors suddenly opened.
Julian stood there.
His face was pale.
“I heard everything.”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“Julian…”
He looked at her.
“You knew.”
“I was scared.”
“You knew my grandmother ordered the attack.”
“Yes.”
“And you didn't tell me?”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Before the staircase.”
Julian looked at me.
“I should have protected you.”
I shook my head.
“You didn't.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
There was pain in his voice.
But I couldn't allow myself to comfort him.
Not anymore.
“Where is Margaret?”
Julian looked at me.
“I don't know.”
“She's alive.”
“I know.”
“Then find her.”
“I will.”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“We will.”
We returned to the estate before dawn.
The mansion was empty.
Too empty.
Every light was off.
Every door unlocked.
Every security camera disabled.
Julian walked beside me.
Vanessa followed.
My father and Edward searched the property.
Then we reached the library.
The room where so many secrets had begun.
Julian opened the desk.
Inside was a single envelope.
My name was written on it.
CLAIRE.
I opened it.
Inside was one page.
Margaret's handwriting.
You are looking for the wrong enemy.
I read the next line.
Vanessa did not order your death.
Then:
I did.
I froze.
Below it:
But I was not the person who ordered me to do it.
My heart pounded.
I looked at Julian.
He read over my shoulder.
The next sentence was worse.
There is someone above me.
Then:
Someone above Arthur.
Then:
Someone above Elena.
The final line was written in darker ink.
And that person has been inside your family from the beginning.
I stared at the words.
Vanessa whispered:
“Who?”
I turned the page over.
Nothing.
Then I noticed a faint indentation.
Someone had written something on the other side before the ink was removed.
I held the paper beneath the desk lamp.
Letters slowly became visible.
THE FATHER.
My blood ran cold.
My father?
No.
That couldn't be right.
I ran out of the library.
“Dad!”
No answer.
I searched the hall.
Nothing.
Then I heard a sound behind me.
A door closing.
I turned.
My father stood at the end of the corridor.
His face was expressionless.
“Claire.”
I stared at him.
“Did you order the attack?”
He didn't answer.
“Dad?”
His eyes moved toward my stomach.
Then back to me.
“I never wanted you hurt.”
“That's not what I asked.”
Silence.
“Did you?”
He looked devastated.
“No.”
I exhaled.
Then he added:
“But I knew it was coming.”
I froze.
“What?”
“I knew Vanessa would attack you.”
“When?”
“Before you arrived at the staircase.”
My voice shook.
“Then why didn't you stop her?”
He looked away.
“Because I needed her to do it.”
I stared.
“What?”
“I needed proof.”
My heart pounded.
“You used me as bait.”
He stepped toward me.
“I knew Vanessa was being manipulated.”
“You let her push me.”
“I knew the camera would protect you.”
“You didn't know if I'd survive!”
His face broke.
“I knew.”
“How?”
“Because the staircase was reinforced.”
I stared.
“What?”
“The marble steps were modified months ago.”
“You planned the whole thing?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
He looked at me.
“The person who ordered Margaret.”
I felt cold.
“Who?”
My father swallowed.
“The man who has been protecting you since you were born.”
I shook my head.
“That doesn't answer my question.”
He whispered:
“Your grandfather.”
I stared.
“My grandfather is dead.”
“No.”
Silence.
“He isn't.”
My father's eyes filled with fear.
“He has been alive this entire time.”
I stepped backward.
“Where?”
My father looked toward the window.
Then toward the old family portrait.
“He owns the house.”
I froze.
“What?”
“He has been watching everything.”
My father whispered the final words.
“Every attack.”
“Every lie.”
“Every death.”
“And now…”
He looked at my stomach.
“…he wants his great-grandchild.”
At that exact moment, every light in the mansion turned on.
The grandfather clock began striking midnight.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then the hidden speakers crackled.
A man's voice filled the house.
Old.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Welcome home, Claire.”
I couldn't breathe.
My father closed his eyes.
Vanessa began trembling.
Julian reached for my hand.
The voice continued.
“You've spent so much time searching for me.”
A pause.
“You never realized…”
The grandfather clock stopped.
“…I was searching for you too.”
Then every door in the mansion locked simultaneously.
And from somewhere beneath the house came the sound of a child's cry.
The same cry we had heard before.
But this time, it wasn't a recording.
It was real.
And my unborn child suddenly kicked so violently that I cried out.
The voice returned.
“Bring me my heir.”
Then silence.
I looked at my father.
He whispered:
May you like
“Run.”
But it was already too late.
