Chapter 6 – The Mistress's Fall

Chapter 6 – The Mistress's Fall

Brenda Whitmore had always believed she was destined for a better life.

Not a normal life.

Not a quiet life.

A remarkable one.

From childhood, Brenda understood one thing clearly:

The world respected winners.

Nobody remembered the people who stood behind them.

Nobody celebrated the person who almost succeeded.

Nobody cared about the woman waiting in the shadows.

So Brenda made a decision early.

She would never be the woman standing behind someone.

She would be the woman everyone noticed.

And when she met Andrew Mercer...

She thought she had found her shortcut.

A powerful man.

A wealthy man.

A man whose name opened doors.

A man who could give her the life she always imagined.

She never asked how he built his empire.

She never questioned where the money came from.

She only saw the result.

Luxury.

Status.

Attention.

She saw Andrew as a throne.

And she believed she was the woman meant to sit beside him.

But Brenda made one mistake.

She underestimated the woman who built the throne.

The first sign that everything was collapsing came at 9:15 in the morning.

Brenda woke up expecting flowers.

A message from Andrew.

A promise that everything would be fixed.

Instead...

Her bank card was declined.

She stared at the payment terminal.

Confused.

"Try again."

The assistant looked uncomfortable.

"I'm sorry, Miss Whitmore."

"Again."

The machine beeped.

TRANSACTION DENIED.

Her face changed.

Impossible.

Andrew had never let her worry about money.

Designer clothes.

Jewelry.

Luxury apartments.

Private vacations.

Everything had always appeared effortlessly.

Because she never thought about where it came from.

She only thought about what she deserved.

She called Andrew immediately.

He answered after several rings.

"Andrew."

His voice was cold.

"What?"

She ignored the tone.

"My card isn't working."

Silence.

"Brenda..."

Something about the way he said her name made her nervous.

"What?"

"You need to stop spending."

She laughed.

"What?"

"You heard me."

Her expression hardened.

"Andrew, are you serious?"

For years, he loved when she spent money.

He loved proving he could provide.

He loved seeing other men notice what he had.

Now suddenly...

She was a problem.

"Things have changed."

The sentence terrified her.

"What does that mean?"

Andrew didn't answer.

Because he didn't know how to explain that he had spent years pretending to own something he never controlled.

By noon...

The news broke.

MERCER GROUP REMOVES ANDREW MERCER FROM LEADERSHIP

Brenda watched the broadcast.

At first...

She wasn't worried.

She believed Andrew would recover.

He always did.

Then the reporter said:

"Sources confirm that Mariana Escalante, Andrew Mercer's wife, is the controlling authority behind the company's financial structure."

The screen showed Mariana.

Calm.

Elegant.

Powerful.

Not the woman Brenda mocked.

Not the woman she believed she replaced.

Someone else.

Someone untouchable.

Brenda's hands became cold.

"No."

She whispered.

"No."

Because suddenly she understood.

The wife she laughed at...

Was the woman she should have feared.

That afternoon...

Brenda went to the mansion.

She expected Andrew to be there.

She expected him to comfort her.

Instead...

She found him sitting alone.

The room looked empty.

Even though nothing had been removed.

"What happened to you?"

Brenda asked.

Andrew looked at her.

"What happened to me?"

A bitter smile appeared.

"Everything."

She walked closer.

"We need a plan."

He looked tired.

"A plan for what?"

"To get your company back."

Andrew stared.

"My company?"

The words sounded strange.

Because he finally understood.

"Brenda..."

"What?"

"You still don't understand."

She frowned.

"Understand what?"

Andrew looked around the mansion.

"This was never mine."

Silence.

For the first time...

Brenda had no answer.

The next morning...

Brenda received a visitor.

A lawyer.

She recognized him.

Escalante legal division.

Her stomach tightened.

"What do you want?"

The lawyer remained polite.

"Ms. Whitmore, we are here regarding several assets currently connected to you."

She forced a smile.

"I don't know what you mean."

The lawyer opened a file.

Jewelry.

Properties.

Luxury purchases.

Everything Andrew had given her.

"These items were purchased using company resources without proper authorization."

Her smile disappeared.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying they are being reclaimed."

Her face went pale.

"Reclaimed?"

"Yes."

The lawyer closed the folder.

"Everything obtained through unauthorized transfers will be returned."

Brenda stood.

"You can't do this."

The lawyer looked at her.

"Actually..."

A pause.

"We can."

One week earlier...

Brenda had been walking through luxury stores believing she was becoming untouchable.

Now...

She stood in her apartment watching strangers remove expensive items.

Her designer bags.

Her jewelry.

Her artwork.

Her entire identity.

Gone.

That evening...

Brenda looked at herself in the mirror.

For the first time in years...

She saw the truth.

Without Andrew's money...

Who was she?

The question terrified her.

Meanwhile...

Andrew met with me.

Not because he wanted to.

Because he had no choice.

He entered my office quietly.

No arrogance.

No anger.

Only exhaustion.

"Brenda lost everything."

I looked at him.

"Yes."

He looked surprised.

"You don't care?"

I placed a document on the table.

"Andrew."

He looked at me.

"She made her choices."

Silence.

"Just like you made yours."

The words hit him.

Because he knew.

I wasn't talking about money.

I was talking about betrayal.

He sat down.

"I thought she loved me."

I almost laughed.

But I didn't.

Because once...

I thought the same thing.

"What did she love?"

I asked.

He looked confused.

"What?"

"What did she love?"

Silence.

"Your money?"

"Your power?"

"Your name?"

I looked at him.

"Or you?"

He had no answer.

Before leaving...

Andrew stopped.

"Mariana."

I looked up.

"I need to tell you something."

"What?"

His expression became serious.

"My mother knows why your grandfather knew her."

My heart slowed.

"How?"

"Because she told me."

I waited.

Andrew hesitated.

Then said:

"Your grandfather didn't just know my mother."

A pause.

"He saved her."

The room went silent.

"Saved her from what?"

Andrew looked at me.

"I don't know."

"But I know one thing."

"What?"

"My mother has been afraid of your family for twenty-five years."

That night...

Brenda sat alone in an apartment she could barely afford.

Andrew lost his empire.

She lost her luxury.

But neither of them understood the real disaster approaching.

Because the woman they betrayed...

Was about to discover the truth about why their families were connected.

And when that truth came out...

Money would not be the thing they feared losing.

May you like

It would be their names.
