CHAPTER 5

The Secret Behind The Wedding

The truth had a strange way of arriving.

Never when people were ready.

Never when it was convenient.

It waited.

It hid.

And then, when everyone believed the worst was already over...

it revealed that the nightmare had only just begun.

The file sat on Adrian's laptop.

A simple name.

A terrifying meaning.

Operation: Remove Maura Ellington.

Three words that changed everything.

For years, Adrian had believed his mother was difficult.

Controlling.

Traditional.

Obsessed with reputation.

But this was different.

This was not a mother trying to protect her son.

This was a woman creating a plan to destroy his wife.

Maura sat beside him in the hospital room.

Their newborn daughter slept peacefully between them.

The contrast was painful.

A beautiful beginning surrounded by a terrible truth.

"Open it."

Maura's voice was quiet.

Adrian looked at her.

"Are you sure?"

She nodded.

"I spent my entire pregnancy feeling like something was wrong."

A pause.

"Now I need to know what it was."

Adrian opened the file.

The first document appeared.

A timeline.

Six months before wedding.

Subject identified: Maura Ellington.

Objective: Prevent marriage.

Adrian's breathing stopped.

"She was planning this before we even got married."

Maura stared at the screen.

Her face became pale.

The next page contained photographs.

Photos of Maura.

Her family.

Her business connections.

Her past.

Eleanor had investigated everything.

"She knew."

Adrian whispered.

"She knew who you were."

Maura nodded slowly.

"I think she knew before I told you."

The next document shocked them both.

Reason for concern: Maura Ellington's inheritance.

Adrian frowned.

"What does this mean?"

Maura looked at the screen.

Then suddenly became silent.

"Maura?"

She took a deep breath.

"My grandfather created the Ellington Trust."

Adrian waited.

"It controls several companies."

"How many?"

She hesitated.

"Enough to compete with Whitmore Holdings."

The room became quiet.

Adrian finally understood.

This was never about a wedding.

Never about tradition.

Never about whether Maura was good enough.

It was about power.

Eleanor had not hated Maura because she was different.

She had feared her.

But there was something else.

A final document.

Adrian opened it.

Marriage Agreement Proposal.

His face changed.

"What?"

Maura looked at him.

He continued reading.

The document described a plan.

If Adrian married a woman approved by Eleanor...

Whitmore Holdings would merge with another corporation.

Creating one of the largest private financial groups in the country.

Maura understood.

"She wanted you to marry for business."

Adrian nodded.

"And I ruined her plan."

A bitter smile appeared on Maura's face.

"No."

She looked at him.

"She thinks I ruined it."

A pause.

"But maybe she ruined herself."

The next morning, the Whitmore family gathered.

Not at the hospital.

At the Whitmore estate.

The same mansion where Adrian grew up.

The same place where Eleanor controlled everything.

Except today...

she was no longer in control.

Charles Whitmore sat at the head of the table.

The atmosphere was cold.

"Explain."

His voice was directed at Eleanor.

She looked calm.

Almost bored.

"You already know."

"No."

Charles's voice hardened.

"I know what you planned."

A pause.

"I want to know why."

Eleanor looked at Adrian.

"Because you were making a mistake."

Adrian laughed quietly.

"A mistake?"

"Yes."

Eleanor replied.

"You think love is enough."

She looked at Maura.

"But powerful families do not survive because of love."

Maura remained silent.

"They survive because people make sacrifices."

Adrian stared.

"And Maura was the sacrifice?"

Eleanor did not answer.

That was the answer.

Charles closed his eyes.

For the first time, Adrian saw his father look defeated.

"I defended you for thirty years."

Charles said quietly.

Eleanor looked at him.

"And you will continue to."

The confidence in her voice was terrifying.

Adrian noticed.

"You still think you can control everyone."

Eleanor smiled.

"Because I can."

A phone rang.

One of the lawyers entered.

"Mr. Whitmore."

Everyone turned.

"The board has requested Adrian's resignation as CEO."

Silence.

Adrian frowned.

"What?"

The lawyer placed a folder on the table.

"They believe the scandal has damaged the company."

Eleanor looked satisfied.

Maura noticed.

"You knew this would happen."

Eleanor looked at her.

"I knew everything would happen."

The room froze.

Then Eleanor revealed the secret she had been protecting.

"The wedding was never only about marriage."

Everyone listened.

"It was about control."

She looked at Adrian.

"You were supposed to become the head of the merged company."

A pause.

"With a wife who could be controlled."

Maura's eyes hardened.

"And when I wasn't?"

Eleanor smiled.

"I removed the problem."

The cruelty of those words filled the room.

Adrian stood.

"You're talking about my wife."

"No."

Eleanor corrected.

"I am talking about an obstacle."

That was the moment something inside Adrian changed.

Not because his mother hurt Maura.

She had already done that.

Because he finally saw the truth.

His mother had never wanted him to be happy.

She wanted him to be useful.

That night, Adrian and Maura returned to the hospital.

Neither spoke for a long time.

Finally, Adrian said:

"I am sorry."

Maura looked at him.

"For what?"

"For bringing you into this."

She shook her head.

"You didn't create this."

"No."

He looked at their daughter.

"But I allowed it."

That sentence mattered.

Because for the first time...

Adrian stopped defending himself.

He accepted responsibility.

Then Maura's phone received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

You think Eleanor Whitmore is your enemy? Ask her what happened the night your father died.

Maura froze.

Adrian noticed.

"What is it?"

She slowly turned the phone toward him.

Both of them stared.

Because there was one name mentioned in the message.

A name that connected their families in a way nobody expected.

William Ellington.

Maura's grandfather.

And beneath it...

another sentence.

Your marriage was arranged long before you met.

The room went silent.

The wedding that was supposed to unite two families...

had never been a love story.

It had been a plan.

May you like

And someone had spent years making sure Maura never discovered the truth.
