CHAPTER 3

The Mother-In-Law's Perfect Lie

The truth was always fragile.

A single piece of evidence could destroy a carefully built illusion.

A single witness could expose a lifetime of deception.

But lies...

Lies could survive for years.

Especially when they came from someone everyone trusted.

By sunrise, the story had already begun spreading.

Not the truth.

Not yet.

The truth was still trapped inside hospital walls.

But the rumor had escaped.

Whitmore wedding ends in emergency.

New bride rushed to hospital during ceremony.

Family conflict behind billionaire heir's marriage?

The headlines appeared before Maura even opened her eyes.

Inside the private hospital room, Adrian sat beside his wife.

He had not slept.

Not for a minute.

His daughter slept peacefully in the small crib beside the bed.

A tiny person who had almost never entered this world.

Because of one decision.

One cruel decision.

Adrian looked at Maura.

Her face was pale.

Exhausted.

But alive.

"I should have noticed."

His voice was barely a whisper.

Maura opened her eyes slowly.

"You can't change what happened."

He looked at her.

"I should have protected you."

A long silence followed.

Because that was the truth neither of them wanted to say.

Adrian had spent his life protecting businesses.

Contracts.

Investments.

Family reputation.

But the one person who needed him most...

he failed to protect.

The door opened.

A nurse entered.

"Mrs. Whitmore, there are visitors asking to see you."

Maura immediately tensed.

"Who?"

The nurse hesitated.

"Your mother-in-law."

The room became cold.

Adrian stood immediately.

"No."

The nurse looked surprised.

"Sir?"

"She doesn't see my wife."

Maura looked at him.

For the first time since the incident...

she saw something different in his eyes.

Not confusion.

Not hesitation.

Protection.

But before anyone could respond...

Eleanor's voice came from the hallway.

"Adrian."

She entered without waiting.

Like she owned the room.

She wore a simple black dress.

Her expression was perfect.

Concerned.

Heartbroken.

A grieving mother.

Exactly the image she wanted everyone to see.

"My poor daughter-in-law."

Eleanor approached the bed.

"I heard what happened."

Maura stared at her.

"You heard?"

Eleanor placed a hand over her chest.

"I was so worried."

The words were beautiful.

Almost convincing.

Almost.

Adrian stepped between them.

"Leave."

Eleanor looked wounded.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

Her eyes filled with tears instantly.

A performance.

A perfect performance.

"Adrian, after everything I have done for this family..."

Maura watched silently.

And something became clear.

Eleanor was not afraid.

She was acting.

"After everything you have done?"

Adrian's voice hardened.

"My wife almost died."

Eleanor shook her head.

"Because she panicked."

Silence.

Maura looked at her.

"What?"

Eleanor turned.

"Maura, dear, I understand you are emotional."

The same word.

Emotional.

The word people used when they wanted to make women seem unreliable.

"But you cannot blame me for your fear."

Adrian's expression changed.

"What are you saying?"

Eleanor sighed.

"I think we all know what happened."

"No."

Adrian stepped forward.

"You don't get to rewrite this."

But Eleanor continued.

"Maura was overwhelmed."

Her voice became softer.

"She was nervous about joining this family."

Maura felt something inside her break.

"You locked me in a bathroom."

The room became silent.

Eleanor looked shocked.

"What?"

"You heard me."

Maura's voice was weak.

"But clear."

Eleanor immediately looked at Adrian.

"Your wife is accusing me?"

Not denying.

Not explaining.

Immediately making herself the victim.

Adrian noticed.

For years, he had seen his mother use this technique.

But he never realized it.

Someone accused her.

She became hurt.

Someone questioned her.

She became the victim.

Someone challenged her.

She became the wounded person.

And everyone rushed to comfort her.

Except now...

he was watching.

"Mother."

His voice was quiet.

"Did you enter the bathroom?"

Eleanor froze.

Only for a second.

But Adrian saw it.

"I went to check on her."

"Did you take her phone?"

Another pause.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

A perfect lie.

Maura looked away.

Because that hurt.

Not only because Eleanor lied.

But because she lied so easily.

The door suddenly opened.

A hospital administrator entered.

"Mr. Whitmore?"

Adrian turned.

"Yes?"

"We received a request regarding the wedding venue security footage."

Everyone became still.

Eleanor's face changed.

Just slightly.

"What footage?"

Adrian asked.

"The security recordings from the bridal suite hallway."

Maura looked at Eleanor.

And for the first time...

fear appeared on Eleanor's face.

Very small.

Very brief.

But real.

"Who requested it?"

Adrian asked.

The administrator looked at him.

"Your wife."

Everyone looked at Maura.

She had already taken action.

"I knew nobody would believe me."

Her voice was calm.

"So I asked the hotel to preserve the footage."

Eleanor stared.

"You planned this?"

Maura looked at her.

"No."

A pause.

"I protected myself."

The administrator continued.

"The footage has been secured. However, because it involves a private family matter, only authorized parties can review it."

Adrian immediately answered.

"I am her husband."

Maura looked at him.

Then nodded.

The administrator left.

Eleanor remained silent.

And for the first time...

her perfect mask began to crack.

That evening, the footage was brought to the hospital.

The family gathered in a private room.

Adrian.

Maura.

Charles Whitmore.

And Eleanor.

The screen turned on.

At first...

nothing happened.

The camera showed the hallway.

Guests walking.

Staff moving.

The wedding continuing.

Then Eleanor appeared.

Walking toward the bridal bathroom.

Everyone watched.

She entered.

Five minutes later...

she came out.

Without Maura.

Adrian's face changed.

Then the camera zoomed slightly.

Eleanor reached into her bag.

And took out something.

Maura's phone.

The room became silent.

Charles Whitmore looked at his wife.

Not with anger.

With disbelief.

Eleanor whispered:

"That doesn't prove anything."

But everyone knew.

It did.

Because the truth was no longer hidden.

The woman who spent decades controlling every story...

had finally lost control of this one.

But Eleanor was not finished.

She had one final weapon.

A secret she had kept from Adrian his entire life.

A secret that could destroy not only Maura's marriage...

May you like

but the entire Whitmore family.
