Chapter 3 – The Missing Housekeeper

Chapter 3 – The Missing Housekeeper

Claire didn't breathe.

She couldn't.

The video froze on the face of the man in the charcoal-gray suit.

His expression wasn't angry.

It wasn't nervous.

It was calm.

Almost bored.

As if ordering someone to "delete the body" was no different than discussing tomorrow's weather.

The recording ended.

The laptop screen went black.

Claire stared at her own reflection.

The fresh stitches along her temple.

The dried blood in her hair.

The exhaustion in her eyes.

For the first time since leaving the Caldwell estate...

She wasn't thinking about divorce anymore.

She was thinking about murder.

No Going Back

She checked the clock.

2:43 a.m.

Every instinct told her to call the police immediately.

Yet another voice inside her warned her to wait.

Someone had already texted her.

Don't open the flash drive.

Someone knew she had it.

Someone knew exactly what was inside.

If the Caldwell family had managed to bury evidence for years...

Who could she trust?

Claire unplugged the flash drive and slipped it into a small fireproof safe hidden beneath the false bottom of her bedroom closet.

She memorized the combination once more.

Then changed it.

Twice.

Only after locking the safe did she return to her desk.

She opened a new document and began writing everything she remembered.

Dates.

Names.

Conversations.

Every detail from the dinner.

Every word Margaret had spoken.

Every threat Adrian had made.

If anything happened to her...

Someone needed a record.

Morning Headlines

Claire woke after less than three hours of restless sleep.

Her phone buzzed nonstop.

News alerts.

Social media notifications.

Emails from coworkers.

One headline immediately caught her attention.

TECH EXECUTIVE ARRESTED AFTER DOMESTIC INCIDENT AT NAPA ESTATE

The article avoided mentioning her name.

Adrian's family had clearly moved fast.

The story described the assault as an "alleged family dispute."

Anonymous sources claimed alcohol may have been involved.

Claire laughed bitterly.

She had drunk exactly half a glass of sparkling water.

The smear campaign had already begun.

Her Lawyer's Advice

By noon, Claire sat across from her longtime attorney, Rebecca Lin.

Rebecca had handled the purchase of Claire's Mission Bay condo years earlier.

She had also drafted the prenuptial agreement Adrian had reluctantly signed before their wedding.

Rebecca listened without interrupting.

Only when Claire finished did she ask one question.

"Did anyone besides Maya know about the flash drive?"

"I don't think so."

Rebecca leaned back.

"Then assume they do now."

Claire frowned.

"How?"

"If Maya was watched..."

Rebecca didn't finish the sentence.

She didn't have to.

Claire understood.

Someone inside the Caldwell family was always watching.

Rebecca folded her hands.

"I want you to promise me something."

"What?"

"You won't open another file alone."

Claire hesitated.

"I already have."

Rebecca sighed.

"Then from this point forward..."

"...everything gets copied."

"Three backups."

"Encrypted."

"And one goes directly to my office."

Claire nodded.

For the first time in twenty-four hours...

She felt like someone was standing beside her instead of against her.

Elena Morales

That afternoon they carefully examined the files again.

Rebecca noticed something Claire had overlooked.

Every video involving the blonde housekeeper used the same name.

Elena Morales

Rebecca searched public employment records.

Nothing.

State licensing records.

Nothing.

Tax filings.

Nothing after 2021.

It was as though Elena had vanished.

Claire whispered,

"People don't just disappear."

Rebecca looked at her.

"They do."

"When someone makes them."

The Investigator

Rebecca made one phone call.

An hour later, a man in his early fifties walked into her office.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

Weathered face.

His name was Jack Donovan.

Former homicide detective.

Now one of California's most respected private investigators.

He listened to Claire's story without interrupting.

When she finished, he asked only,

"Do you believe the woman is dead?"

Claire thought carefully.

"I don't know."

Jack nodded.

"Good."

"Why?"

"Because assumptions solve fewer cases than evidence."

He accepted a copy of the videos.

"I'll start with Elena."

Before leaving, he turned back.

"If someone wanted her forgotten..."

"They probably changed more than her address."

A Perfect Employee

Two days later, Jack called.

"I found something."

Claire and Rebecca met him in a quiet café overlooking the bay.

Jack spread several photographs across the table.

One showed Elena smiling in a housekeeping uniform.

Another showed her receiving an employee award.

"She worked for the Caldwells almost four years."

Claire studied the photographs.

"Any disciplinary problems?"

Jack shook his head.

"None."

"Perfect attendance."

"No criminal record."

"No debt."

"No reason to suddenly disappear."

Rebecca frowned.

"What about family?"

Jack slid over another document.

"Only one person."

"Her younger sister."

Claire picked up the file.

The sister's name was Isabella Morales.

Current address:

Unknown.

The Official Story

Jack had also obtained a copy of Elena's resignation letter.

Claire read it carefully.

The words felt strangely robotic.

I have decided to pursue opportunities outside California.

I appreciate the Caldwell family's generosity.

I leave on excellent terms.

At the bottom sat Elena's signature.

Rebecca frowned.

"Something's wrong."

Claire looked closer.

"What?"

Rebecca pulled another document from the file.

Elena's employment contract.

The signatures didn't match.

Not even close.

Someone had forged the resignation.

The Last Paycheck

Jack smiled faintly.

"That's not the interesting part."

He placed a bank statement on the table.

Claire leaned forward.

The account belonged to Elena.

Payroll deposits continued...

For six months after she supposedly resigned.

Claire blinked.

"That makes no sense."

Jack nodded.

"Exactly."

"If she quit..."

"Who was collecting the money?"

The Neighbor

Jack had visited Elena's last known apartment.

The building manager remembered her immediately.

"Sweet girl."

"Always paid rent early."

"But one night..."

Jack opened his notebook.

"The neighbor heard screaming."

Claire's pulse quickened.

"The next morning..."

"Two expensive black SUVs arrived."

"Three men carried several boxes downstairs."

"And Elena was never seen again."

Rebecca asked,

"Did anyone call the police?"

Jack gave a humorless laugh.

"The landlord said it was 'a private family matter.'"

Claire stared out the café window.

How many times had those words been used to bury the truth?

Someone Was Watching

That evening, Claire returned home feeling more unsettled than ever.

She parked inside the secured garage.

As she stepped out of her car...

She noticed something unusual.

A black sedan sat two rows away.

Its engine was running.

The windows were tinted too dark to see inside.

She memorized the license plate.

Walked toward the elevator.

The sedan remained where it was.

Only when the elevator doors closed did the car slowly pull away.

Claire immediately texted the plate number to Rebecca and Jack.

Less than ten minutes later, Jack called.

"Don't go anywhere alone."

"Why?"

"The plate belongs to a rental company."

"So?"

"It was rented yesterday."

"By whom?"

Jack's voice became unusually serious.

"A corporation."

"What corporation?"

He paused.

"There isn't one."

"The paperwork is fake."

The Storage Unit

The next morning, Jack called again.

"I found one more thing."

"What?"

"Elena rented a storage unit."

Claire's heart raced.

"Is it still there?"

"It shouldn't be."

"But someone kept paying the monthly fee."

They drove to the storage facility that afternoon.

The manager unlocked Unit 314.

Dust floated through the stale air.

There wasn't much inside.

A suitcase.

Two cardboard boxes.

An old bicycle.

Claire opened the suitcase first.

Women's clothing.

A framed photo of Elena with a smiling young girl—likely Isabella.

Then Rebecca opened one of the boxes.

Inside lay dozens of notebooks.

Diaries.

Every page carefully dated.

Jack picked up the final notebook.

Tucked inside the back cover was a folded receipt.

Not for rent.

Not for groceries.

For a bank deposit.

Dated three weeks ago.

Claire frowned.

"That's impossible."

Jack slowly turned the receipt over.

Printed across the top was the name of the receiving account.

ELENA MORALES

Silence filled the storage unit.

Rebecca looked at Claire.

"The account is still active."

Jack nodded.

"And someone has been using it."

Claire's heartbeat quickened.

"If someone is depositing money..."

Rebecca finished the thought.

"Then either Elena is alive..."

Jack looked toward the open storage-unit door.

"...or someone desperately wants the world to believe she is."

At that exact moment, the facility manager came running down the corridor, his face pale.

"Excuse me!"

Jack turned.

"What is it?"

The manager struggled to catch his breath.

"There's... there's a woman outside asking for Unit 314."

Claire frowned.

"What woman?"

The manager swallowed hard.

May you like

"She said..."

"...her name is Elena Morales."
