CHAPTER 9 — THE CHILD THEY WANTED

CHAPTER 9 — THE CHILD THEY WANTED

The crying stopped.

Just as suddenly as it had begun.

I stood frozen at the entrance to the hidden passage, one hand instinctively covering my stomach.

My unborn child moved beneath my palm.

A small kick.

A reminder that whatever secrets this house contained, there was still a life inside me that knew nothing about them.

A life everyone seemed willing to kill for.

Or kill to control.

I looked at Edward.

“You said I have a sister.”

“Yes.”

“And now there's a child crying beneath this house?”

Edward's face tightened.

“The sound wasn't a child.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“A recording.”

Julian exhaled.

“Then why did it sound so real?”

“Because the vault was designed to preserve voices.”

Vanessa whispered:

“My mother used it.”

Edward nodded.

“Eleanor recorded everything.”

I looked toward the darkness.

“Then let's hear it.”

Edward shook his head.

“Not yet.”

I was beginning to hate those words.

“Everyone keeps telling me not yet.”

I stepped toward him.

“I'm done waiting.”

Edward studied me.

Then he nodded.

“Good.”

He pulled a small key from inside his coat.

“This time, you go first.”

The stairs beneath the mansion were older than the house itself.

Stone.

Damp.

Narrow.

The deeper we went, the colder it became.

Julian stayed beside me.

My father followed.

Vanessa came last.

Edward moved slowly with his cane.

At the bottom stood a circular steel door.

There was no keypad.

No keyhole.

Instead, there was a fingerprint scanner.

Edward looked at me.

“Your hand.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because the vault was built for you.”

I pressed my palm against the scanner.

Nothing happened.

Then a red light flashed.

IDENTITY NOT RECOGNIZED.

Edward looked surprised.

“Try again.”

I did.

Nothing.

Julian stepped closer.

“Maybe it's not her.”

Edward shook his head.

“It is.”

“Then why won't it open?”

Edward stared at my hand.

Then his eyes widened.

“Because you're pregnant.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“The vault doesn't recognize your fingerprints alone.”

He looked at my stomach.

“It recognizes the bloodline.”

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

Edward walked toward the scanner.

“It means the system requires two living genetic signatures.”

Mine.

And the baby's.

Julian went pale.

“The baby is already registered?”

Edward nodded.

“Before conception.”

I stared.

“That isn't possible.”

“It shouldn't be.”

“Then who registered my child?”

Edward looked at me.

“The original trust.”

The scanner suddenly turned green.

TWO SIGNATURES CONFIRMED.

The door unlocked.

Nobody spoke.

I pushed it open.

The vault was enormous.

Not a room.

A chamber.

Shelves lined the walls.

Steel cabinets.

Boxes.

Documents.

Hard drives.

Medical records.

Birth certificates.

Photographs.

And at the center stood a glass case.

Inside was a small silver bracelet.

I recognized it immediately.

I had seen it in my childhood photographs.

I walked toward it.

“My mother gave me that.”

Edward nodded.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Then who?”

“Your sister.”

My heart stopped.

“My sister wore it first.”

I stared through the glass.

The bracelet had a tiny engraving.

C.M.

My initials.

But beneath them was another set.

E.M.

I looked at Edward.

“Who is E.M.?”

He didn't answer.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Eleanor Morgan.”

My father closed his eyes.

I turned toward him.

“Dad.”

He said nothing.

“Who is Eleanor Morgan?”

Edward answered.

“Your sister.”

I stared at him.

“But Eleanor Hale is Vanessa's mother.”

“Correct.”

“Then—”

“Your sister was given to the Hale family.”

The world seemed to tilt.

“My sister was adopted by the Hales?”

“No.”

Edward's voice was quiet.

“She was never adopted.”

“Then what happened?”

He looked at my father.

“Tell her.”

My father shook his head.

“I can't.”

“You can.”

“No.”

Edward's voice hardened.

“You've hidden enough.”

My father finally looked at me.

“Your mother had twins.”

I couldn't breathe.

“Twins?”

“Yes.”

“You never told me.”

“We were told one child had died.”

I touched my stomach.

“Who?”

“You.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

“You were the surviving child.”

I stared.

“Then who was my sister?”

My father swallowed.

“Eleanor.”

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.”

“It does.”

“No.”

I pointed toward the bracelet.

“That says Eleanor Morgan.”

“Yes.”

“And Eleanor Hale?”

“Is the same person.”

I felt sick.

“Vanessa's mother is my sister?”

Vanessa stared at Edward.

“No.”

Edward nodded.

“Yes.”

Vanessa stepped backward.

“My mother…”

“Is Claire's twin sister.”

Vanessa looked at me.

Then at Edward.

Then at my father.

Her face crumpled.

“All these years…”

Nobody answered.

I sat down on a metal chair.

My mind raced.

My sister had lived.

She had been taken.

She had married into the Hale family.

She had a daughter.

Vanessa.

And somehow, my unborn child had become the legal center of everything.

I looked at Edward.

“Why was Eleanor given to the Hales?”

“She wasn't given.”

“Then what?”

“She was stolen.”

“By whom?”

Edward's expression darkened.

“Arthur.”

I looked at Julian.

He looked devastated.

“My father stole your sister?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Edward walked toward the central table.

“Because he discovered your grandfather's trust.”

I stared.

“The trust was created for me.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“It was created for both twins.”

“Then why is my name on it?”

“Because Eleanor was declared dead.”

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying.

“My mother was never dead.”

“No.”

“Then why did everyone think she was?”

“Because Arthur needed one twin erased.”

“Why?”

Edward opened a file.

Inside was an old medical report.

“Because only one twin could inherit the original bloodline trust.”

I stared.

“Why?”

“Your grandfather feared the family would fight over control.”

“So he chose one?”

“No.”

“He created a test.”

I frowned.

“What kind of test?”

“Bloodline.”

Edward placed the document before me.

“The trust would activate only when the surviving heir produced a child.”

My hand moved to my stomach.

I finally understood.

“The baby.”

Edward nodded.

“The child is the legal key.”

Julian stared at the document.

“Not Claire?”

“Claire is the guardian.”

“And the baby?”

“The beneficiary.”

I felt cold.

“So the baby inherits everything.”

“Yes.”

“The entire Aurelia empire?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Edward looked at me.

“Enough to make governments interested.”

Julian whispered:

“Billions.”

Edward nodded.

“More.”

I stared at my stomach.

The baby moved again.

I felt tears forming.

“They knew.”

Edward nodded.

“Arthur knew.”

“Vanessa knew?”

“No.”

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Eleanor?”

“Yes.”

“Who else?”

Edward's expression became grim.

“Everyone who has tried to control you.”

A monitor suddenly turned on.

A document appeared.

SUCCESSION EVENT — PENDING

Then:

BENEFICIARY: UNBORN CHILD OF CLAIRE MORGAN

Then:

LEGAL STATUS: PROTECTED

Then:

PROTECTION LEVEL: MAXIMUM

Julian stared.

“What does maximum mean?”

Edward answered.

“No transfer can occur while the child is unborn.”

“Why?”

“Because the law cannot assign guardianship without a confirmed birth.”

“So they have to wait.”

Edward nodded.

“Unless they kill Claire.”

The room went silent.

I looked at him.

“If I die…”

“The trust remains locked.”

“And the baby?”

“If the baby survives, the trust transfers to the child.”

Julian stepped forward.

“Then killing Claire doesn't solve anything.”

Edward looked at him.

“It does if they can control the child.”

My blood ran cold.

“What are you saying?”

“That's why Vanessa attacked you.”

I stared at her.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn't know.”

Edward nodded.

“I believe you.”

“Then why did she do it?”

“Because she was told the child would be removed from Claire and placed under Vanessa's guardianship.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Arthur told me the trust would become mine.”

“He lied.”

“Yes.”

“He wanted you to become the legal guardian.”

“But why?”

Edward looked at me.

“Because guardianship is control.”

Julian's face hardened.

“He planned to use Vanessa.”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

Edward looked toward the files.

“Once the child reached adulthood, the trust would become accessible.”

Julian whispered:

“So Arthur wanted to control our child for eighteen years.”

Edward nodded.

“And by then, he would control everything.”

Vanessa suddenly walked toward the documents.

She picked one up.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at her.

“This isn't Arthur's signature.”

Edward frowned.

“What?”

She held out the document.

“This order.”

I looked.

There was a signature at the bottom.

Not Arthur.

Not Daniel.

Not my father.

Someone else.

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“This is the signature on the messages.”

I stared.

“Whose?”

She whispered:

“My mother's.”

I felt my heart stop.

“Eleanor?”

Vanessa nodded.

“But she was being held.”

“Yes.”

“Then how could she have signed this?”

Edward took the paper.

His face changed.

“This was signed three months ago.”

Julian looked at him.

“Impossible.”

Edward stared at the signature.

“No.”

“What?”

“She wasn't being held three months ago.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“What are you saying?”

Vanessa's face went white.

“My mother escaped.”

Silence.

Edward nodded slowly.

“And she has been moving through the house.”

I felt a chill.

“The woman behind the wall.”

“Yes.”

“The voice.”

“Yes.”

“The messages.”

“Yes.”

“Eleanor.”

Edward nodded.

“She has been controlling everything.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“She was controlling Arthur?”

“Apparently.”

“Then why?”

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Because she wants the baby.”

A sound came from the corridor.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Coming toward us.

Julian immediately moved in front of me.

My father reached for a weapon.

Edward raised his hand.

“Don't.”

The footsteps stopped.

Then a woman's voice echoed through the vault.

“Claire.”

My heart stopped.

I knew that voice.

I'd heard it in the recordings.

I'd heard it in my childhood memories.

My mother's voice.

But my mother was dead.

At least, that was what I'd been told.

“Claire.”

The voice came again.

Vanessa began crying.

“Mom?”

Silence.

Then:

“I'm sorry.”

The vault door opened.

A woman stood outside.

She was older.

Pale.

Thin.

Her hair was streaked with silver.

But her eyes were unmistakable.

I stared at her.

My entire body went numb.

“Mom?”

She smiled.

“Hello, my daughter.”

I couldn't breathe.

She walked toward me.

Then stopped when she saw my stomach.

Her expression changed.

Not fear.

Not surprise.

Something far more complicated.

Possession.

She whispered:

“My grandson.”

I stepped backward.

Julian tightened his grip on my hand.

My mother looked at him.

“You married her.”

Julian said nothing.

She looked at me again.

“You have no idea what they have done to you.”

I shook my head.

“You've been alive.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“You had twenty years.”

“I was imprisoned.”

“By Arthur?”

She looked toward Edward.

“No.”

Edward's face hardened.

“Then who?”

My mother smiled sadly.

“Your grandfather.”

Everyone froze.

I looked at Edward.

He didn't deny it.

My mother continued:

“Arthur was never my captor.”

She looked at me.

“He was my jailer.”

Then at Edward.

“But your grandfather was the one who ordered it.”

I couldn't speak.

Edward looked away.

My mother stepped closer.

“Your grandfather feared what would happen if both twins survived.”

“Why?”

“Because one of us would inherit.”

She looked at my stomach.

“But then you became pregnant.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The trust changed.”

I swallowed.

“How?”

“The child became more important than either of us.”

She reached toward me.

I instinctively stepped back.

Her hand stopped in the air.

“Claire.”

“What do you want?”

She looked at my unborn child.

“I want what should have belonged to me.”

My heart pounded.

“The inheritance?”

“No.”

She whispered:

“The child.”

Julian stepped forward.

“You're not taking our baby.”

My mother looked at him.

“You don't understand.”

“No.”

“I know what the trust will do.”

“What?”

She looked at me.

“When the baby is born, the entire Hale empire becomes legally untouchable.”

“Why?”

“Because the trust was designed to protect the heir.”

She smiled faintly.

“And whoever controls the heir controls the empire.”

I felt sick.

“You want to control my child.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I want to save it.”

“From what?”

She looked toward Edward.

“From the man who created the trust.”

Edward's expression hardened.

“Eleanor.”

“You know I'm right.”

He said nothing.

My mother turned back to me.

“Your grandfather didn't create the trust to protect you.”

“Then why?”

She whispered:

“To control us.”

The vault fell silent.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“Claire…”

She touched her own chest.

“I didn't come here for the money.”

She looked at my stomach.

“I came because your child is the only person who can expose what happened twenty-two years ago.”

I stared at her.

“What happened?”

She looked at Edward.

Then at my father.

Then at Julian.

Finally, she whispered:

“The Hale fortune was never stolen from my family.”

A pause.

“It was created from blood.”

She pointed toward the sealed files.

“And the first person they killed for it…”

Her voice broke.

“…was your twin brother.”

I froze.

“My what?”

My mother closed her eyes.

“You weren't supposed to have one sister.”

She looked at me.

“You were supposed to have two siblings.”

The vault seemed to disappear.

Then the lights went out.

Again.

And somewhere in the darkness, a baby's heartbeat began playing through the speakers.

Fast.

Fragile.

Alive.

A computerized voice followed.

SUCCESSION EVENT: 97 DAYS REMAINING.

Then:

PROTECTION PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.

Then:

THREAT LEVEL: EXTREME.

And finally—

ALL BLOODLINE BENEFICIARIES ARE NOW SUBJECT TO TARGETING.

I grabbed Julian's hand.

He whispered:

“What does that mean?”

Edward looked toward the ceiling.

“It means they know the baby is still alive.”

My mother looked at me.

And for the first time since she had entered the room, I saw genuine terror in her eyes.

“Claire…”

“What?”

She whispered:

“They're coming.”

“Who?”

She looked behind us.

“The people who have been waiting for the baby to be born.”

A distant alarm began to sound.

Then another.

Then another.

Above us, the mansion doors slammed shut.

The security system activated.

And every screen in the vault displayed the same message:

May you like

THE HEIR HAS BEEN LOCATED.

BEGIN EXTRACTION.
