Chapter 2 – The Video Nobody Was Supposed to See

Chapter 2 – The Video Nobody Was Supposed to See
Claire barely noticed the ambulance weaving through the rain-soaked roads of Napa Valley.
The paramedic seated across from her asked simple questions.
"Can you tell me your name?"
"Claire Bennett Caldwell."
"Do you know what day it is?"
"Saturday."
"Any dizziness?"
"A little."
The medic nodded while shining a light into her pupils.
"You'll probably need several stitches. Try not to fall asleep yet."
Claire answered automatically.
Her mind wasn't inside the ambulance.
It was inside her coat pocket.
Wrapped around the tiny black flash drive Maya had risked everything to give her.
The Emergency Room
By the time the doctors finished stitching the deep cut along Claire's temple, it was nearly one o'clock in the morning.
The emergency physician placed twelve neat stitches beneath her hairline.
"You were lucky."
Claire looked up.
"Lucky?"
"Another inch lower..."
He pointed toward her eye.
"...and you could have suffered permanent damage."
She thanked him quietly.
The doctor hesitated before leaving.
"One more thing."
"Yes?"
"The deputy told me this may become a criminal case."
Claire nodded.
"It will."
"If anyone pressures you to change your statement..."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"Don't."
Forty-Seven Missed Calls
After the nurse finally discharged her, Claire sat alone in the hospital waiting area.
She turned on her phone.
The screen lit up instantly.
47 Missed Calls
Thirty-two from Adrian.
Nine from Margaret.
Three from Daniel.
Two from Richard.
One from an unknown number.
Then the text messages began arriving one after another.
Adrian:
You completely overreacted.
Another.
We can fix this if you stop talking to the police.
Another.
Answer your phone.
Margaret's messages sounded calmer.
Almost affectionate.
Sweetheart, families forgive each other.
Don't let outsiders destroy your marriage.
Richard's message was only one sentence.
Think very carefully before opening old wounds.
Claire frowned.
Old wounds?
What did that even mean?
Before she could think further, another message appeared.
Unknown Number.
Don't open the flash drive.
Her heart stopped.
She had never told anyone about it.
Not the police.
Not the doctors.
No one.
Someone was watching.
Home... But Not Safe
Claire refused to return to the Caldwell estate.
Instead, she drove straight to her Mission Bay condo in San Francisco.
The familiar building usually made her feel secure.
Tonight...
Every shadow looked different.
She checked the parking garage twice before entering the elevator.
Locked the condo door.
Then locked it again.
She closed every curtain.
Turned off every unnecessary light.
Only then did she walk into her home office.
The flash drive rested in her palm.
Small.
Ordinary.
Completely silent.
Yet somehow...
It felt heavier than anything she had ever held.
Maya's Password
Claire inserted the drive into her laptop.
Nothing happened.
A password window appeared.
She frowned.
Of course.
Maya wouldn't leave something this dangerous unprotected.
Claire leaned back, thinking.
What would Maya choose?
Anniversary?
Children's birthdays?
No.
Too obvious.
Then she remembered something Maya had whispered once during a family barbecue months earlier.
"Sometimes the truth is hidden in plain sight."
Claire's eyes drifted toward the engagement photo hanging beside her desk.
The date.
June 14, 2019.
On a sudden impulse, she typed:
06142019
The screen paused.
Then unlocked.
Claire felt her stomach tighten.
CASE 2019
Only one folder appeared.
Black background.
White letters.
CASE 2019 — DO NOT DELETE
Her cursor hovered over it.
She clicked.
Inside were dozens of files.
Videos.
Audio recordings.
Photographs.
Financial documents.
Every file had a date.
Every date stretched back over five years.
Claire whispered,
"My God..."
This wasn't random evidence.
Someone had built a case.
Video One
She opened the oldest recording.
The footage came from another security camera.
Time stamp:
August 12, 2019.
The camera overlooked the Caldwell mansion kitchen.
A young housekeeper accidentally dropped an expensive crystal vase.
It shattered.
Claire expected yelling.
Instead...
Adrian entered.
He grabbed the terrified young woman by the wrist so hard she cried out.
"You stupid girl!"
She apologized repeatedly.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"It slipped."
Adrian slapped her across the face.
Hard.
The sound echoed through the kitchen.
Claire instinctively covered her own mouth.
The housekeeper stumbled backward into a cabinet.
She couldn't have been older than twenty.
Margaret calmly walked into the room.
Claire waited for her to stop her son.
Instead Margaret looked at the frightened employee and said,
"You should thank Mr. Caldwell."
The young woman stared in confusion.
Margaret smiled.
"He could have fired you."
The video ended.
Claire sat frozen.
Her injury suddenly throbbed.
Tonight hadn't been the first time Adrian had become violent.
It wasn't even close.
Video Two
Her hands shook as she opened the next file.
Time stamp:
February 3, 2020.
The recording showed Richard Caldwell standing inside his study.
Across from him sat a uniformed police officer.
Richard slid a thick envelope across the desk.
The officer didn't even pretend to refuse it.
"You understand."
Richard spoke calmly.
"My son has a promising future."
The officer nodded.
"The report disappears."
"No charges."
"No record."
Claire's pulse quickened.
"What report?"
The answer came seconds later.
Richard handed over another document.
Across the top...
Claire read only four words before the paper disappeared.
Domestic Violence Incident Report
Her breathing became uneven.
Adrian had been investigated before.
And someone had buried it.
The Third File
Claire clicked another video.
This one lasted less than thirty seconds.
A blonde woman hurried through the mansion hallway carrying two suitcases.
She looked frightened.
She glanced behind her repeatedly.
Then the front door opened.
Adrian blocked the exit.
The camera had no audio.
But Claire watched the woman plead.
Watched Adrian grab her arm.
Watched Daniel pull the curtains closed.
The recording abruptly stopped.
The file name read:
ELENA — LAST DAY
Claire whispered,
"Who are you?"
Maya Calls
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
Claire answered cautiously.
"Hello?"
"It's me."
Maya's voice was barely audible.
"Don't say my name."
Claire immediately lowered her own voice.
"I'm alone."
"Are you sure?"
Claire looked around the dark condo.
"Yes."
A long silence followed.
Finally Maya asked,
"Did you watch any of it?"
Claire swallowed.
"Three videos."
"You know now."
"No."
Claire stared at the computer screen.
"I know almost nothing."
"What happened to that woman?"
Another pause.
Then Maya whispered,
"They said she quit."
"But she never came back for her paycheck."
Claire frowned.
"You knew?"
"I knew enough to be afraid."
"So why now?"
Maya's breathing became shaky.
"Because tonight..."
"You looked exactly like she did."
The Hidden Folder
Before ending the call, Maya said one last thing.
"There are files inside other files."
Claire frowned.
"What?"
"Some folders are hidden."
"You have to enable hidden files."
The call disconnected immediately.
Claire followed Maya's instructions.
Within seconds...
Three additional folders appeared.
They had been invisible before.
One was labeled:
Financials
Another:
Audio
The third simply read:
PRIVATE
Claire clicked it.
Only one video.
No date.
No title.
She pressed play.
The recording began inside what appeared to be the mansion's wine cellar.
The image was dark.
Someone was secretly filming through a crack in a wooden door.
Richard Caldwell stood with Adrian and Daniel.
Another woman entered.
Claire immediately recognized her.
The blonde housekeeper.
Elena.
She looked terrified.
Richard calmly closed the door behind her.
The video cut off.
Only ten seconds long.
Claire frowned.
Why end there?
Then she noticed something.
The file size.
Ten seconds couldn't possibly require nearly two gigabytes of storage.
Something was wrong.
She right-clicked the file.
Properties.
The video length refreshed.
Not ten seconds.
Two hours, seventeen minutes.
The playback bar hadn't loaded completely.
Claire's heartbeat accelerated.
She dragged the timeline forward.
The screen froze for a moment.
Then the rest of the recording appeared.
Claire stared in horror.
The wine cellar door was now locked from the outside.
Elena was trapped inside.
She pounded desperately against the heavy wooden door.
Screaming.
Begging.
Crying.
No one came.
The camera continued recording.
Minute after minute.
Hour after hour.
Claire's hands began trembling uncontrollably.
Then, at exactly 1 hour, 53 minutes, the cellar door slowly opened.
A man stepped inside.
Not Adrian.
Not Richard.
Someone else.
He wore an expensive charcoal-gray suit.
The same suit.
The same cold expression.
The very same stranger Claire had seen speaking to Margaret outside the mansion after the police arrived.
He looked directly toward the hidden camera.
And smiled.
As if he knew someone would eventually watch the video.
May you like
Then he spoke five chilling words that made Claire's blood run cold.
"Delete the body this time."
