CHAPTER 10

CHAPTER 10
The Trial Of Eleanor Whitmore
Justice was never as simple as people imagined.
People believed the truth would automatically win.
They believed once the evidence appeared, the guilty would fall.
But powerful people did not surrender easily.
They fought.
They lied.
They created doubt.
And Eleanor Whitmore had spent her entire life mastering one skill above all others.
Survival.
Six weeks after the wedding night, the courtroom was filled.
Reporters stood outside.
Cameras flashed.
The Whitmore name was everywhere.
But this time, not because of success.
Because of scandal.
The woman who had once hosted charity galas and appeared on magazine covers was now sitting at the defendant's table.
Eleanor Whitmore.
She wore a simple black suit.
Her hair was perfectly arranged.
Her posture was flawless.
Anyone seeing her for the first time might have believed she was innocent.
That was her greatest weapon.
Appearance.
Across the courtroom sat Maura.
Beside her was Adrian.
And in Adrian's arms was Lily.
The child who had changed everything.
Maura looked at Eleanor.
She expected to feel anger.
Hatred.
A desire for revenge.
But she felt something else.
Peace.
Because for the first time...
Eleanor could not rewrite the story.
The prosecutor stood.
"Your Honor, the defendant is accused of intentionally trapping a pregnant woman inside a locked room during her wedding celebration, removing her communication device, and creating circumstances that placed both mother and child in danger."
The courtroom became silent.
Eleanor's lawyer immediately stood.
"My client denies these accusations."
He turned toward the jury.
"This case is built on emotion."
A pause.
"Not facts."
Maura heard the familiar strategy.
Make the victim seem dramatic.
Make the truth seem complicated.
Make people doubt.
But this time...
they had evidence.
The first witness was called.
The hotel security director.
Marcus Hale.
He walked to the stand.
The prosecutor approached.
"Mr. Hale, did your system contain security footage from the wedding night?"
"Yes."
"Was that footage altered?"
"No."
"Did it show Eleanor Whitmore entering the bridal bathroom?"
"Yes."
"Did it show her leaving without the bride?"
"Yes."
The courtroom watched the footage.
The silence was overwhelming.
No dramatic music.
No emotional speech.
Just reality.
A woman entering.
A woman leaving.
A door being locked.
Facts.
Eleanor remained expressionless.
But Maura noticed something.
Her hands were shaking.
Just slightly.
Then came the unexpected moment.
The defense lawyer stood.
"Mr. Hale, are you aware that security footage can be misunderstood?"
Marcus frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"You cannot prove what happened inside the room."
The lawyer smiled.
"You only know what happened outside."
The courtroom became tense.
A clever argument.
The footage showed Eleanor entering.
It showed her leaving.
But it did not show her thoughts.
The lawyer continued.
"Isn't it possible my client was concerned for Mrs. Whitmore?"
"No."
Marcus answered immediately.
Everyone looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because I reviewed the audio."
Silence.
The lawyer froze.
"The audio?"
Marcus nodded.
"The original recording contained sound."
The prosecutor smiled.
"Play it."
The courtroom watched.
The video began.
Maura's voice.
Weak.
Afraid.
"Please call Adrian."
Then Eleanor's voice.
Cold.
"You are making a scene."
The courtroom became still.
Then the final words.
"You were never supposed to become the center of this family."
A wave moved through the room.
Even the judge looked disturbed.
Because those were not the words of someone trying to help.
Those were the words of someone trying to control.
But Eleanor was not finished.
Her lawyer called his next witness.
"Adrian Whitmore."
The courtroom reacted.
Maura looked at him.
Adrian stood.
He knew this moment would come.
He walked to the stand.
The lawyer approached.
"Mr. Whitmore, do you love your mother?"
A strange question.
But Adrian answered honestly.
"Yes."
The lawyer nodded.
"Did your mother raise you?"
"Yes."
"Did she sacrifice for you?"
Adrian paused.
"Yes."
"So is it possible this entire situation is a misunderstanding caused by family conflict?"
The courtroom waited.
Adrian looked at Eleanor.
The woman who taught him everything.
The woman who hurt his wife.
The woman who nearly destroyed his family.
Then he looked at Maura.
The woman who trusted him even after he failed her.
"No."
The answer was immediate.
The lawyer frowned.
"Mr. Whitmore?"
Adrian continued.
"My mother spent my entire life teaching me that family must be protected."
A pause.
"But she forgot the most important part."
The courtroom was silent.
"Family is not protected by hurting innocent people."
Maura lowered her eyes.
Because those words meant everything.
Then came the final witness.
A man entered the courtroom.
Everyone turned.
Maura froze.
Because she recognized him.
The man from the security footage.
The man everyone believed was dead.
The former assistant of William Ellington.
His name was Daniel Cross.
Eleanor's face changed.
Only for a moment.
But everyone saw it.
Fear.
Daniel approached the stand.
The prosecutor asked:
"Mr. Cross, why did you come forward?"
Daniel looked at Maura.
"Because I failed her grandfather."
The courtroom listened.
"I was ordered to watch the Ellington family."
"By whom?"
Daniel looked toward Eleanor.
Silence.
Then he answered.
"By Eleanor Whitmore."
The courtroom exploded.
The judge demanded order.
But Daniel continued.
"She knew Maura's identity before Adrian met her."
Maura felt cold.
"She knew everything."
The prosecutor stepped closer.
"Why?"
Daniel answered:
"Because Eleanor believed Maura was the only person who could take away her control."
The trial continued for hours.
Documents were presented.
Messages were revealed.
Financial records were shown.
The perfect image of Eleanor Whitmore slowly collapsed.
Finally, the judge delivered the decision.
"Based on the evidence presented..."
Everyone held their breath.
"The court finds sufficient grounds to proceed with criminal charges against Eleanor Whitmore."
The courtroom erupted.
Eleanor remained still.
But her eyes were no longer confident.
For the first time in decades...
she had lost control.
As officers approached, she turned toward Maura.
"I hope you are happy."
Maura looked at her.
"I don't want your downfall."
Eleanor smiled bitterly.
"Then what do you want?"
Maura held Lily closer.
"I want my daughter to grow up knowing that love is not something you use as a weapon."
For a moment...
Eleanor had no answer.
Because that was the one thing she had never understood.
Love could not be controlled.
And now...
the woman she tried to silence had become the voice she could no longer ignore.
But as Eleanor was taken away...
one question remained.
Why had Daniel lied about being dead?
And what secret was he still hiding?
Because even after Eleanor's fall...
May you like
the truth was not complete.
