Chapter 12 — The Woman Olivia Betrayed

Chapter 12 — The Woman Olivia Betrayed
My mother's last sentence followed me into the rain.
The person who took Lily is someone you have been trusting all along.
I stared at her.
“Who?”
She didn't answer.
“Mom.”
Her face crumpled.
“I couldn't tell you before.”
“You don't get to say that anymore.”
“I know.”
“Where is Lily?”
“She is alive.”
“That isn't enough.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me where she is.”
My mother looked toward Gabriel.
He stepped forward.
“There's something you need to understand first.”
I turned on him.
“No more secrets.”
He stopped.
I pointed at my mother.
“No more protecting me.”
Then at him.
“No more deciding what I can handle.”
My voice shook.
“My daughter has been missing while every adult in this family has been deciding which parts of the truth I deserve.”
My mother lowered her head.
“You're right.”
“Who took her?”
She whispered one name.
“Julian.”
My blood went cold.
Julian Sterling.
The man who had helped me.
The man I had trusted.
The man who had found me after the birthday incident.
The man who had told me the truth about my inheritance.
The man who had stood beside me in court.
The man who had promised to protect Lily.
“No.”
My mother nodded.
“He took her.”
I stared at Gabriel.
He looked devastated.
“Why?”
My mother closed her eyes.
“Because Julian was never working for us.”
We drove through the rain.
No one spoke.
I sat in the back seat beside my mother.
Gabriel sat opposite us.
Richard was in another vehicle under police escort.
Helen had remained behind to finish the arrests.
I held Lily's pink ribbon in my fist.
My daughter was alive.
That was what mattered.
But Julian had her.
And I had trusted him.
I remembered the first time we met.
He had approached me after the birthday party.
He hadn't stared at my ruined dress.
He hadn't laughed.
He had looked at Lily.
Then at me.
He had said:
“A mother shouldn't have to defend her child alone.”
I believed him.
That sentence had become the beginning of my trust.
Now it felt like the beginning of the trap.
“Why did you trust him?” I asked my mother.
She looked out the window.
“Because he saved your life once.”
“When?”
“Before you met him.”
I frowned.
“I don't understand.”
“You were eighteen.”
I stared.
“I've never met Julian before the birthday party.”
“You don't remember him.”
“Why?”
“Because he was the man who pulled you out of the car.”
My stomach tightened.
“What car?”
“The accident.”
I stared at her.
“What accident?”
She turned toward me.
“The accident that killed Alexander.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
She swallowed.
“Your grandfather didn't die naturally.”
The rain struck the windows.
“He was murdered.”
I whispered:
“You told me he died in his sleep.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because Julian was there.”
I couldn't breathe.
“Julian killed him?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“He tried to save him.”
My mother looked down.
“Alexander was bleeding. The car had gone over the embankment.”
“Who caused it?”
“Daniel.”
I stared.
“Then Julian saved me.”
“Yes.”
“But why would he betray me now?”
My mother didn't answer.
Gabriel did.
“Because Julian wasn't protecting you.”
I turned.
“He was protecting the trust.”
“What does that mean?”
“He was assigned to watch the Sterling heirs.”
I froze.
“By whom?”
“Alexander.”
I looked at my mother.
She nodded.
“Julian was Alexander's most trusted operative.”
“Then why would he take Lily?”
“Because Alexander's final instruction wasn't what we thought.”
“What was it?”
My mother reached into her bag.
She removed an old envelope.
Black wax.
An orchid.
She placed it in my hand.
“Read it.”
I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
If the Sterling heir is ever endangered, the child must be removed from all known guardians.
I stared.
“Removed?”
“Yes.”
“Taken?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To protect the child from the family.”
I looked at my mother.
“You're saying Julian took Lily because he thought I was dangerous?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because someone convinced him that you were compromised.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who?”
My mother whispered:
“Olivia.”
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because the entire story had become insane.
“Olivia convinced Julian?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She showed him evidence.”
“What evidence?”
“A medical report.”
My stomach tightened.
“What report?”
“That you had a psychological breakdown after the birthday party.”
“That was fake.”
“I know.”
“But Julian believed it?”
“For a time.”
I closed my eyes.
The false report.
The forged custody documents.
The birthday video.
Everything connected.
Olivia hadn't simply wanted Lily.
She had needed someone trustworthy enough to remove her.
Someone who could move Lily without raising suspicion.
Someone who could convince himself he was protecting her.
Julian.
“Where is Lily now?”
My mother looked at me.
“An old Sterling property.”
“Which one?”
“The Black Orchid estate.”
I had never heard of it.
“Where?”
“Connecticut.”
“How far?”
“Two hours.”
I grabbed the driver's seat.
“Go faster.”
The estate was hidden behind miles of forest.
A stone gate opened automatically.
We drove through.
The house appeared through the trees.
Old.
Massive.
Almost completely dark.
Except for one upstairs window.
A child's silhouette stood behind it.
I stopped breathing.
“Lily.”
I opened the door before the car fully stopped.
My mother grabbed me.
“Wait.”
I pulled away.
“No.”
“Maya, listen.”
“I've listened enough.”
I ran toward the house.
The front door opened.
Julian stood inside.
He wasn't holding a weapon.
He looked exhausted.
His suit was soaked.
His eyes were red.
“Maya.”
“Where is my daughter?”
“Upstairs.”
I stepped forward.
He didn't stop me.
I walked past him.
Then stopped.
“Did you take her?”
“Yes.”
“Did you lie to me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you betray me?”
He looked at me.
“Yes.”
My heart shattered.
“Why?”
He whispered:
“Because I thought I was saving her.”
I pushed past him.
I ran upstairs.
The hallway was empty.
Then I heard laughter.
A child's laughter.
I opened the door.
Lily stood beside a woman.
My mother.
No.
Not my mother.
A woman who looked like my mother.
For one impossible second, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.
Then the woman turned.
She was older.
Her hair was darker.
But her eyes were unmistakable.
I whispered:
“Olivia?”
She smiled.
“Hello, Maya.”
My blood froze.
She was holding Lily's hand.
My daughter ran toward me.
“Mommy!”
I dropped to my knees.
Lily crashed into my arms.
I held her so tightly she squealed.
“I thought I'd lost you.”
“I missed you.”
I kissed her hair.
Her cheeks.
Her forehead.
Everywhere.
Then I looked up.
Olivia was still smiling.
“You're safe,” she said.
I stood.
“Why?”
“Because I protected you.”
“You kidnapped my daughter.”
“I rescued her.”
“You lied.”
“I protected the trust.”
“You manipulated Julian.”
“I gave him the evidence he needed.”
I stepped toward her.
“You ruined my life.”
Olivia's smile disappeared.
“No.”
She looked at Lily.
“Your family did.”
Gabriel entered the room.
His face hardened.
“You.”
Olivia looked at him.
“Hello, brother.”
My blood froze.
Brother.
Gabriel and Olivia.
I stared.
“What?”
Gabriel stepped forward.
“Olivia is my sister.”
I looked at my mother.
She lowered her head.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“You all knew.”
Silence.
I laughed bitterly.
“This family is unbelievable.”
Olivia's expression softened.
“You were never supposed to know.”
“Why?”
“Because your father built the Black Orchid Trust using our family's blood.”
“What does that mean?”
Olivia looked at Lily.
“It means every Sterling heir has been protected by someone who eventually betrayed them.”
I stared.
“And you?”
“I was the first.”
Olivia explained.
The Black Orchid Trust had been created decades earlier.
Not simply as a financial structure.
It was a network.
Money.
Property.
Identities.
Safe houses.
Witnesses.
Children.
People who needed protection from powerful families.
But there was one rule.
The heir could never know the full structure.
Because knowledge created vulnerability.
Every heir had a guardian.
Every guardian had a secret.
And every secret could be exploited.
Alexander chose Olivia.
Then Gabriel.
Then Julian.
Each had been given one instruction.
Protect the heir at all costs.
But Olivia had interpreted the order differently.
She believed protecting the trust mattered more than protecting the person.
“You chose money over me,” I said.
“No.”
She looked at me.
“I chose Lily over you.”
I stared.
“Why?”
“Because you were becoming like Daniel.”
I felt as if she'd slapped me.
“You don't know me.”
“I know you better than you think.”
“No.”
“You were angry.”
“I had every reason.”
“You wanted revenge.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted to destroy Richard.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted to expose Daniel.”
“Yes.”
Olivia nodded.
“That is exactly what Daniel wanted.”
My stomach turned.
“What?”
“He wanted you to become so consumed by revenge that you'd activate the trust improperly.”
I looked at Lily.
“What would happen?”
“You would lose control.”
“How?”
“The trust would automatically transfer to the emergency guardian.”
“Who?”
Olivia looked at Julian.
“Your protector.”
My blood went cold.
Julian stepped forward.
“I didn't know.”
Olivia looked at him.
“You knew enough.”
He shook his head.
“I thought Maya was in danger.”
“You were wrong.”
“Yes.”
He looked at me.
“I was wrong.”
I walked toward Julian.
“You took my daughter.”
“Yes.”
“You kept her from me.”
“Yes.”
“You made me believe she was kidnapped.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I thought you were being watched.”
“You could have told me.”
“I couldn't risk it.”
“You could have trusted me.”
He lowered his head.
“I know.”
I stared at him.
“You don't get to decide whether I'm worth trusting.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
I turned away.
Lily tugged at my hand.
“Mommy?”
I looked down.
“Yes?”
“Are we going home?”
My heart broke.
“Yes.”
I picked her up.
“We're going home.”
Then Olivia spoke.
“You can't.”
I turned.
“Watch me.”
“The trust won't allow it.”
“What trust?”
“The Black Orchid Trust.”
I stared.
“The trust has already activated.”
My mother looked frightened.
“What did you do?”
Olivia smiled.
“I registered Lily's name.”
“What name?”
She held up a document.
Lily Sterling Vale.
My daughter's legal identity had been changed.
The trust was active.
And Olivia had activated it.
I stared at the document.
“You wanted her name.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because now the trust recognizes Lily as the heir.”
“And you control it.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“You do.”
I froze.
“What?”
“You are Lily's legal guardian.”
My mother stepped forward.
“Then why take her?”
Olivia's face changed.
“Because someone else was about to.”
“Who?”
She looked toward the window.
A red light appeared in the darkness.
Then another.
Laser sights.
Julian immediately pulled me down.
“Get Lily behind me.”
Gunfire exploded outside.
Glass shattered.
Lily screamed.
Gabriel drew his weapon.
“Everyone down!”
Olivia grabbed Lily.
I lunged for my daughter.
Another shot.
The lights went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
I heard Julian shout:
“MOVE!”
Someone crashed through the window.
A man grabbed Olivia.
She screamed.
“NO!”
I reached for Lily.
My fingers closed around her hand.
I pulled.
She fell into my arms.
Then the attacker disappeared through the window.
Olivia was gone.
I held Lily against my chest.
Julian stood beside me.
Blood ran down his arm.
“Are you hurt?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
Gabriel looked through the broken window.
“Who were they?”
Julian stared into the darkness.
“I know that vehicle.”
I looked at him.
“Who?”
He whispered:
“Daniel.”
My heart sank.
“Daniel was arrested.”
Julian shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at the road.
“That wasn't Daniel.”
“Then who?”
Julian's face went pale.
“Someone who has been controlling him.”
I stared.
“Who?”
He looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“The real owner of the Black Orchid Trust.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who?”
Julian swallowed.
“Your grandfather.”
I froze.
“Alexander is dead.”
“I know.”
“Then how?”
Julian looked toward the darkness.
“Because he didn't create the trust before he died.”
I couldn't breathe.
“He created it afterward.”
Silence.
I held Lily tighter.
“What are you saying?”
Julian looked at me.
“The man we buried twenty-nine years ago…”
He paused.
“…wasn't Alexander.”
My world stopped.
And suddenly every lie I had ever been told had a new face.
A face that might still be alive.
A face that might be coming for my daughter.
And if Julian was right—
May you like
the custody war had never been about who would raise Lily.
It had been about who would control the heir when the real owner finally came home.
