Julián was handcuffed without resistance.

That surprised him most of all.

Ofelia kept repeating, “This is a misunderstanding,” even as she was led away, still holding onto the empty air where control used to be.

Valeria stayed on the terrace.

Until Ernesto walked out to her.

He didn’t touch her bruised face.

He just said, “You don’t have to go back there again.”

Her voice cracked. “I didn’t know how to leave.”

“I know,” he said.

A pause.

Then softer:

“That’s why I came before you asked me to.”

Inside, the cake melted under the heat of untouched candles.

Outside, Valeria finally exhaled a year she had been holding in her chest.
