Chapter 2 â The Midnight Board Meeting

Chapter 2 â The Midnight Board Meeting
The clock struck midnight.
But inside Escalante International Headquarters, the night had only just begun.
The city outside was asleep.
Millions of people rested peacefully, unaware that behind the walls of the tallest building downtown, an empire was being rewritten.
Not built.
Not expanded.
Reclaimed.
The boardroom lights illuminated a long black marble table.
Twenty-one executives sat around it.
Some had flown across continents.
Some had been awakened from private estates.
Some had interrupted vacations.
Nobody complained.
Because when the Escalante family called an emergency meeting...
The world listened.
At the head of the table sat me.
Mariana Escalante.
Not Andrew Mercer's wife.
Not the quiet woman who stood behind a successful man.
Not the woman who smiled while people underestimated her.
Tonight, I was exactly who I had been born to become.
The doors closed.
Silence filled the room.
My father sat beside me.
Victor Escalante.
The man who built the foundation I had spent years protecting.
The first person to speak was Daniel Reyes, the chairman of the legal division.
"Mrs. Escalante."
I nodded.
"Proceed."
He placed a thick folder on the table.
"The preliminary investigation is complete."
A screen behind him turned on.
Documents appeared.
Bank transfers.
Ownership agreements.
Corporate structures.
"The Mercer Group has been operating under a false perception of ownership."
Several executives exchanged looks.
Daniel continued.
"For years, Andrew Mercer presented himself as the sole creator and controller of his business empire."
A pause.
"That statement was inaccurate."
The room remained silent.
Because everyone knew.
But hearing it officially was different.
"The original capital."
"Expansion funding."
"International acquisition support."
"Strategic consulting."
"All originated from Escalante-controlled entities."
My fingers rested calmly on the table.
But inside...
I remembered every night I spent helping Andrew.
Every document I corrected.
Every crisis I solved.
Every time I told myself:
One day he will understand.
Daniel changed the slide.
A photograph appeared.
Andrew.
Standing on a stage.
A microphone in his hand.
A headline behind him:
ANDREW MERCER: THE MAN WHO BUILT A BILLION-DOLLAR EMPIRE
The room became colder.
"He believed the world saw him as a self-made businessman."
Daniel looked at me.
"But the truth is..."
"He was the face."
"You were the foundation."
My father remained silent.
But I knew what he was thinking.
He had warned me.
Years ago.
"Mariana."
His voice had been quiet.
"People who benefit from your kindness often mistake it for weakness."
I didn't listen.
Because love made people believe impossible things.
Daniel continued.
"Now we move to the second matter."
He pressed a button.
A new document appeared.
"Andrew Mercer personally approved several financial decisions without proper authorization."
I frowned.
"What decisions?"
Daniel looked serious.
"Luxury purchases."
"Private investments."
"Personal accounts."
"And transfers connected to Brenda Whitmore."
The room changed.
Even though I knew.
Even though I suspected.
Seeing the evidence still hurt.
A file opened.
Hundreds of pages.
Expenses.
Jewelry.
Properties.
Travel.
Gifts.
Everything he gave her.
Everything he took from me.
My father looked at me.
"Mariana."
I didn't move.
"I'm fine."
But was I?
The truth was complicated.
I didn't miss Andrew.
Not anymore.
But I missed the man I thought he was.
And sometimes...
Grieving someone who was still alive was the hardest kind of loss.
Daniel spoke again.
"The question before the board is simple."
"How do we proceed?"
Several executives looked toward me.
Waiting.
One of them spoke.
"Complete removal."
Another nodded.
"He damaged the company's reputation."
"He misrepresented ownership."
"He abused his authority."
The room filled with agreement.
I raised my hand.
Everyone became quiet.
"No."
The room froze.
My father looked at me.
"Mariana."
I looked around the table.
"We do not destroy him."
A few executives looked surprised.
"Why not?"
I answered calmly.
"Because destruction is easy."
A pause.
"Justice requires precision."
Nobody spoke.
"Andrew needs to face the consequences of his choices."
"But we will not become the kind of people who destroy others because we can."
My father studied me.
And for the first time that night...
I saw pride in his eyes.
Daniel nodded.
"Then what is your instruction?"
I looked at Andrew's company documents.
The empire he believed he owned.
The life he believed he controlled.
"Remove him from leadership."
"Freeze all unauthorized accounts."
"Return company control to legitimate ownership."
A pause.
"Then offer him one thing."
Daniel looked curious.
"What?"
"The truth."
Across the city...
Andrew sat alone in his office.
For the first time in years...
He didn't feel powerful.
His assistants were gone.
His calls were unanswered.
His access cards didn't work.
His executives were suddenly "unavailable."
The worst part wasn't losing control.
It was realizing how quickly people stopped pretending to respect him.
His phone rang.
Margaret.
He answered immediately.
"What is happening?"
Her voice was sharp.
"Don't ask me."
"You were the one who brought her into this family."
Andrew frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Silence.
Then:
"Who exactly is Mariana Escalante?"
The question made his stomach tighten.
"What are you talking about?"
Margaret's voice lowered.
"I searched her background."
"And?"
"There are missing years."
"Protected records."
"Private legal documents."
Andrew stood.
"She lied to me?"
The irony was almost unbelievable.
The woman who spent four years being accused of deception...
Had been hiding the truth that she owned everything.
Margaret continued:
"Andrew..."
"What?"
"You need to find out who your wife really is."
He ended the call.
For the first time...
He didn't think of Mariana as someone beneath him.
He thought of her as someone he never understood.
Meanwhile...
The board meeting continued.
At 1:47 a.m., the final document was presented.
A document I had never seen.
Daniel hesitated.
"Mrs. Escalante..."
"What?"
"This concerns your marriage."
My expression changed.
"My marriage?"
He placed the document in front of me.
A hidden agreement.
Signed four years ago.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
Andrew's signature.
"What is this?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"Before your wedding, Andrew signed an agreement with a private investment group."
I looked closer.
My heartbeat slowed.
The agreement stated:
If Andrew Mercer ever gained access to Escalante assets through marriage...
Control would transfer under specific conditions.
My blood turned cold.
"Who created this?"
Daniel looked at my father.
Victor's expression changed.
"I did."
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
"You knew?"
My father didn't avoid my eyes.
"Yes."
A thousand questions appeared at once.
"Why?"
His answer was quiet.
"Because I knew what Andrew wanted."
I stood.
"Father."
"He loved you."
"I believe that."
A pause.
"But he also loved what your name could give him."
The words hurt because part of me knew they were true.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Victor looked away.
"Because I wanted you to discover who he was without my influence."
I laughed softly.
A sad sound.
"And I did."
At 3:00 a.m....
The board meeting ended.
The first stage was complete.
Andrew's empire was no longer his.
But as everyone prepared to leave...
Daniel approached me.
"Mrs. Escalante."
"Yes?"
"There is one more thing."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He handed me another envelope.
Old.
Sealed.
"Where did this come from?"
"Your grandfather's private archive."
My grandfather.
William Escalante.
A man who had been dead for twelve years.
"Why now?"
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"Because the instructions said..."
He paused.
"...it should only be opened if someone you trusted betrayed you."
The room suddenly felt colder.
I broke the seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The first line made my breath stop.
Mariana,
If you are reading this, then the person you loved has finally shown you who he truly is.
I couldn't move.
The letter continued.
But before you decide what to do with him...
You must know the truth about why he entered your life.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
Because suddenly...
This was no longer just about Andrew.
Someone had planned something years ago.
Someone had known this moment would come.
And my grandfather...
Had been preparing for it before I even met my husband.
I looked at my father.
"Did you know about this letter?"
His silence was the answer.
The man who always protected me...
Had been keeping another secret.
Outside the windows...
The first light of dawn began to appear.
The world would wake up soon.
And when it did...
Andrew Mercer would discover he had lost his empire.
But I would discover something far more dangerous.
The betrayal had not started tonight.
May you like
It had started long before I walked down the aisle.
