Chapter 4 – Sunrise Changes Everything

Chapter 4 – Sunrise Changes Everything

The sunrise had always been my favorite part of the day.

Not because it was beautiful.

Not because it painted the sky with colors people wrote poems about.

But because sunrise represented something simple.

A beginning.

A chance to start again.

For years, I watched the sunrise from the balcony of Andrew's mansion.

The same balcony where I drank coffee every morning.

The same place where I planned business strategies while the world believed Andrew was working.

The same place where I once believed I was building a life.

That morning...

I watched it from my office.

Alone.

And for the first time...

I understood something.

The sun did not rise because anyone deserved another chance.

It rose because time continued.

With or without you.

My phone was already filled with messages.

Hundreds.

Investors.

Executives.

Journalists.

Employees.

Partners.

Everyone wanted answers.

The world had awakened.

And Andrew Mercer had finally learned the truth.

He was never the owner.

He was never the creator.

He was never the man standing above the empire.

He had been standing on top of a mountain someone else built.

And last night...

The person who built it removed the foundation.

At 7:00 a.m., the first press conference began.

Andrew appeared outside Mercer Group headquarters.

The same building where he had once walked proudly.

The same entrance where employees used to applaud him.

Today...

Nobody applauded.

Cameras surrounded him.

Questions exploded.

"Mr. Mercer, are you still the CEO?"

"Is it true Mariana Escalante controls the company?"

"Did you misrepresent your ownership?"

"Did your wife secretly finance your empire?"

Andrew stood there.

Silent.

For the first time in his career...

He had no prepared answer.

Because every answer made him look worse.

A reporter pushed forward.

"Mr. Mercer, did you know your wife was the real power behind your success?"

The world waited.

Andrew looked toward the cameras.

Then answered:

"No."

The honesty surprised everyone.

"No."

He repeated.

"I didn't know."

The reporters became louder.

"How could you not know your own wife?"

Andrew had no response.

Because that was the question he had been asking himself all night.

How could he spend four years beside someone...

And never truly see her?

Inside Escalante Headquarters...

I watched the interview from my office.

My father stood beside me.

"You feel sorry for him."

It wasn't a question.

I looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"Not anymore."

Victor studied me.

"You still care."

I didn't deny it.

"Caring doesn't mean forgiveness."

My father nodded.

Because he understood.

Forgiveness was not forgetting.

It was not allowing someone to hurt you again.

Sometimes forgiveness was simply refusing to let their cruelty change who you were.

At 10:00 a.m....

The emergency shareholders' meeting began.

This was the moment everyone had been waiting for.

The moment Andrew's supporters hoped he could fight back.

They expected anger.

Accusations.

A legal battle.

Instead...

I walked into the room.

The doors opened.

Every conversation stopped.

Some shareholders had never met me.

They had only heard rumors.

The hidden wife.

The mysterious investor.

The woman who controlled everything.

I took my seat.

"Good morning."

The chairman stood.

"Mrs. Escalante."

I nodded.

"Let's begin."

The first document appeared.

Ownership transfer.

The second.

Financial authority.

The third.

Corporate restructuring.

No shouting.

No drama.

No revenge.

Just facts.

By the end of the presentation...

Everyone understood.

Andrew Mercer had not lost an empire overnight.

He had never owned one.

One shareholder raised his hand.

"Mrs. Escalante."

"Yes?"

"May I ask something?"

"Of course."

"Why did you allow Mr. Mercer to receive all the credit?"

The room became quiet.

It was the question everyone wanted answered.

I looked at the table.

At the documents.

At the history.

"Because I believed marriage meant partnership."

A pause.

"I believed his success was our success."

Another pause.

"But somewhere along the way..."

I looked up.

"He forgot there was an 'us.'"

Nobody spoke.

Meanwhile...

Andrew returned home.

Or what he believed was home.

The mansion was silent.

Brenda was waiting.

The moment she saw him...

She walked toward him.

"Andrew."

He didn't answer.

"What's happening?"

He looked at her.

And for the first time...

He didn't see his future.

He saw his mistake.

"You knew."

Brenda froze.

"Knew what?"

"About Mariana."

Her expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Andrew noticed.

"You knew something."

She quickly smiled.

"Andrew, don't be ridiculous."

But he was no longer the man who believed everything she said.

"How long?"

Silence.

"How long did you know she had money?"

Brenda looked away.

That was enough.

Andrew laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

"Of course."

"What?"

"Of course you knew."

Brenda stepped closer.

"Andrew, listen—"

"No."

He backed away.

"You never loved me."

Her expression hardened.

"Don't be dramatic."

The words hit him.

Because they sounded exactly like the way he had treated Mariana.

Brenda continued:

"You had power."

"You had money."

"You had everything."

Andrew stared at her.

"And you wanted more."

She didn't deny it.

That was when he understood.

The two people he trusted most...

Had both been using him.

That evening...

I returned to my old house.

Not Andrew's mansion.

Mine.

The Escalante family estate.

A place I had avoided for years.

My childhood home.

My father was waiting.

"You came back."

I nodded.

"I think I needed to."

We walked through the garden.

"When your mother died..."

My father stopped.

I looked at him.

"You never told me everything."

He sighed.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because your mother knew something."

My heart slowed.

"About Andrew?"

"No."

He looked at me.

"About his family."

The air changed.

"Margaret?"

He nodded.

"Your grandfather knew her before Andrew was born."

The same secret.

Again.

"Why?"

My father looked toward the old family house.

"Because Margaret wasn't who everyone believed she was."

That night...

I opened my grandfather's letter again.

The final pages were hidden.

A section I hadn't noticed before.

My grandfather's handwriting continued:

"Mariana, if Andrew ever discovers the truth, remember this..."

"Not every enemy enters your life carrying a weapon."

"Some enter carrying love."

I stopped reading.

Because one sentence followed.

"The greatest betrayal often comes from the person who knows exactly where your heart is weakest."

I looked at the photograph.

Margaret.

My grandfather.

The hidden connection.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice spoke.

Older.

Calm.

"Mariana Escalante?"

"Who is this?"

A pause.

"Someone who knew your grandfather."

My grip tightened.

"How?"

The woman whispered:

"Because I was there when he made the decision that changed both our families."

My heart raced.

"Who are you?"

The answer came quietly.

"Margaret Mercer."

Silence.

Before I could speak...

She said:

"You think Andrew betrayed you."

A pause.

"You are wrong."

The line went silent.

I stared at my phone.

Because after everything...

After reclaiming my empire.

After exposing Andrew.

After winning the battle I thought mattered most...

I realized something terrifying.

The truth I had been fighting for...

Was only the beginning.

And tomorrow morning...

May you like

The sunrise would reveal a secret powerful enough to change everything.
