Chapter 5 — The Woman Who Recorded Everything

Chapter 5 — The Woman Who Recorded Everything

The first thing I noticed was the red light.

It was blinking beneath the dashboard of the black sedan parked across from the abandoned estate.

One blink.

Then darkness.

One blink.

Then darkness.

A camera.

Someone was watching us.

I pointed toward the vehicle.

“Julian.”

He followed my gaze.

His expression changed immediately.

“Get down.”

He pulled me behind the stone wall.

Three seconds later, the sedan started.

The engine roared.

Julian reached for his weapon.

But the vehicle didn't move toward us.

Instead, it turned slowly and disappeared down the road.

“Was that them?”

“Maybe.”

“You said this place was abandoned.”

“It was.”

“Then someone was waiting.”

Julian looked at the backpack in my hands.

“And they knew we'd come.”

I stared at the empty road.

My daughter's backpack suddenly felt heavier than it should have.

“Then someone is feeding them information.”

Julian nodded.

“And I think I know who.”

We returned to Manhattan before midnight.

The entire drive, I couldn't stop thinking about the photograph.

My father.

Alive.

Standing beside Daniel Vance.

Twenty-nine years ago.

The photograph had been old, but not old enough to be meaningless.

There was something else in it.

A woman stood behind them.

Half hidden by a doorway.

I had barely noticed her at first.

But once I did, I couldn't stop seeing her.

She was holding a small camera.

Julian enlarged the image.

The woman became clearer.

Dark hair.

Pale coat.

A silver necklace.

And a tiny orchid pinned to her collar.

I stared.

“Who is she?”

Julian didn't answer.

“Julian.”

He zoomed further.

The woman's face appeared.

My breath caught.

I knew her.

Not personally.

But I had seen her before.

On television.

In photographs.

In old newspaper articles.

“That's…”

Julian nodded.

“Vanessa Vance.”

I stared at the screen.

Richard's mistress.

Daniel Vance's financial intermediary.

The woman who had recorded me at Lily's birthday party.

The woman who had laughed while my face was shoved into my daughter's cake.

She had been connected to my family long before I ever met Richard.

“How?”

Julian looked at the photograph.

“That is the question.”

I remembered the birthday party.

Vanessa had held up her phone.

She had recorded everything.

At the time, I thought she was simply cruel.

Now I wondered if she had been collecting evidence.

“Play the birthday video.”

Julian looked at me.

“Why?”

“Because I want to know what she was really recording.”

The video began.

My backyard.

Forty-seven guests.

Lily's birthday decorations.

Music.

Laughter.

Then Richard.

His hand in my hair.

The cake.

My face.

The laughter.

I watched myself stand up.

I watched Lily cry.

I watched myself tell her:

“It's sweet, my love. Don't cry.”

The video ended.

Julian looked at me.

“Anything unusual?”

I rewound it.

Again.

Then again.

I slowed the footage.

Vanessa stood near the pool.

She wasn't laughing.

Not really.

Her mouth was curved upward, but her eyes were fixed on someone behind me.

I paused.

“Who is she looking at?”

Julian enlarged the frame.

A man stood near the side gate.

Dark suit.

Gray hair.

He wasn't part of the party.

I stared.

“Who is that?”

Julian's expression hardened.

“Daniel Vance.”

My stomach dropped.

“He was there?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't I see him?”

“Because you weren't supposed to.”

I looked at the screen.

Daniel wasn't watching Richard.

He wasn't watching Lily.

He was watching me.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

She nodded.

Once.

I rewound the footage.

Again.

The nod.

The look.

The camera.

My stomach turned.

“She wasn't recording the humiliation.”

Julian looked at me.

“She was recording my reaction.”

“Exactly.”

The next morning, Julian received an encrypted file.

No sender.

No message.

Just one folder.

Inside were hundreds of video files.

Dates spanning twenty-nine years.

I stared at the screen.

“Open one.”

Julian did.

The first video showed a young woman.

My mother.

She was sitting at a kitchen table.

Holding a baby.

Me.

I stopped breathing.

Her face was exhausted.

She looked directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this…”

She paused.

Then smiled sadly.

“Then someone finally found the recordings.”

I moved closer.

Julian said nothing.

My mother continued.

“I don't know how old you'll be.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But if you are seeing this, Maya, then you are old enough to know why I disappeared.”

I covered my mouth.

She knew.

She had planned for this.

“I didn't leave you because I stopped loving you.”

She looked down at me.

“I left because your father asked me to.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Julian froze the video.

I stared.

“Play it.”

He continued.

My mother's voice shook.

“Your father wasn't dead when I left.”

I felt dizzy.

“He was alive.”

The video stopped.

I looked at Julian.

“There's more.”

He opened another file.

The date was three months later.

My mother again.

This time she was crying.

“Alexander is gone.”

She looked toward the door.

“They found him.”

The recording ended.

I stood.

“Who found him?”

Julian shook his head.

“We need the rest.”

The second video began.

My mother looked older.

Tired.

Frightened.

“I have to tell the truth now.”

She stared into the camera.

“Alexander did not disappear because he wanted to.”

She took a breath.

“He was taken.”

I whispered:

“By whom?”

She continued.

“Daniel Vance.”

Julian's jaw tightened.

My mother looked down.

“Daniel was your father's closest adviser.”

She wiped a tear.

“He knew everything.”

“Every account.”

“Every company.”

“Every secret.”

“And he wanted the Sterling fortune.”

I stared at her.

“So he kidnapped my father.”

The video continued.

“He didn't kill him.”

My heart stopped.

“He kept him alive.”

I looked at Julian.

“Why?”

My mother answered the question before he could.

“Because Alexander had something Daniel needed.”

The video ended.

I immediately opened the next file.

My mother appeared again.

This time she was standing in a hotel room.

Her voice was barely audible.

“Alexander has refused to give them the key.”

“What key?”

She looked directly into the camera.

“The key to the Black Orchid account.”

Julian leaned forward.

“Black Orchid?”

I looked at him.

“What is that?”

He shook his head.

“I've heard the name.”

“Where?”

“Financial intelligence reports.”

“What is it?”

“An offshore account structure.”

“How much?”

“We don't know.”

“Then find out.”

He nodded.

Another video.

My mother.

Another room.

Another year.

She looked thinner.

Older.

“I have moved Maya again.”

I closed my eyes.

“Every year?”

“Yes.”

She continued.

“They found us twice.”

I felt tears on my cheeks.

“I wanted to tell her.”

My mother looked at the camera.

“I wanted to tell my daughter who she was.”

She swallowed.

“But every time I thought it was safe, someone appeared.”

The screen went black.

Then another recording.

A man.

My father.

Alive.

Older.

His face thinner.

But unmistakable.

I stopped breathing.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Maya.”

My knees almost gave out.

Julian grabbed my arm.

My father continued.

“If you're watching this, then your mother failed to keep you hidden.”

He smiled.

“She will blame herself.”

A pause.

“Don't let her.”

His expression became serious.

“Everything I did was to protect you.”

I cried silently.

“I made terrible choices.”

He looked away.

“I trusted the wrong people.”

Then:

“I trusted Daniel.”

The screen froze.

I stared.

My father had known.

He had trusted Daniel.

And Daniel had betrayed him.

My father's final words were:

“If you ever find the Black Orchid account, don't open it.”

Julian paused the video.

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“Then keep going.”

“We need the rest first.”

I nodded.

There were 317 recordings.

My mother.

My father.

Employees.

Lawyers.

Bankers.

Security guards.

People I had never met.

All connected to one story.

The Sterling fortune hadn't disappeared.

It had been divided.

Hidden.

Protected.

And stolen.

Daniel Vance had taken control of several accounts after Alexander's disappearance.

But he had never gained access to one account.

Black Orchid.

Because my father had hidden the final key.

Inside the orchid ring.

I looked down at my hand.

“No.”

Julian looked at me.

“What?”

“The ring.”

I removed it.

The inside engraving.

17-04-09.

The number.

“It isn't a vault code.”

“What is it?”

I turned the ring beneath the light.

“There are letters.”

Tiny letters.

Almost invisible.

Julian took a magnifying glass.

His face changed.

“What does it say?”

He whispered:

B.O.

Black Orchid.

I stared.

The ring wasn't just proof of identity.

It was the key.

Then the phone rang.

Unknown.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A woman's voice.

“It's Vanessa.”

My body went still.

Julian immediately moved closer.

“Where are you?”

“Doesn't matter.”

“Where is Lily?”

“She isn't with me.”

“Then why are you calling?”

“Because you need to stop trusting Julian.”

I looked at him.

He frowned.

“Why?”

“Because he knows more than he's telling you.”

Julian's expression hardened.

“Put her on speaker.”

I did.

Vanessa continued.

“Your father didn't trust him.”

I looked at Julian.

“What does she mean?”

“She means exactly what she said.”

Julian reached for the phone.

I pulled it away.

“Let her talk.”

Vanessa whispered:

“I recorded everything because I knew no one would believe you.”

“What?”

“The cake.”

“The party.”

“Richard.”

“All of it.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed evidence.”

“For whom?”

“For you.”

I froze.

“You're saying you were trying to help me?”

“I was.”

“Then why did you laugh?”

“Because if Daniel saw me helping you, Lily would have died sooner.”

Silence.

My heart pounded.

“What do you know about Lily?”

Vanessa's voice broke.

“He knows where she is.”

“Who?”

“Daniel.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

Then she said something that made my blood freeze.

“Your daughter isn't the only child Daniel has taken.”

I stared.

“What?”

“He has been collecting leverage for twenty years.”

“Children?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because children grow up.”

“And when they do?”

“They inherit.”

My stomach turned.

“Who are these children?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Families with money.”

“Families like mine.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To control the inheritance.”

I closed my eyes.

Suddenly the entire pattern became clear.

Daniel didn't simply steal money.

He stole futures.

He manipulated heirs.

Marriages.

Trusts.

Children.

He didn't want to own the Sterling fortune.

He wanted to control who inherited it.

And I had just become the most valuable person in his system.

Vanessa gave me an address.

“Come alone.”

Julian immediately shook his head.

“No.”

I covered the phone.

“She says alone.”

“She wants you dead.”

“She saved my life.”

“We don't know that.”

I looked at him.

“You don't trust her.”

“No.”

“Why?”

His expression changed.

“Because I know what happened twenty-nine years ago.”

“What?”

“My father was supposed to protect Alexander.”

I stared.

“Your father?”

“Yes.”

“Daniel Vance?”

Julian nodded.

“He failed.”

“Or betrayed him.”

“I don't know.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it's true.”

I looked at the phone.

Vanessa was still waiting.

“Where?”

She gave me the address.

Then:

“Maya?”

“Yes?”

“If you want Lily back…”

“Yes?”

“Bring the ring.”

The line went dead.

Two hours later, I stood outside an abandoned church in Queens.

The ring was on my finger.

Julian stood several yards behind me.

I had told him I was going alone.

He had agreed.

I didn't believe him for one second.

The church doors opened.

Vanessa stepped outside.

She looked nothing like the woman from the birthday party.

No designer clothes.

No makeup.

No smile.

Just fear.

She looked at me.

“You came.”

“Where is my daughter?”

“She's alive.”

“That's not an answer.”

“I know.”

She glanced behind me.

“Where is Julian?”

I said nothing.

She smiled sadly.

“He won't tell you the truth.”

“What truth?”

She took a small memory card from her pocket.

“This.”

“What is it?”

“The original recording.”

“Of what?”

“The night your father disappeared.”

My heart stopped.

“You have it?”

“Yes.”

“Where did you get it?”

“Your mother.”

I took one step forward.

“Give it to me.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“First you need to know something.”

“What?”

She looked toward the road.

“Your father wasn't taken.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He went willingly.”

“Why?”

“Because he was protecting someone.”

“Who?”

She looked directly at me.

“You.”

I stared.

“That's impossible.”

“No.”

She swallowed.

“He made a deal.”

“With Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“What kind?”

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“He gave Daniel the fortune.”

I couldn't breathe.

“In exchange for what?”

She whispered:

“Your life.”

Then a gunshot cracked through the night.

Vanessa jerked.

Her body collapsed.

I screamed.

“Vanessa!”

Julian ran toward us.

I dropped beside her.

Blood spread across her shirt.

She grabbed my wrist.

Her eyes were fading.

“The recording…”

I leaned closer.

“Where?”

She whispered:

“Inside…”

Her breath caught.

“Inside what?”

She looked at the ring.

“Your mother's…”

Then her hand went limp.

I stared at her.

Julian pulled me backward.

“Move.”

Another shot hit the church wall.

We ran.

But before I reached the car, I looked down.

The memory card was still in my hand.

Vanessa had managed to give it to me.

I closed my fingers around it.

The woman who had recorded everything was dead.

But she had left me the one thing my family had spent twenty-nine years hiding.

The truth.

And as Julian drove away, I looked at the memory card.

I knew one thing.

Whatever was recorded on it would finally answer the question that had haunted me since childhood.

May you like

What really happened to my father?

And why had everyone been so desperate to keep me from finding out?
