Chapter 5 – The Divorce Turns Ugly

Chapter 5 – The Divorce Turns Ugly
The memory card felt impossibly light in Claire's palm.
FOR ELENA ONLY.
Three handwritten words.
Nothing else.
No date.
No initials.
No explanation.
Maya stared at it as though it were a live grenade.
"I never watched it," she whispered.
Claire searched her face.
"Why?"
"Because if it contained what I feared..."
Maya swallowed hard.
"...then I couldn't pretend anymore."
For several seconds, neither woman moved.
The sounds of the late-night coffee shop faded into the background.
The espresso machine hissed.
A waitress laughed with another customer.
Outside, rain tapped softly against the windows.
Ordinary life continued.
Yet Claire knew hers had crossed a point of no return.
One More Recording
Claire and Maya drove separately to Rebecca Lin's law office.
It was nearly midnight, but Rebecca was still there, reviewing documents beneath the glow of her desk lamp.
When Claire placed the memory card on the desk, Rebecca frowned.
"Where did this come from?"
"Maya."
Rebecca looked toward her.
"Have you watched it?"
Maya shook her head.
"No."
Jack Donovan arrived twenty minutes later carrying a portable forensic laptop.
"No internet connection," he explained.
"If there's malware or tracking software, it stays isolated."
He carefully inserted the card.
A single file appeared.
No name.
No thumbnail.
Length:
00:04:37
Jack clicked Play.
Static filled the screen.
Then...
A shaky image appeared.
Someone was filming from inside a moving vehicle.
The camera slowly focused.
Claire gasped.
The Caldwell estate.
Nighttime.
Rain falling.
The timestamp read:
October 18, 2021.
The date Elena disappeared.
The recording shifted.
A woman sat in the back seat.
Her wrists were bound.
A strip of gray duct tape covered her mouth.
Bruises darkened both sides of her face.
Even through the grainy image...
Claire recognized her.
Elena.
She was alive.
At least...
She had been that night.
The camera turned.
Richard Caldwell was driving.
Adrian sat in the passenger seat.
Neither man realized they were being recorded.
Richard spoke first.
"We should've handled this weeks ago."
Adrian slammed his fist against the dashboard.
"She shouldn't have gone into my office."
Elena let out a muffled cry.
Richard glanced into the rearview mirror.
"Stop making noise."
The recording suddenly cut to black.
Nobody in the office breathed.
Rebecca slowly closed the laptop.
"This changes everything."
Jack nodded.
"No."
"It changes nothing."
Everyone looked at him.
"If she's alive today..."
"We still have to find her."
Divorce Papers
The following morning, Claire filed for divorce.
Irreconcilable differences.
Domestic violence.
Request for a permanent protective order.
Exclusive possession of her separate property.
Rebecca personally delivered the petition to the Napa County courthouse.
Less than three hours later...
Adrian received the documents.
His response came almost immediately.
Claire's phone rang.
She rejected the call.
It rang again.
Rejected.
Again.
Again.
Finally...
A voicemail arrived.
His voice sounded calm.
Too calm.
"You're making the biggest mistake of your life."
Another message followed seconds later.
"You think one argument ends a marriage?"
Then another.
"You'll regret listening to strangers."
Claire deleted every voicemail without replying.
The Smear Campaign
By afternoon, social media exploded.
Anonymous accounts posted stories claiming Claire had become "greedy."
Others claimed she suffered from emotional instability.
One article alleged she wanted Adrian's family fortune.
Claire laughed bitterly.
She owned more personal assets than Adrian did.
Her condo.
Her investment portfolio.
Her retirement accounts.
Everything had been built before she met him.
Rebecca placed another document on the table.
"They've already contacted three gossip websites."
Claire sighed.
"Of course they have."
"They're trying to destroy your credibility before the criminal investigation gains momentum."
Jack looked up from his phone.
"It gets worse."
He turned the screen toward them.
Someone had leaked Claire's home address online.
Unwanted Visitors
That evening, reporters gathered outside her Mission Bay building.
Neighbors peeked through their curtains.
Cameras followed anyone entering or leaving.
Building security escorted Claire through a private entrance.
As the elevator doors opened on her floor...
She found a bouquet of white lilies sitting outside her condo.
No card.
No sender.
Jack, who had insisted on accompanying her, immediately stopped her.
"Don't touch it."
He photographed the flowers first.
Then carefully lifted the arrangement with latex gloves.
Hidden beneath the ribbon was a folded note.
Three words.
You're already alone.
Claire stared at the handwriting.
Rebecca compared it to Adrian's old birthday cards.
Not a match.
Jack frowned.
"This wasn't meant to apologize."
"It was meant to intimidate."
The Financial Attack
The next morning, Claire tried to pay a contractor renovating her condo's guest bathroom.
Her banking app displayed an unexpected message.
Transaction Declined.
She frowned.
There was more than enough money in the account.
She called the bank.
After several minutes on hold, a manager explained.
"Your joint checking account has been frozen following a dispute."
Claire remained calm.
"My salary doesn't go into the joint account."
The manager hesitated.
"No."
"But someone filed paperwork alleging unusual financial activity."
Rebecca immediately requested copies.
An hour later, the documents arrived.
Claire stared in disbelief.
Someone had claimed she was attempting to hide marital assets.
The signature at the bottom...
Was Adrian's.
Rebecca smiled coldly.
"He just made another mistake."
"Why?"
"Because your condo isn't marital property."
She opened the prenuptial agreement.
Every page had been notarized years before the wedding.
The condo.
Claire's investments.
Her retirement savings.
All remained her separate property.
Adrian couldn't legally claim a single dollar.
Rebecca looked almost amused.
"He spent years believing he could pressure you into giving it away."
Claire nodded.
"And now?"
"Now the law is reminding him it was never his."
Twenty Witnesses
Detective Lisa Hernandez visited Rebecca's office later that afternoon.
She carried a thick folder.
"We've finished interviewing everyone at the dinner."
Claire already suspected the outcome.
"Let me guess."
"They all told the same story."
Lisa nodded.
"Almost word for word."
Claire wasn't surprised.
"What about the camera?"
Lisa smiled for the first time.
"Our forensic unit recovered the hard drive."
Claire's heart skipped.
"And?"
"We're restoring the footage."
Rebecca leaned forward.
"How long?"
"Forty-eight hours."
Silence settled over the room.
For the first time...
The Caldwell family's carefully rehearsed story had begun to crack.
Adrian Loses Control
That evening, Adrian appeared outside Claire's condo.
Security cameras captured him pacing near the entrance.
He wasn't allowed within one hundred yards under the temporary protective order.
Yet there he was.
Waiting.
Building security immediately called police.
By the time officers arrived...
Adrian had driven away.
Minutes later, Claire received another text.
You think a piece of paper can keep us apart?
Rebecca immediately forwarded it to Detective Hernandez.
"Violation of the protective order," the detective said.
"He just gave us another charge."
Maya's Decision
Late that night, Maya knocked quietly on Claire's door.
She carried one small suitcase.
Nothing else.
Claire opened the door in surprise.
"Maya?"
Maya looked exhausted.
"I left."
Claire stepped aside immediately.
"What happened?"
"Daniel found out I gave you the flash drive."
Claire's heart sank.
"Did he hurt you?"
"No."
"But he said if I ever spoke to you again..."
She looked down at the wedding ring still on her finger.
"...our marriage was over."
Claire quietly closed the door behind her.
"And what did you say?"
Maya slowly removed the ring.
Placed it on the kitchen counter.
Then looked Claire directly in the eye.
"I told him..."
"It should have ended the day Elena disappeared."
Claire embraced her without saying a word.
For the first time in years...
Maya allowed herself to cry.
A Knock Before Dawn
At four o'clock the next morning, Jack called.
His voice was unusually urgent.
"Claire."
"What happened?"
"I've got something."
"What?"
"The bank records from Elena's account."
Claire sat upright.
"Tell me."
"There was another deposit."
"When?"
"Yesterday."
Claire frowned.
"That's impossible."
Jack's next words sent a chill through the room.
"It wasn't cash."
"It wasn't payroll."
"It was a wire transfer."
"From Caldwell Family Holdings."
Claire's pulse quickened.
"They're still paying her."
Jack's voice dropped.
"Or..."
"...they're paying someone who knows exactly what happened to her."
The call ended.
Claire looked at the sunrise beginning to glow beyond her condo windows.
Somewhere...
Someone connected to Elena was still receiving money.
May you like
And if that person could be found...
The entire Caldwell empire might finally begin to collapse.
