PART 2 — The Bag Under the Sink

PART 2 — The Bag Under the Sink

Ofelia’s fingers froze inside the cabinet.

For the first time all night, she didn’t have a performance ready.

The investigators didn’t rush. They didn’t raise their voices. They simply watched her the way people watch evidence being recovered.

“Step away from the cabinet,” the forensic examiner said calmly.

Ofelia swallowed. “This is a private family matter—”

“No,” the domestic violence advocate interrupted. “It became a legal matter the moment the assault was admitted in front of witnesses.”

Julián took a step back.

Just one.

But it told everyone what they needed to know.

Valeria stood on the terrace, her hands pressed against the cold glass, watching her husband for the first time without fear blurring her vision.

Ernesto didn’t move.

He simply asked, “Where is the envelope?”

Silence.

Then Ofelia forced a laugh.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

The investigator crouched, pulled out the black bag, and opened it carefully.

Inside:

Bank statements.

A notarized property transfer attempt.

A forged signature comparison sheet.

And a USB drive labeled in handwriting Valeria recognized instantly.

Her mother-in-law’s neat, perfect script:

“In case Ernesto ever looks too closely.”

Valeria’s breath caught.

Julián finally spoke, voice thin. “This is insane. I didn’t— I didn’t know anything about—”

Ernesto turned slightly.

May you like

“You didn’t know you were committing fraud using my daughter’s identity?”

That silence was worse than an answer.
